Selfish people on bus

70smusic · 12/04/2021 18:54

I don’t own a car and today needed to take the bus for an essential journey. I was really shocked to see that of the 8 or so people on the bus, 5 weren’t wearing masks properly. 3 people had them covering the mouth only with their noses exposed, 1 person pulled theirs down to chat on the phone and another had theirs around their neck. I’m assuming all these people are able to wear masks and weren’t exempt as they did have them on - they just weren’t wearing them properly.

I just don’t understand what goes through these people’s minds - do they not care about putting others at risk? It just seems so selfish and ignorant. I got off the bus feeling really panicky that they could have put me (and therefore my family) at risk. I’m not worried about myself but do worry about giving the virus to others (including my DC). I despair Sad

But this is what I don’t get. Like I can understand wanting pubs, shops etc to reopen but I don’t understand what hardship most people suffer by wearing a mask. Especially if you genuinely can’t wear a mask then you don’t have to.

I’m not sure how comfortable I personally feel with the idea that I shouldn’t even have to take even minor steps to protect others.

Rosehip10 · 12/04/2021 19:45

@Florelei "the vulnerable" should have had their 1st and potentially second vaccine now, which will do a lot more to protect them than the filthy mask I see half on/off on buses.

orangegina · 12/04/2021 19:46

13 people died of covid yesterday. One. Three. In the whole country

The odds of getting run over by a bus is probably higher than that

Time for life to resume

3JsMa · 12/04/2021 19:46

Or maybe they are exempt but still trying to cope with a mask but find it difficult?Maybe phone call was urgent?
As long as you covering yourself, use anti bac gel and wash your hands properly upon your return home it should be fine, unless you insist to sit/stand very close to them.

OliveTree75 · 12/04/2021 19:46
@70smusic why do you need to tell us your journey was "essential" - there is no "stay at home, essential travel only" now (since 29 march....)
My thoughts exactly

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 19:47

@Florelei

So are people no longer bothered about taking steps to protect others around us who might be vulnerable?

It’s not like you’re being asked to donate a limb. Plus, if you genuinely can’t wear a mask then you don’t have to.

Should the vulnerable just stay home forever? Or is it unrealistic to expect people to take small steps to protect each other?

This is a serious question. Do people feel like they shouldn’t have to wear a mask to protect others?

Well, you asked but no, I don't think I should have to wear a piece of cloth over my face anymore. I've been vaccinated twice. If that doesn't work, why are we doing it? You can apply 'protect others so do this or don't do this' to just about anything. I'm done with this.
Florelei · 12/04/2021 19:47

Yeah, @Rosehip10 I’m pleased a lot of people will have the protection of the vaccine.

But what is the problem with wearing a face covering for a temporary period when you know that could protect someone else? I’m not being funny I’m just trying to understand what the argument is. 🙂

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 19:48

I don't have one. Not everything is an argument to everyone. I don't want to use them anymore. I hate them. I do but when I see others taking them off, etc. I join them. Fuck it.
Chunkymenrock · 12/04/2021 19:50

I agree OP. People are selfish twats and that's why I stay away from them as much as I can. It's still essential that we wear masks to help reduce the possibility of transmission.

HairyPits · 12/04/2021 19:52

It’s interesting that people are so obsessed about ‘the vulnerable’ all of a sudden.

Prior to Covid, there have always been vulnerable people. Those who are immune-suppressed due to illness or treatment, babies in the womb vulnerable to disease the mother may come in contact with, the anaphylactic.........society would never go out of their way to harm these people, but we weren’t all wearing masks to protect them, nuts aren’t banned in public spaces.........

Living has inherent danger for many.....

If you are that worried, you need to avoid these trigger situations, not rage about everyone else!

On a side note, did you ask any of them to replace their masks correctly, or just moan on here?

Florelei · 12/04/2021 19:52

Thanks for taking the time to reply @osbertthesyrianhamster.

70smusic · 12/04/2021 19:53

@Rosehip10 Apologies, my post was unclear. I didn’t mean “essential” in that sense. What I meant was, I needed to make this journey and so had to take the bus. If it wasn’t essential to have made the journey I wouldn’t have taken the bus, but it was unavoidable unfortunately. I was using “essential” in the pre-Covid sense of the word!

MN in recent weeks has become a vehicle for people wanting to mock others who believe that the rules re face masks should still be followed. If you're not exempt, in my opinion you should still be wearing them, and wearing them correctly, in the environments where it's mandatory.

BonnieDundee · 12/04/2021 19:56

I can wear one but hate doing so. I've been puting others first for the past year and I'm sick of it. I still have to wear them 5 full days a week at work.

NailsNeedDoing · 12/04/2021 19:58

Lots of people are testing now, and you can’t pass on Covid if you don’t have it.

So true. It's not the most supportive place most of the time but has recently reached an unprecedented level of selfish cuntery.
MrsHastingslikethebattle · 12/04/2021 20:04

*It’s interesting that people are so obsessed about ‘the vulnerable’ all of a sudden.

Didn't you know, there was no risk before Covid?Hmm Covid is the worse thing out there. We must have zero cases to live a normal life.
Next alcohol, cigarettes and chocolate will be banned to save millions through preventable disease...oh no wait, that would be too unfair to stop the choice of many to save a small minority wouldn't it?

Great point, wasting your breath. People have been scared into submission for a year now. No rational thinking is to be had.

70smusic · 12/04/2021 20:04

You dont like the risk, stay the fuck at home or get a taxi.

What an unpleasant post. I would have got a taxi if I had the money, but it would have cost a fortune compared to the bus.

OP posts:
NotFrozen · 12/04/2021 20:05

I agree with @ilovesooty

Who are all these unpleasant anti-mask people? The OP is absolutely right to be uncomfortable about so many people flouting the rules, and she was has been very polite about it too. I think some people must join these threads just to be provocative

ilovesooty · 12/04/2021 20:05

It's not reasonable to tell people to "stay the fuck at home or get a taxi". The regulations are still in place, and until they aren't I think people who are able to wear a mask in public areas should do so - properly.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 20:07

Like I said, I wear them if I have to (I usually drive everywhere, though), but if I see others being lax I join right in.

NotFrozen · 12/04/2021 20:08

@MrsHastingslikethebattle

Completely excessive and unnecessary. Anger issues maybe?

Wellbythebloodyhell · 12/04/2021 20:10

@70smusic

I don’t want to get a bike - it wouldn’t suit my needs for various reasons. What I do want is for people not to be so selfish and deliberately put me and others (and by extension our families and other people we come into contact with) at risk on public transport.
Get a taxi next time then you don't need to converse with the bus wankers
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 12/04/2021 20:15

I’m not surprised OP, it’s very saddening to see how many aren’t complying anymore. Unfair to other passengers and the driver.
