Selfish people on bus

70smusic · 12/04/2021 18:54

I don’t own a car and today needed to take the bus for an essential journey. I was really shocked to see that of the 8 or so people on the bus, 5 weren’t wearing masks properly. 3 people had them covering the mouth only with their noses exposed, 1 person pulled theirs down to chat on the phone and another had theirs around their neck. I’m assuming all these people are able to wear masks and weren’t exempt as they did have them on - they just weren’t wearing them properly.

I just don’t understand what goes through these people’s minds - do they not care about putting others at risk? It just seems so selfish and ignorant. I got off the bus feeling really panicky that they could have put me (and therefore my family) at risk. I’m not worried about myself but do worry about giving the virus to others (including my DC). I despair Sad

I really get that people are fed up with it but wearing a mask on a bus seems like a very easy thing to do to try and limit the spread. It’s a no brainier. Better for us all of rates stay lower - less chance of another lockdown, less chance of us getting ill, less chance of losing loved ones, more chance of NHS care we need. No one benefits from higher rates of COVID. So surely mask wearing, if you can, is a small behaviour change to keep up with.

YANBU OP. I think it’s really depressing hearing that.

Also, to PP who said about the younger less at risk sacrificing to protect those more at risk, in Brazil, where it’s been left to run rampant, half of ICU cases are under 40 and the health system is collapsing.

Hands, face, space and fresh air are very very small things we can all easily do to limit the impact of the virus until such a time that enough have been vaccinated.

Ffs.

  • no brainier
  • if rates stay low. Fat fingers!!

No brainer!! Bloody autocorrect

@noblegiraffe

So how DO you determine which scientists are credible regarding this issue of the pandemic, specifically?

Well the antivaxxing covid-deniers definitely are off the credible list. That includes that HART founder.

There's a whole bunch of anti-lockdown groups who manage to destroy their credibility for themselves in the nonsense they post. Generally I have no time for anyone who is not only anti-lockdown, but also anti vaccine, anti mask, anti social distancing, anti border control, anti anything that isn't a complete removal of all covid restrictions. It implies a political agenda rather than a scientific one.

That's the problem though, isn't it?

I'm anti lockdown, anti mask but very pro vaccine, pro social distancing, pro border control.

Some people like to tie everyone with the same brush and its not that simple.

I have given many many arguments about lockdowns but yet I'm treated like 'a big reset' and 'chip in our DNA' conspiracy theorist.

Why anti-mask?

Theres no peer reviewed studies that show they reduce any significant transmission.

Theres been scientists etc who have supported this but they get silenced.

So let me make a few suggestions. First, concentrate on what YOU are doing not everyone else. Second, learn to drive or buy a car if you can’t cope with public transport and last but not least, get a life. I mean you clearly have nothing better to do than sit and judge other people.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/04/2021 20:09

People concentrating on what they are doing and not thinking of others is part of how we got into this mess in the first place. You can’t just think of yourself when dealing with an aerosol spread virus. Reality doesn’t work like that. Decisions you make can affect the people around you.

Buses are a shit show, OP. My suggestion would be get an N95 mask or a layered fabric mask you can fit a filter between the layers of. Then sit by an open window.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 15/04/2021 20:16

There's also the issue of bus and train services that were reduced during lockdown not being increased to pre Covid levels despite now being really busy again. It makes a complete joke of social distancing and the fact that people have to abide by all sorts of rules everywhere else but public transport and all bets are off.

This.

The bus I was on the other day got so full it was standing room only, something I haven't seen since February 2020 (near me, anyway). Absolutely no chance of sitting alone. I'm exempt and there was no way at all I could SD for the sake of others. I also had to squeeze past people to get off at my stop. Utterly ridiculous.

Mrs Hastings Here's a good, recent study for you:

Stuffin · 16/04/2021 08:28

I think the issue with masks depends on whether you think they work.

The people shouting selfish in my point of view are those that think wearing masks mean that they won't ever get covid. It's the 'covid secure' mentality that if x has mandated circles on the floor, masks and all the other stuff that they are 'safe' from any harm.

For me personally I think it is just another thing that the government bought in to make everyone 'feel safe' but I don't think they are as important as a lot of people say. I do wear one but only because I can't be bothered with a fine but if I had a choice I wouldn't wear one and don't care if everyone around me doesn't have one on either.

@MrsHastingslikethebattle

There is robust evidence to suggest masks are effective at reducing transmission.

e.g., www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2014564118

Which scientists arguing against this have been silenced? There are so many posts with people claiming this, but I have never been able to get a name out of any of them.

As a scientist, if you want to publish an article you can. The limiting factor tends to be shite science with poor methodology isn't accepted into decent publications. But there's always a predatory journal that will accept shoddy work, and failing that you can upload anything to a pre-print server so the public can read it before peer review.

oldegg123 · 16/04/2021 11:25

See pokemon paper I have mentiond on a previous thread. It's surprisingly easy to publish and spread scientific misinformation.
