Selfish people on bus

239 replies

70smusic · 12/04/2021 18:54

I don’t own a car and today needed to take the bus for an essential journey. I was really shocked to see that of the 8 or so people on the bus, 5 weren’t wearing masks properly. 3 people had them covering the mouth only with their noses exposed, 1 person pulled theirs down to chat on the phone and another had theirs around their neck. I’m assuming all these people are able to wear masks and weren’t exempt as they did have them on - they just weren’t wearing them properly.

I just don’t understand what goes through these people’s minds - do they not care about putting others at risk? It just seems so selfish and ignorant. I got off the bus feeling really panicky that they could have put me (and therefore my family) at risk. I’m not worried about myself but do worry about giving the virus to others (including my DC). I despair Sad

Disheartening isn’t it? I just don’t understand how people can be so selfish and not care that they could be spreading the disease to others and potentially making them very ill. It’s depressing.

Selfish? Those people who have lost jobs, businesses, income, homes, not seen their family for months and had their mental health impacted? What selfish bastards Hmm

I for one, am glad that the days of twitching curtains and the coronastasi are coming to an end

Stellaris22 · 13/04/2021 07:47

I'm not surprised by some of the responses here sadly.

Buses and other public transport are confined spaces and need to be treated like a potential risk.

We need to get back to normality, which involves being able to safely use public transport. But this involves everyone playing their part and taking the appropriate measures to be safe.

The fact that people are still complaining about having to wear masks and unable to use them correctly is very sad.

Boomchicka · 13/04/2021 07:47

Being called selfish, granny killer, murderer etc. really loses it's sting after a full year. I've been called selfish for buying non essential food in the early days, for using childcare before the bubbles to keep my job, for going abroad for a week in summer, for hugging my mother, and on and on. It's boring and has no effect on my choices whatsoever.

HedgleyTheHedgehog · 13/04/2021 07:52

For me this pandemic has further exposed how selfish many people are. I'm not a ppl person anyway but now I like ppl even less. DP says that my ideal life would be living in a cabin in the woods. I don't deny that

Stellaris22 · 13/04/2021 08:01

I got the bus for the first time in nearly two years yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Everyone wearing masks correctly. I had no issue with people sitting together as they could have been household bubbles.

Being able to use public transport safely is an essential need for a lot of people. We own a car but I still prefer the bus as it's convenient and more environmentally friendly.

Everyone using these services needs to take responsibility and be safe. It's really not hard and the responses here are tiresome and yes, selfish.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/04/2021 08:02

Hancock and Whitty have done a fabulous job here haven't they 👏👏 telling people to act as if you have the virus which in turn leads people to thinking that everyone around them is disgusting and disease riddled. People are now scared of their fellow man its quite sad we live like this now, the psychological effects from this will be quite damaging for a long time.

TheClaws · 13/04/2021 08:04

Next alcohol, cigarettes and chocolate will be banned to save millions through preventable disease...oh no wait, that would be too unfair to stop the choice of many to save a small minority wouldn't it?

Hyperbole, MrsHastings, clearly. Cigarettes, alcohol and chocolate are a lifestyle choice. Additionally, they aren't contagious, so your sipping of of a beer won't affect a number of others exponentially.

The viciousness of this thread about a small public health measure - one that is known, irrevocably, to be protective from a tiny pathogen - is unwarranted. They're uncomfortable and hot and a raft and other things, but they could also save you.

A certain group of posters are always screaming about a 'narrative', but you have a particular narrative of your own, don't you think?

RedcurrantPuff · 13/04/2021 08:05

@70smusic

I can't believe we're this far along and we're still getting mask froth threads.

@RedcurrantPuff @TheVampiresWife And I can’t believe how many selfish people are perfectly happy to put their fellow passengers and bus drivers at increased risk. Are you someone who gets on public transport and doesn’t wear a mask? If so (and assuming you’re not exempt) then shame on you.

I wouldn’t br seen dead on public transport pandemic or not and despite thinking masks are pointless I still abide by the rules so no shame on me.
RedcurrantPuff · 13/04/2021 08:10

Hardly anyone had Covid now - the chances of one of these 5 people having it given current figures is tiny. People need to get a sense of perspective and stop seeing other petiole as vectors of disease. It’s crazy and not good for mental health

SpareBib · 13/04/2021 08:12

YANBU OP. What's wrong with all of you on this thread? So selfish and uninformed. Masks do reduce transmission, research has shown this again and again. OP, there's also evidence that double-masking will protect the wearer most, so maybe do that next time you are on a bus with selfish mask-refusers?

seven201 · 13/04/2021 08:12

@ilovesooty

MN in recent weeks has become a vehicle for people wanting to mock others who believe that the rules re face masks should still be followed. If you're not exempt, in my opinion you should still be wearing them, and wearing them correctly, in the environments where it's mandatory.
I agree with this.

I don't think i know a person in real life who is fed up of mask wearing. I'd be pissed off too if I got on public transport and people weren't wearing their masks properly.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/04/2021 08:17

Can the mask fans explain why we had a second wave, when we had to wear them, much larger than the first when we didn’t?

People really are placing too much faith in the disease preventing properties of a scrunched up piece of paper or cloth that’s probably been in someone’s pocket for a month

Ah yes, the “Kent variant”. Might have guessed. Even though cases were still rising well before that was trotted out.

CoffeeWithCheese · 13/04/2021 08:32

@LucilleTheVampireBat

Bastards. I bet they don't even put cheese in their coffee and have literal blood on their hands. #STFAH
You rang?
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/04/2021 08:33

Selfish? Those people who have lost jobs, businesses, income, homes, not seen their family for months and had their mental health impacted?

Not to mention health and lies.

And still people complain or refuse to comply with basic measures like masks or distancing even after seeing the devastation this virus has caused all over the world.

moochingtothepub · 13/04/2021 08:43

It's been like that throughout, people on the top deck don't bother wearing them it seems here. Bus driver visibly shrugged and audibly sighed last time I took a bus as 3 teens got on claiming exemption "got asthma right" one said. We stay downstairs with the old folk

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 13/04/2021 08:47

You dont like the risk, stay the fuck at home or get a taxi.

People are so selfish. I have to get the bus sometimes. It’s still the law to wear them. We don’t have to stay at home but you do have to wear a face covering.

It travels by droplets so something that restricts droplets coming out of people’s nose and mouth is obviously going to help.

worldchampz · 13/04/2021 08:49

@LucilleTheVampireBat
😂

OP, here's a thought, why not just say "please put your mask on" if you're bothered? Then YOU'D be taking steps to protect the vulnerable. Bravo etc.

My view? Wearing a mask isn't that hard, I don't really mind doing it and can't get worked up about it. What bothers me more is how willingly we've sacrificed he interests of children, people who live alone, small business owners & anybody with a health condition that isn't Covid.

Brindisi32 · 13/04/2021 09:41

People really are placing too much faith in the disease preventing properties of a scrunched up piece of paper or cloth that’s probably been in someone’s pocket for a month

A number of reasons were put forward for why we had a huge second wave: the autumn/winter season enables indoor transmission; eat out to help out; schools, colleges, universities returning without full mitigation measures in place; the govt ignoring the warnings by SAGE in the autumn re school transmission; Christmas Day indoor celebrations; sending schools back for one day in January; all of these helped both the existing virus and the new, more potent Kent variant to circulate.

The experts predict there will be other variants which could cause further lockdowns but if masks and public social distancing remain in place for the next year or so we will be in a better place to reduce the impact.

Wearing a mask incorrectly is not going to bring those jobs back.

Easy, it was spreading in the many settings where masks weren't being worn. Classrooms, halls of residence, house parties etc.
bringbacksideburns · 13/04/2021 09:58

I'm going to give those of you saying you wouldn't be seen dead on public transport the benefit of the doubt and a nice biscuit. Maybe we should just round everyone up who can't drive for whatever reasons or can't afford a car and shoot them all?

End of problem Smile

RedcurrantPuff · 13/04/2021 10:03

Actually it’s just buses I avoid. Trains are OK. Not that I have been on one for about 2 years
