Parents refused the vaccine and now have covid

Even worse, they looked after my dd today as we are moving house and this has now meant we can’t see DPs parents tomorrow, on his birthday, for the first time in 6 months.
I am devastated. Worried for them (and me as I am pregnant). But most of all bloody angry and I don’t know if iabu to feel this way. But I can’t help being annoyed they didn’t have the vaccine. They have turned it down twice both from work and the GP.
I don’t even know what to say to PILs at the moment as I am embarrassed at the way my parents have handled the whole pandemic..and it has now cost PILs seeing their grandchild Sad
Not a question really, just wanted to vent. Maybe it’s my fault for letting them look after her? But didn’t feel I could blackmail them to make them have the vaccine. It’s so shit.
Any ideas to help me salvage DPs birthday much appreciated. I don’t even have a cake as MIL was bringing that.

Context is important though. Most healthcare staff were given Pfizer, so a lot of younger people who have been offered AZ have had it because they are eligible due to underlying conditions. None under 50 will have had it due to age yet, and although I'm obviously not saying it doesn't matter as they potentially had existing conditions, I think it could explain the disparity. It makes sense to change the advice whilst they find out more to lower the risk, and obviously the balance of covid risk is important to consider too.

FlattestWhite · 08/04/2021 10:12

Indeed, following the experts is something I think we certainly agree on

Twoforthree · 08/04/2021 10:19

I'd be so angry too, but mixed in with complete worry for them, and obviously yourselves.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 08/04/2021 10:33

none under 50 have had it due to age

Clearly some have had it for the blot clots to have been reported in the younger ones, I'm sure the youngest person who reported a clot was 18Confused

I'm in my 30s I had AZ, most people I know under 50 who's had the jab have had the AZ apart from some front line nurses who had the Pfizer in the early vaccination stages

pam290358 · 08/04/2021 11:39

Tonight people in their 20s might be questioning their confidence in the govt advice on vaccines.

Why ? The AZ vaccine is the problem, so why not have one of the alternatives ?

pam290358 · 08/04/2021 11:48

Why do some people seem so determined not to accept that vaccination is necessary to get us out of this mess ? You only have to look at the way the figures have improved since the vaccine roll out, to know that it works, so why the fuss - and why the conspiracy theories - corrupt governments, terrible pharmaceutical companies, etc., etc., ? OK, so some people have had nasty reactions - better than getting the virus itself. Some people have had blood clots, and yes, some of those have died, but the risk is minuscule compared with the risks associated with Covid, even for young people. People would rather believe the rubbish they read online than the actual scientific facts and either don’t bother to check their facts before they speak, or simply don’t care that spreading this stuff is harmful. There’s always been opposition to vaccines but ask yourselves a question. If Covid produced the same symptoms as, say, Smallpox or Polio, would you still be in opposition and clinging to your beliefs rather than be vaccinated ?

IloveJKRowling · 08/04/2021 11:59

Whilst I'd be frustrated if my parents didn't have the vaccine, I wouldn't use them for childcare if that was the situation. (I can't use my parents for childcare anyway but in a hypothetical situation where I could).

I think the OP might be a bit fed up with herself here - because she went ahead and used them for childcare anyway. If she'd have said no to that maybe they'd have realised how strongly she felt and reconsidered or it would have at least prompted a conversation.

Obviously we don't know their point of view here either. Maybe they've had reactions to vaccines in the past. They must have some reasons for not having it. Hope they have mild cases OP.

I've had the vaccine, I believe in vaccines, I'm old enough to have been in danger of polio before it was rolled out, I am old enough to remember smallpox outbreaks in my city. I still think everyone has a right to make their own decision.
Tryingtryingandtrying · 08/04/2021 21:36

Pam290358 presumably you are one who is at risk from Covid, hence you think it is worth a handful of people dying from blood clots folllowing the vaccine (for an illness that they may have already have had and not known or be at zero risk from) in order to protect you?

Twoforthree · 11/04/2021 20:10

How are they all? And you?

Ofallthedays · 14/04/2021 19:35

Thank you for asking @Twoforthree
I am sorry it has taken so long to get back to you all.
I am on day 8 after my covid symptoms (and subsequent positive test) began. Feeling worse today and very worried.
Looking back at my original posts I was reacting to the fear of my family having it and I feel awful now for blaming them. They have been unwell but starting to feel better now.
But this is awful and I urge people to practice caution particularly now lockdown is lifting. Protect your family and do not rely on lateral flow tests!

One thing I would say - is that if you had no other childcare options other than your parents - what was your backup plan ? I think many have a backup childcare plan - even if it is not convenient - so e.g. if can't go to nursery because temperature etc.

Ofallthedays · 14/04/2021 19:47

@BasiliskStare sorry I don’t understand what you mean. If she couldn’t go to nursery because of temperature I wouldn’t have been sending her anywhere

OP posts:
Ofallthedays · 14/04/2021 19:56

My parents were my back up to nursery been closed. For example they have had dd when I have gone for scans etc as she has not been able to come with us.
Anyway, I am not coming back to be slated when I already feel horrendous. Just wanted to update people.
Please consider your vaccine. My DP has had both doses and has not been affected and it shows the difference it makes. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody

We don’t have any other childcare options

Which is it OP?

If you want vaccinated people to look after your child, you need to advertise for alternative childcare. You can’t insist, nor should you insist, that your parents take the vaccination.

Ofallthedays · 14/04/2021 21:13

I have never insisted
Thank you for your input

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Scottishskifun · 14/04/2021 21:32

@Ofallthedays sorry you have been unwell I know the feeling I'm on week 3 of covid after a moderate case.

Are you monitoring yourself with an oximeter?
Would say try to keep upright even in bed and sleeping if your breathless. Please also do not hesitate to contact 111 I did several times and was put into steroid treatment which really did help!

Rest up as much as possible if your DH is OK then let him do childcare. It's taken me nearly 3 weeks to get out of bed (I'm 34 BTW mild asthma my only at risk).
Keep up with plenty of fluids and eating even though a lot of the time you might be forcing it.

It took me 12 /13 days to not have a fever. Keep ontop of pain meds alternating paracetamol and Ibruprofen with a 2 hour cross over so you don't have to wait.

Hope you feel better soon it really is a very random illness which at times can be quite scary.

Unsure33 · 15/04/2021 07:44

@ofallthedays. Hope you feel better soon. I agree the fear can bring on all sorts of emotions .

YukoandHiro · 15/04/2021 09:32

How are you feeling today @Ofallthedays? Hope you start to turn a corner soon.
Also really glad to hear the vaccine has protected your DH so he can look after you and your family.

Ofallthedays · 15/04/2021 15:18

Thank you for your kind messages
I feel better today after a scary evening yesterday.
Thank you for your tips @Scottishskifun. I’m glad you’re feeling better. Unfortunately I am limited in what I can take as I am pregnant.

Scottishskifun · 15/04/2021 15:24

Glad you are feeling a bit better today Smile

It can be a bit of a roller-coaster illness if you have a moderate case just take it as easy as possible and if in doubt call 111 for assistance/advice Flowers
I found some breathing exercises also helped they can be found on Google

Hope you continue to improve

Twoforthree · 15/04/2021 22:21

Oh dear, bless you. It's really scary isn't it. Glad you are feeling a bit better. You'll be up and down for a while but hopefully you are over the worst.
🌷💐

ssd · 19/04/2021 11:02
