@AcornAutumn yeh lol at manly patrons - typo not a requirement of a hospitality customer Grin

toocold54 · 05/04/2021 19:25

What do you mean when you say social distancing? What is yout understanding of what it is?

My understanding of socially distancing is what I do with work and in shops - not unnecessary touching people like shaking hands and sharing food, not standing too close to people, having lines to stand behind when queuing for the tills, having glass shields to separate the till staff - things like that.

PilatesPeach · 05/04/2021 19:27

Social distancing is not just about shops it is about only having 50% of people allowed in a pub or a restaurant or a gym or a pool or a cinema or a theatre. It affects hospitality and leisure so much more than shops!

squiglet111 · 05/04/2021 19:28

I pissed off they might plan to go ahead with the vaccine passport when under 50s haven't been offered the vaccine yet. If this happens soon does that mean that we won't be allowed to go to places?!

toocold54 · 05/04/2021 19:31

It is not just about masks, social distancing in hospitality & leisure venues massively affects how much money businesses can make and indeed if they can even break even.

I understand this but I am sick of paying a lot of money to go somewhere eg a theme park and then having to queue for hours to get on a ride.
The amount of places I have been to that have been way too overcrowded is ridiculous- you can’t see anything, there’s nowhere to sit, you can’t do half of the activities and it’s often not so they can break even but just out of pure greed.

PilatesPeach · 05/04/2021 19:38

Some of us work in those industries and have had our pay cut, that is for the few months they have been open in the last year - I teach fitness classes - I have worked for 4 months out of the last year and by time classes restart inside on 17th May, it will be 4 months out of 14. No help from govt due to being SE too recently so for me, social distancing means less people which means gyms and clubs make less money and cut costs ie pay and class rates or cut classes running. Nothing to do with greed in my sector. Nothing to do with people queueing. To do with some of us continuing to live hand to mouth if SD continues much longer because despite being well trained we have been unlucky.

I do completely feel for people who are SE or have somehow missed out on pay due to the lockdown and I will fully support the vaccination passports for places like these.

I thought you might say that. That's only a small part of social distancing, there is so much more to it than that I think most people who know what it actually involves really wouldn't be happy for it to continue indefinitely. As PilatesPeach says it means limits on how many people can be in many hospitality and leisure venues. It leads to some venues being economically inviable and having to close resulting in job losses. It leads to some sectors of the economy not being able to open up at all.

It means no "normal" weddings (so wedding related businesses going out of business) , limited numbers attending funerals, no going to restaurants with non household members because you can't distance round a dinner table, no hugging non household members, having to limit how many people can visit your home at one time as you have to allow enough space to distance, no big family Christmases or birthday parties or any sort of gatherings. It has a massive economic and social impact. It isn't just about standing in a sticker and screens in shops.

whymewhyme · 05/04/2021 20:00

None of this is normal....if you had been told 12months ago we would all be wearing masks, SD latteral flow tests twice a week, vaccinating every adult and soon to be children in the uk and making it manditory for care workers as well as introducing vaccine passorts to go the pub you would say that it would never happen! Not in england, not here!

we are living it, the goal posts gets moved each time and its scary as fuck. This is not normal but they are going to carry this on untill it becomes normal and we accept it.

And no, in not anti vaxx or anti covid, i am anti fascism!

Exactly people don’t seem to understand that part.

Wearing a seatbelt in a car was never normal but it was introduced as it helped saved lives even though they are uncomfortable etc. I’m sure there were just as many people fighting for their rights to ban seatbelts as they are masks etc.

I would just like as many things to re-open as possible. If that means wearing masks, sanitising my hands on entry and exit and keeping my distance from people more than normal so be it. At least things can start going back to a more normal than what we are living in now.

bluebellscorner · 05/04/2021 21:18

@Dolciedolly that playground incident you are describing is tremendously sad. I’ve seen versions of this a few times this past year. It is unacceptable!

We had a security guard break up my daughter’s friend’s 9th birthday party - June last year, socially distanced event in a private garden square with six girls, the organiser even put a rope up to divide them into two groups (can’t recall what the rules were then but I remember they made sure it was compliant). A neighbour had called to complain and there was no arguing with them.

bluebellscorner · 05/04/2021 21:22

Oh and we had two police officers tell us to ‘have fun risking your children’s lives today’ last summer when we had driven to the sea side after the restrictions lifted. We had approached them to ask a question about parking in the area and they responded by telling us that we were irresponsible parents for being there in the first place and also the comment about risking our children’s lives - they said this in front of them.

Oblomov21 · 05/04/2021 21:29

Op has pissed me off. Majorly. I'm not a government fan but the fact is there been no U-turns they gave a very detailed report of what was going to be done what dates and there have been no U-turns. what you're talking is fucking bullshit, so go and educate yourself properly.

what they said they were going to do, what they are going to do. which is exactly what they said they were going to do. Stop talking bullshit and stop spreading anxiety amongst others. get help for yourself because you're really pissing me off.

Completely agree, the breathtaking speed of these changes and the extent of them is shocking.

I thought Boris said we'd be looking at normal/restriction free life from June 21st. What is being described now is far from normal

Plumedenom · 05/04/2021 21:57

People whining "Boris said we'd be back to normal", you do know he is just a person like you trying to react to the data in front of him right? Honestly, no one wants this, I'm not a Boris fan but for sure given his first instinct was to just ignore the whole thing, he probably would love to just get on as normal. It's just not possible in a pandemic!!
