Cannot wait for normality. But I don't give a shit about masks. I do miss the pub and dancing and festivals.
As soon as we can get as many people vaccinated as possible around the world the quicker it will happen.

Dowser · 12/04/2021 10:56

Cant wait to see our empty street’s thronging with people.
🤞

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/04/2021 14:29

I walk through our town centre to get to work, just left and it's great to see people out and about shopping, sitting outside cafés having a drink.

Dowser · 12/04/2021 16:27

@Waxonwaxoff0
That’s great to know
Just checking our little market town now to see what’s happening at the pubs

Hang on in there, @kittensarecute - I've seen your posts on other threads and I get you. I so miss amateur theatre too - am dram has made up about 95% of my social life since uni, it's how I met my fiance, and there's just nothing like the camaraderie and joy that you get from singing and dancing and working with other people to put together something really special. What kind of shows do you do?

It's really hard when the hobby that gives your life so much meaning is one of the things that is taking ages to come back because it needs people to be able to interact closely indoors, to be allowed to sing and touch and mix with lots of different people. But it will come back - it absolutely will. They closed the theatres because of plague in Shakespeare's day, and there was still a huge appetite to perform and audiences flocked to watch plays when they reopened. Humans have been coming together to sing and perform, whether for ceremonial reasons or entertainment, since prehistory. A year of social distancing isn't going to kill that - it's absolutely ingrained into our culture.

Like you, I can't wait for social distancing rules to lift so we can rehearse again - even being allowed to sing with other people indoors would be something! - but I promise it will come back. Hang on in there - think how much you will cherish that first day back at one of your groups. I'll never complain about a boring blocking rehearsal again! xx

Does anyone genuinely think that come 21 June there will be no masks, no queues, no crowd control and everything will go back to normal over night? I honest can not see it happening like that, gentle easing yes but no way normal.

No. There’s no way all adults will have been fully vaccinated and the virus is still out there. I think masks and SD will remain and more measures back in autumn as cases were low last summer and then mixing occurred and we ended up back with high numbers again.
GiveMeNovocain · 13/04/2021 13:52

By next autumn/winter pretty much everyone who wants to be vaccinated will be. They're rocketing through second doses now. Vaccines work. This is the end of restrictions.

rainbowleopardprint · 14/04/2021 06:58

But there was no vaccine last year.

Yes cases might increase but there will be fewer numbers in hospital.

Fruityfriday · 14/04/2021 07:32

So we will get to a point this year where we can get rid of SD masks and just carry on as normal? Heaving Xmas markets, pantos etc? I hope that's the case but I just can't see it at all.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 11:53

I sat in on a local public health meeting recently; how they spoke made me think they plan to keep up social distancing messages for at least 1 year. There was a lot of condemnation of people who don't practice strict social distancing. No acknowledgement of the harms that the pandemic controls have caused or how obviously unsustainable they are.

I kept my mouth shut.

PrincessNutNuts · 14/04/2021 16:41

I have hope for next spring if we don't let cases rise again and allow a troublesome variant to emerge to screw us all over.

I can't see earlier than that. Sorry.

I think it's definitely a possiblity if we hit the target of all adults offered the first vaccine dose by June, but equally wouldn't be surprised if some measures like masks and SD in shops remain.
BonnieDundee · 14/04/2021 22:46

Most people I know are saying "come round for a coffee and sod the restrictions". I haven't as yet but I am tempted. I suspect an awful lot more people are doing it and keeping quiet about it

Case numbers don’t matter now though - it’s the number in hospitals that is key. This is what the vaccine will be helping with.

Compliance with another set of restrictions would be low and the government know that.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/04/2021 15:18

@Localboyinthephotograph

Cases lead to hospitalisations.

Most people aren't fully vaccinated.

Millions aren't vaccinated at all.

Here's the recent Warwick modelling on hospitalisations and deaths for the next couple of months.

Doesn't matter as long as the number of hospitalizations don't risk the NHS being overwhelmed. That is basically what the gov has said.

The millions that are unvaccinated are the ones least likely to need hospital treatment, so if we do see an increase it won't be a huge one like in January.

goldielockdown2 · 15/04/2021 17:39

It was busy in town earlier. Social distancing mostly abandoned. On the bus home the banners from half the seats had been removed and people weren't leaving spaces. I noticed that some had their masks down.
I'm glad it's all moving forwards now.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/04/2021 17:41

I'm afraid that's not true @Waxonwaxoff0.

Under 50s are a lot less likely to die. But not as unlikely to go to hospital as you might think.

Here's the Warwick modelling. Unvaccinated under 50s in red.

40s are being vaccinated now, they should all be done by the time indoor mixing is permitted.
PrincessNutNuts · 15/04/2021 19:15

And three weeks after that, in the Warwick model hospitalisations begin to surge...
