The third wave has truly arrived. I am sorry to say but it is going to be a shit show in Eastern Europe. Some areas of Poland ran out of hospital beds weeks ago. Not reported but happening on the ground.

France - I can't even speak about France. Macron has been warned for months about this, and did nothing. He will blame the UK.

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 11:20

“The outlook is worse than frightening,” Jean-Michel Constantin, the head of the intensive care unit at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, told RMC radio on Monday.

“We’re already at the level of the second wave and we’re quickly getting close to the threshold of the first wave,” he said. “April is going to be dreadful.”

Baileysforchristmas · 31/03/2021 11:41

It’s so scary, I wish we could row our little island a bit further out to sea.

One school in Paris, 20 of the parents have died.

Yes - he most definitely will. Its been clear for some time now that he needed to lockdown but there has been so much prevarication and delay
TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 12:21

Found you guys again and caught up.

Are Europe's AZ vaccines produced in a different place to ours? I cannot understand the discrepancy in alleged cases of blood clots and was wondering whether we have totally different manufacturers etc?

Stunned at them wanting Sputnik - there were never any credible figures on infection rates and deaths etc coming out of Russia due to the levels of control the state has over media etc. I would find it very difficult to trust their reports on vaccine events or efficacy.

Along with the mismatch in the UK’s side effect results, I thought it was informally accepted that Sputnik is basically AZ? Wasn’t the AZ study hacked early in their phase 3 trials? I don’t get it either.

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 13:13

Yes I understood that the sputnik vaccine was ripped off from elsewhere too. I don't know of a single European friend of mine that would be comfortable with a vaccine that neither licensed or peer reviewed.

It is bizarre that Merkel should see this as the way forward. Worrying and alarming when we can see the other failures lately, it is completely out of character. She has always been a safe pair of hands.

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 13:14

20 parents have died, that is horrendous, and Macron is still insisting on keeping the schools open!

UserEleventyNine · 31/03/2021 13:15

Yes, I asked if there was any info on Sputnik side effects yesterday, having had a quick Google and failed to find any (not surprised).

I think that if there's any organised campaign to trash AZ, it's more likely to be Russia than Big Pharma, so they can present Sputnik as the vaccine that saved the world.

UserEleventyNine · 31/03/2021 13:21

Merkel seems to have completely lost her grip, what with the U turn on the Easter lockdown, and the grovelling apology she made.

But it was Merkel who foisted vdl on the EU when she knew she was incompetent. What did she think would happen when she herself was no longer around?

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 13:27

user I don't think is in accident that VDL is there - we will see in the coming months why it is important for her to be placed in that position. Even with the all the many dreadful mistakes VDL has made, she is still in post. That says it all. Her use goes beyond her ability to lead the commission.

TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 13:27

EU is beginning to look like a very precarious house of cards.

Cornettoninja · 31/03/2021 13:28

That’s believable @UserEleventyNine. The only thing I can’t get my head around in that scenario is Merkel being complicit. She’s not a stupid woman and has a scientific background. If you also take into account Germany’s history with Russia and communism it’s just bizarre.

3asAbird · 31/03/2021 13:28

OK with regards to Hungary I thought thye were mostly using the Russian vaccine so maybe its not as effective with new varients!
With no proper side effects and not hugely popular in itself how do we get a reliable data on safety.
I mean with Israel thats great for phizer and uk for AZ

Uk has had so many vaccine studies.

Sadly we know from not shutting down sept then refusing shut down October let to last 2 lockdown in uk and loads deaths.
As jvt says the deaths are baked in now even if France locks down tonight the virus is endemic and run riot though schools system like in the UK..
Feel sorry for the French macron totally to blame been ignoring his own doctors and scientists for weeks.
Vaccination make little difference at this stage its like shovelling snow in a blizzard.
Why its working better in uk is vaccines started doing 3rd lockdown with decreasing numbers of infections and to do this we had to shut schools.

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 13:28

Or not lead the commission as the case may be! Or lead them into disaster costing thousands of lives even....she looks quite untouchable from where I am sitting despite the EU parliament threatening to remove her. No sign of that happening any time soon. Things are really bad when Juncker wades in and criticises them - you know there is a problem then.

Baileysforchristmas · 31/03/2021 13:35

@3asAbird my sons girlfriend who is Hungarian doesn’t know anyone who has been vaccinated, no matter what age or health condition, she said nobody in Hungary seems to know who is receiving it, which is very strange, unless it’s just health workers 🤷‍♀️ She also said a lot of people are getting very sick.

That's really very strange, Hungary is reporting nearly 30% vaccinated. By the time we were at 5% vaccinated (UK 15th January) I heard of one or two plus some elderly relatives had appointments, by 10% (25th January) elderly family were vaccinated. 15th Feb group 1-4 completion was 23% of the population. How can people not know nearly 1 in 3 who've been vaccinated? Do you think the Hungarian government are lying about the figures?

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 15:02

Hungarians are using Sputnik.....

MRex · 31/03/2021 15:10

Sorry, it's 20.3% have had at least one jab and 30% cumulative doses. Equivalent to our 10th Feb but with more second doses. The point stands.

9.6m population, 2m first doses
Healthcare 63k nurses + 31.5k doctors
Care homes 55k-77k residents (depending on what publication to believe) + 25k care home staff and home support
Police 39k
Army 20k + 22k reservists
Teachers 75.4k elementary + 18.5k secondary
~375,000 people.

I'm running out of core professions to account for not doing all the elderly. Only 3.9% of the population are over 80 (370k) and 16.5% over 65 (1.6m). How did they get to 2m without having done almost all the over 65s?

Itsalonghaul · 31/03/2021 15:32

I am trying and failing to see how Boris Johnson would fair if he had resisted calls to lockdown for three solid months choosing to tell us that he knows better, and now thousands will die.

I am trying to imagine the backlash and the riots that would follow if our government had even attempted to over ride SAGE and hospitals in the way that Macron has done for months on end, and therefore:

The whole hospital service in France is now on the brink of collapse
The deaths of so many that would have otherwise survived
The failed vaccine programme due to his mindless comments about efficacy that could have saved them
The nightmare of so many pages to complete, and two appointments and all the rest for those that DO want the vaccine.
The totally incompetence of the EU he crows about
The lost tourist season for a second year in a row
The economical consequences of a third wave
The sting of the failed sanofi vaccine

I am trying to imagine how this would be received here in the UK. It is not just one or two mistakes, it is a spectacular failure from start to finish.

I am honestly horrified for them.
It is going to be extremely hard for France, and I am sorry they are going to have go through this, having just come out of it ourselves we are under no illusions what is coming to them Sad

You mean like last September when he knew better than SAGE, or last February when he knew better than the WHO?

Clearly Macron just didn't bribe Rupert Murdoch et al sufficiently for them to brush all his mistakes under the carpet.

Le pen must be really happy that macron is doing it so easy for her
