"Boris Johnson has warned the effects of a third wave of coronavirus will "wash up on our shores" from Europe.
The PM said the UK should be "under no illusion" we will "feel effects" of growing cases on the continent."

anyone else worried that the planned out of lockdown now won't happen?

You also need to stop scaremongering @kittensarecute ,of course the government don't want to keep us locked down forever it ,s nonsensical.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 18:40

Hospital admissions.

Going down.

Great graph. Good to see

I don’t think the government want us to stay locked down, of course not, there’s not doubt it’s arduous right now but the data looks really good

MrsEWeatherwax · 22/03/2021 18:48

The north east has had it’s third wave. Or does it not count if it’s not London.

Wow, that's not a graph I'd seen That's really telling. And amazing Well done scientists and NHS and all the vaccine centre volunteers
likeamillpond · 22/03/2021 18:52

@Delatron

He needs to be very careful with his ‘narrative’ people are on their knees, lost businesses, homes, mental health in tatters. If vaccinating at least 50% of your population has no impact then what’s the point?

He’s struggling to justify lockdown going on for another month or two due to low cases and high vaccinations. They’re ramping up the fear message yet again. I predicted a scary new variant will be discovered just before Easter.

Cant believe there are still people out there who seriously believe the government are doing this for fun. Really?

That fact aline frightens me more than anything.

Delatron · 22/03/2021 18:56

I never said they are doing this for ‘fun’ they need people to comply for a few more months hence the current narrative. When they want people to get back to the office and get back to the pub the narrative changes. What a shame some people can’t see this. Or you don’t believe the government feeds the media stories and then checks the public reaction?

Changeismyname · 22/03/2021 18:56

@Chatterbox1987

Or again it could be gearing us up to ban all holidays this summer...feeling the effects doesn't mean we get the wave... could mean a ban on all travel because of their third wave.... judging by all the ministers comments lately it does seem they are gearing up to ban travel, using Europe's third wave as the reason.
I think this is the most likely outcome. The messaging in the last week has all been around foreign travel and problems abroad. The foreign travel restrictions being lifted was always going to be subject to review and it certainly feels like travel and holidays aren’t going to happen.
Delatron · 22/03/2021 18:57

Thank goodness some people on here haven’t lost the ability to think critically. Imagine blindly believing everything you were told and having so much faith in the government. Because they have never lied or manipulated the population have they?

I agree.
dividedwefall · 22/03/2021 19:00

It has just been one big year long wave for some of us who have been in some form of lockdown since it started but not really had huge deaths or cases (thanks horrible Labour councils).

Boris is just laying out the scene for the extension to the emergency covid laws. Also rolling out mass asymptomatic testing to big up the numbers to support the case. The whole thing is unnatural and surreal.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 19:01

Yes there’s manipulation but different to what people are claiming. There’s no way any government want to be stuck like this. Why would they it’s costing a massive amount.

Delatron · 22/03/2021 19:09

Boris has gone from one extreme to the other let’s be fair. He didn’t ‘want’ a lockdown in December. He refused to shut the schools even ONE day early. Then an massive about turn and now we’re in lockdown for months. You have more faith in his ‘strategy’ than I have. It’s a complete mess. He’s now lurched to the ‘extreme caution’ side and we’re all supposed to suffer months more of a lockdown. Whilst businesses go under.
I don’t even think them government know what they want but lovely that you have faith in them. Even a year later...

Chatterbox1987 · 22/03/2021 19:10

How can any European leader look atvthat graph and not laugh at Merkle and macron embarrassingly say the vaccine is not effective.... these countries have restrictions too so its not solely down to lockdown.
MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 19:11

Who are you talking to?

If me. I tend to listen to scientists than Johnson.

But keep up the patronising whatever

Delatron · 22/03/2021 19:14

@MarshaBradyo yes I tend to listen to the scientists. The ones who said there would always be new variants and how they can tweak the vaccines easily.

You were the one who mentioned the government. Lovely that you have so much faith in them though!

Worldgonecrazy · 22/03/2021 19:14

Adam Wagner on Twitter analysing the next lot of legislation which was published today. Seems to suggest overseas travel ban in place until the end of June.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/03/2021 19:18

God knows I’m no fan of Boris, but what is he supposed to do? He doesn’t have a crystal ball any more than we do -we’re still pretty much in uncharted waters with this bastard thing.,
He can’t say everything’s definitely going to be better soon, so go ahead and book your holidays - because things are still likely to be dubious, or God forbid, perhaps worse than now.

But 🤞the speedy vaccine rollout will mean that some sort of hope was justified.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 19:19

It’s not faith it’s that it’s costing huge amounts so I really can’t take claims that they want to do this for the reasons some posters cite, sounds like conspiracy stuff.

I know it’s a long slog and I’m hating it. But there’s no point in thinking government don’t want to get economy moving. Of course there’s internal conflicts but this has always been pressure from two directions.

What would you want? Faster opening of everything? What would you change

Pootle40 · 22/03/2021 19:21

Take everything with a pinch of salt. But no, not concerned at all given our vaccination programme.

Delatron · 22/03/2021 19:22

I don’t think the OP was about international travel though. We’re only in March so fair enough they can’t say holidays are on.

The OP was about Boris talking today about a certain ‘third wave’ and whether this would delay the end of lockdown.

Delatron · 22/03/2021 19:24

@MarshaBradyo I would like them to do as they said. Go by data not dates. So if hospital administrations and deaths are low then the balance has tipped.

iVampire · 22/03/2021 19:24

It’s a Tory government - every instinct will be to get business going again

So I guess Boris must have seen a really pessimistic briefing paper

And my weary resignation kicks in. Because I am CEV, and those of us living with blood cancers have some of the highest admissions to ICU and the poorest of all response levels to the vaccine (ok, that’s initial results only, but a thoroughly depressing set)

So for me it’s not just a case of being as sick of it all as the next person

It’s that nasty risk of severe illness that’s just not going away

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2021 19:26
@MarshaBradyo I would like them to do as they said. Go by data not dates. So if hospital administrations and deaths are low then the balance has tipped.
Me too.

But tbh I hadn’t interpreted the op as meaning it would change.

The data looks good. We meet the conditions (so far) and I’d take language like ‘wash up’ with a grain of salt. It doesn’t mean anything concrete to me. Maybe I’m just really exhausted with rhetoric and ups and downs of this year so just listen out for the real data and change.

MagicSummer · 22/03/2021 19:27

But surely if we have made a difference with our vaccination programme, we should stop people going abroad while their 3rd wave is going on, and stop people coming here from any country affected? We need to keep OUR country safe - let the others catch up

Delatron · 22/03/2021 19:34

Do we think the third wave in Europe will last from March- say July/August though? That’s a five month wave.
