Have you heard there are zero covid positive patients in Critical care in Gloucestershire?

fadingfast · 18/03/2021 16:35

@MissConductUS

Moderna are apparently on track to deliver their first batch of vaccines to the UK in April.

That's great news. Moderna is a brilliant company. They just went public in 2019, so quite young. Delivering the vaccine in a year is just amazing. They are currently trialing their first booster specifically tailored for variants. They have been a huge part of the program here and I know lots of people who've had the Moderna jab. Their main factory in Massachusetts is in an old building that used to produce film for Polaroid cameras. You have to be old like me to remember Polaroid cameras. Grin Go Boston!

For anyone on a Twitter, there’s a really good scientist from Moderna who devotes a lot of time to explaining the science behind the vaccines (not just Moderna) and dispelling a lot of myths around them. The Twitter handle is @sailorrooscout for anyone who wants to look her up. She is very upbeat and reassuring for those of us with a tendency to panic Smile

Today’s figures are out, small fall in cases and another epic fall in deaths (95, down from 181 a week ago).

@fadingfast, yes Chise / sailorrooscout seems lovely, doesn't she, and you're right, she's always very knowledgeable and reassuring. (That's actually where I got the moderna news from!)

Oldtimer2020 · 18/03/2021 17:06

Does anyone know what’s happening with J&J jab? Is that with the Regulators now? I wonder when they might come on stream.....

herecomesthsun · 18/03/2021 17:13

I have just had an email to say I can stop shielding from 1st April. That is good news! (unless it is an April Fool, in which case Matt Hancock has really poor taste in jokes Grin)

I just found and followed her on Twitter and she's great, so thanks for this.

I'm in New York and am an HCP. This time last year we the epicenter of the infection in the US. It was truly the worst situation imaginable. We are still seeing covid cases but far, far fewer obviously, we're much better at treating them and all hospital personnel are vaccinated. Even Sally in accounts, as she's deemed "essential to hospital operations". Things are so much better now.

Louisa7747 · 18/03/2021 18:09

95 deaths recorded today, is this the first time in a long time that we've been in double figures on a week day?

TheChineseChicken · 18/03/2021 18:09

Yes please to boozy picnic! The weather looks a bit underwhelming for the next week or so. I’m sure by Easter time last year it was really hot but maybe that was later in April.

I’m a bit disappointed about the vaccine delays - for purely selfish reasons in that I want my jab! I was getting excited about the under 50s group being announced. As long as it doesn’t delay the roadmap I suppose that’s all that matters as I am about as low risk as it gets.

Numbers are looking good though Smile

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 18/03/2021 18:09

Oh goodness New York looked frightening last year. Can't imagine what that was like for you. Lovely to hear things are going much better now.

I think so.
OrangeBananaFish · 18/03/2021 18:24

Whats the situation with Novovax? We're still waiting approval there aren't we? Seems to be taking forever with this and J&J to get approved. Do you think the approvers worked all night and day to get the first 3 approved and now doing their normal hours for these since we have vaccines which appear to be working? Probably not, but these two seem to be taking a lot longer than previous vaccines.

Inastatus · 18/03/2021 18:28

Great news to have the safety of the AZ vaccine confirmed 😀

I posted about this but it must have been on another covid tread. Novavax is wrapping up their stage III trials and expects EUA in the US by May.

Novavax Counting on COVID-19 Vaccine U.S. EUA by May

Presumably, approval in the UK would happen around the same time or shortly afterward. The really good news is that interim testing shows 89% efficacy and the trials are reportedly going very well.

The Novavax approach is really clever. Rather than recruit your cells to make the spike protein it's produced in mass quantities in bioreactors and then used as the main ingredient in the jab.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 18/03/2021 18:40

So Boris is getting his jab tomorrow. I know he has been losing weight and working out lately but please God like him keep his shirt on🙈

carolinesbaby · 18/03/2021 18:56

Easter last year was boiling. I remember it well because I had to cancel my leave and worked overtime over the bank holidays because work was so busy. In fact I cancelled all my leave between March and August, and worked overtime most weekends. Then my school told me I wasn't a proper keyworker 🙄because I'm not a nurse.

tootyfruitypickle · 18/03/2021 19:20

I just checked my local area on the messenger site for the first time for ages and we are nearly in single figures per 100k, plus no cases the last day of recording !! We were tier 4 over Xmas. Makes me feel a bit better about the vaccine delay
