@alreadytaken - that’s a reassuring and fascinating article!

Spanish news have ruled out that the death of the woman that has died post vaccine had anything to do with it

Bordois · 19/03/2021 09:48

I once saw the issue with variants explained by saying its like when someone you know changes their appearance - they may look completely different but you'd still recognise them.

Latest from the Zoe app shows symptomatic cases shrinking. (Daily Mail link)
It was good to see this given the levelling off this week of positive tests with the increased testing.
It’s by less than the previous week but Tim Spector says this was expected and he expects it to accelerate again.

Ridiculous news rather than good. France who had been saying AZ should only be used in under 65s. Are now saying AZ should only be used in over 55s!

Seriously 🤦‍♀️

Speechless and I am never speechless

Frazzled2207 · 19/03/2021 14:35

also we're over the magic 50% of adults in England with first doses. 50.5%.
Most regions actually on 52/53% but London behind on 39%.

Frazzled2207 · 19/03/2021 14:38

@MissConductUS
I am taking part in the novavax trial and get all kinds of positive noises from the docs involved. It's bloody good stuff. That said our trial is strictly 2 doses 3 weeks apart. Assuming it gets approved here will be interesting to see if the government sticks with the 12 week gap. AFAIK no novavax trial has tried anything other than a 3 week gap.
They seem to think they will get the green light int he UK in the next few weeks anyway

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/03/2021 14:41

I wonder if 40/30 year olds will end up getting Novavax, of it's to be approved in the next few weeks? I rather hope so, at 39! All the scientists I follow on Twitter seen to think it's going to be extremely effective.

Frazzled2207 · 19/03/2021 14:48

@whatswithtodaytoday
is an intersting question because although the UK probably doesn't have that many pfizer doses left other than 2nd doses (as they ordered 40m) but has many many AZ (100m).
I would have thought the population would be better protected overall with a mix of vaccines as some work better with dodgy strains than others. But I don't know (obviously)
Don't forget J&J, or Moderna. some of us will be getting Moderna next month it would appear.

MissConductUS · 19/03/2021 14:54

@Frazzled2207, that's great news and thank you for being part of the trial! I think that Novavax is going to be another home run, to use a baseball analogy. Grin I volunteered for the US trials but since I wasn't in an area with a high infection rate at the time they didn't have them where I live.

Here are the stats in the US as of yesterday:

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/03/2021 15:19

That's true @Frazzled2207, I was expecting Moderna to be too late but it'll probably be about the same time now. Obvs a huge number will get AZ, and I agree best to spread them out across the population. I wonder if J&J is better used on younger people? But probably best to just get it in arms asap.

So just for 55 to 65 year old then... 😏

It is ideal to have multiple vaccines based on different technologies. As more data accumulates it should become clear that some work better in certain populations than others and doctors can select accordingly. And you're quite correct, we should put every available jab into every available arm now.

@MissConductUS
ah thanks for that very useful!

Yeah I was keen to get involved in a vaccine trial and novavax is the biggest running in the UK. I just happen to live one mile from the (very ordinary district general) hospital which happens to be one of 15 or so involved.

suspect at the end of the day the government will go with whatever comes most quickly.
carolinesbaby · 19/03/2021 15:34

If the French are saying AZ for 55-65 year olds only both my DPs fall in that range - there may be hope for them yet!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 19/03/2021 15:35

No swapping it around so now only the over 55s

Frazzled2207 · 19/03/2021 15:53

The French are bloody bonkers (i’m a French speaker so generally on the side of the French tbh).
A bit of a change of tune since macron himself said it was “quasi ineffective” on older people. Said older people are going to be doubly confused now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/03/2021 16:13

Today’s figures are out. All very good and the 7 day rolling average of deaths has fallen below 100 for the first time since mid October.

louisejxxx · 19/03/2021 16:14

How bizarre! I get more staggered by the antics of Europe in general each and every day.

So pleased with today’s numbers - less than 7000 in hospital, cases dropping by a steeper percentage than the last few days have seen. And we’re now 11 days on from schools reopening where you might start to think cases will uptick.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/03/2021 16:16

Maybe the massive increase in testing is preventing more transmission than the reopening of schools is causing? I know some schools have things organised very safely but others don’t, it’s hard to know from anecdote which is more prevalent.
