Vaccine rollout in Europe

The vaccine rollout in Europe is turning into a complete disaster.

The German gov could not credibly allow a change from the manufacturers recommendations. It simply would not be acceptable to the public. That’s a cultural difference, not political or an issue of competence. The flexibility and pragmatism shown by the British (and the entire vaccine response is a prime example of this) has always been most admirable to the German public. But it’s not in the German culture to accept it. It’s nothing to do with the competence of the vaccine rollout.

HeadSpin5 · 23/02/2021 07:43

Really interesting to hear that perspective @newstart1234, thank you.

newstart1234 · 23/02/2021 08:29

There is a saying something like - the British don’t need plan a to succeed because they’ve always found success with plan b, c, d, or e.

buttery81 · 23/02/2021 08:47

DH’s aunt is in Spain, in her 70s and hasn’t heard anything at all about getting the vaccine Sad

Kokeshi123 · 23/02/2021 08:59

This whole debacle is so utterly depressing. I'm a Remainer, I was hoping that the UK would find a way to rejoin at some point. It's going to be harder to make a case for this now.

More to the point, how dismaying to see Macron acting like such a little shit (stirring up vaccine skepticism in France, a country which already has serious issues in this department). I always had him down as a reasonable solid centrist politician.

He's behaved like a six-year-old who's just been told that he's not getting an ice cream due to his behavior ("Well, I DON'T CARE, because I don't want one of your STINKY ice creams anyway. Those ice creams are POO BUM ice creams and I don't even WANT one..." etc. etc.).

Lives and jobs are going to lost as a result of the damage he, Merkel and several others have done to the rollout in the EU.

Baileysforchristmas · 23/02/2021 09:27

@Kokeshi123 Macron is the worst, I always quite liked him and couldn’t understand why the French weren’t keen on him until this happened.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/14131729/germany-france-covid-thousands-refuse-oxford-jab-scaremongering/

Its true France and Germany not the EU.
Other countries maybe faring better
No surprise that national leaders and government going against ema saying oxford az safe all ages has damaged confidence in their citizens only wanting phizer.

Makes you wonder why they kicked off about az.
When they dident kick off at phizer.
Moderna will arrive but less than expected doses as they had to take care usa 1st.

Baffled at macron and plans to give French only 1 dose.
When is janson vaccine on stream.
Europe not even ordered valderna and norovax coming available autumn winter.

Also if I was European I be asking whats the status of Sanofi France and curevac Germany as they have cure vac 70million euros..

It shouldn't matter to us but even though be left eu its not like we don't give a shit about Europe many of our freinds and family live in Europe.
We hope to travel there on holiday.
But them being behind does pose risks to uk as we trade and travel closely.

This vaccine issue on the back of how he has treated lorry drivers over December and January has completely changed my view on Macron. I also thought he was a good politician before this.

I can't believe the EU are putting their annoyance that the UK vaccine is good above actually getting their populations out of the covid mess.

pommedeterre · 23/02/2021 10:16

Italy are also stating that AZ vaccine doesn't work for all age groups and are using it for under 55s only by the way 3asAbird.

newstart1234 · 23/02/2021 10:26

Janson vaccine expected to be approved mid March by EMA. Not sure how many doses have been delivered and/or stockpiled in preparation.

That! My Aunt married a German man. He was always surprised at the blithe way we, as individual and as a nation, approach many new situations. He always said that he understood that it was an attitude that got results but could never do it as he couldn't bear the thought of the initial failure... of getting his feet wet, as he put it!
TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2021 10:36

EU will catch up. AZ supply will ramp up and there are other options coming down the tracks.

In Ireland, I expect they’ll quietly drop the current guidance on AZ (not to be given to over 70s). It was only guidance anyway. The reason for that guidance was more to do with extreme caution/conservatism by our CMO. He needs a dose of reality. But it wasn’t a political decision.

There are no issues with take up here and AZ supplies are being used for under 70s.

Our biggest issue here is that the U.K. will he safely out of lock down before us. That’s going to be tough. Boris’ roadmap is putting a lot of pressure on our government. But I welcome that because they need a kick up the arse and a plan beyond keeping us all locked up forever.

IrmaFayLear · 23/02/2021 10:38

Spoke to Italy yesterday.

The vaccine issue isn't even front-page news - they seem to have swept it under the carpet, but there is growing anger at the EU and its sloth - on all things.

In relative's area the health centre is open for vaccinations for two hours in the afternoon, and is slowly ploughing through the over 80s. No sports centres/town halls being vaccination centres with teams of volunteers...

3asAbird · 23/02/2021 10:42

@pommedeterre

Yes I think I read that too. Along with Switzerland and Sweden thats their perogative.

The 3 issues are

They kicked off they wanted immediate az vaccines last month
Whilst publicly dissing it for older age groups contracticting and doubting the trust of the EMA.

Its fine to use az under 55s
However without enough phizer or other vaccines they prefer how many of their more vulnerable or elderly have they managed to vaccinate ?
Quite possible they have different criteria top groups that uk thinks its a priority .
Its upto each country what they do.
But they saying Europe has to be united and mass vaccine buying was the best for them.

Simple supply and demand is major issue.
Now confidence in limited vaccines they can get.
Also behind on orders for other vaccines
Lack updates progress on Sanofi.

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2021 10:47

Sanofi never got off the starting blocks I believe.

There’s a big chunk of luck involved too. U.K. bet heavily on AZ and it came through. The EU went the other way and it didn’t.

It’ll all even out by the autumn, but we will have a shitter early summer than the UK.

Dongdingdong · 23/02/2021 10:49

EU will catch up

Catch up’s not good enough though is it? The more they delay the more lives will be lost, the more economic damage done.

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2021 10:50

Catch up’s not good enough though is it?

It’ll have to be 🤷‍♀️

Most EU countries didn’t have the high early death rate of the U.K. swings and roundabouts.

The next few months will be a bit crap, for sure.

Do you have any source for that?

Quite a few European countries are not using AZ for older people, but other than France I don't know of any that claim it doesn't work, just that they want more data to be sure and will reevaluate then.
Italy has already raised the threshold from 55 to 65.

Sadly a real hatchet job has been done on AZ.

Relative was under the impression that my side effects were covid, ie, "Have you still got covid from your jab?" Angry

I'd missed the raising guinan sorry.

The Italians I speak to on a daily basis believe it only works on the young (and are intelligent people!).

pommedeterre · 23/02/2021 11:50

Can we get the unused vaccines back?! Reading about unused vaccines sat around makes me want to cry.

Baileysforchristmas · 23/02/2021 12:00

@pommedeterre the poorer EU countries are crying out for vaccines, some haven’t received any yet. I don’t know why Germany aren’t sending there unwanted vaccines to other desperate countries within the EU?

OP posts:
pommedeterre · 23/02/2021 12:19

Yes, that's even better as we still honour our contract. Anywhere where people will be grateful and bloody use them basically!

You'd bet on our science in the UK every time though, even as an ardent remoaner you can't knock our science/scientists.
