A continuation of the thread for those of us taking part in the Vaccine trial.
Never had a thread continue to part 2 before so quite excited.

I'm in the 50+ age bracket and have just found out that 2 friends in same age group (no vulnerability) have been contacted by NHS for vaccine. I am happy to wait for Novavax crossover as long as they get a move on, but it will be tempting to go for NHS vaccine if I get the call up....

Frazzled2207 · 14/02/2021 16:55

@vargas
not surprised. I really hope we get a date soon. Am quite impatient about it.

I got told vaccinations would be April.

andadietcoke · 14/02/2021 20:37

I think we were told March, with everyone having had their two doses by mid-April.

BG2015 · 14/02/2021 21:24

My friend whose a year younger than me (51) went for her vaccine on Friday.

She does have asthma (as do I) and has had an odd couple of days off work with it over the past few years.

She is very good friends with her GP though so I don't know if that's got something to do with it.

Woventabby · 17/02/2021 17:57

I had my Month 3 appointment this week. Nothing much to add to what has been reported here already, but a person I spoke to mentioned a possibility of a booster dose if we stay on the trial. Novavax's Press Release dated 28 Jan mentions about the South African trial and they started development of a booster/combination vaccine for new variants in early January. It mentions that they expect to select ideal candidates. I wonder if ir.novavax.com/news-releases/news-release-details/novavax-covid-19-vaccine-demonstrates-893-efficacy-uk-phase-3

Woventabby · 17/02/2021 17:58

Sorry. Pressed the button too early. I was wondering if we are ideal candidates for this.

At my 3 month appt last week the doc said to call if I have any of the symptoms on the card or 'even if you just have a headache'. I had a 2 day headache and a little bit of sore throat a few days later so I called and they were super keen to see me and get me tested. I told the doc on the phone that it wasn't uncommon for me to have headaches / sore throats and it was probably just allergies but she didn't care! She said they are very keen to spot any cases of Covid so I have just done my 3rd test and sent it in. No results yet. My headache is gone but I still have a bit of congestion and tiny bit of sore throat but that might now be from swabbing my tonsils - Smile. I will be VERY surprised if I'm positive, particularly as I WFH so I'm hardly heavily exposed to others.

Each centre must be different. At my appt last week the nurse said it had to be like the worse headache you've ever had. And if you have diarrhoea it has to be really severe before we called in.
Vargas · 18/02/2021 08:23

Torvean - yes I was very surprised, and lo and behold I'm negative for Covid. I'm thinking lockdown is not great for vaccine trials and maybe they are just not getting enough positive cases so they're desperate to test anyone with even a tiny chance of having it?! Who knows.

andadietcoke · 18/02/2021 08:34

I got what I would describe as 'the sniffles' just before Christmas - bit of a cold, very mild sore throat. I was told that I should have 'called it in' which seemed bizarre.

BG2015 · 18/02/2021 10:24

Just been for my 3 month apt at Cheadle, Staffs.

They have a date for the crossover to start - 22nd March, but the medics think it will be the week after.

Letters to go out next week. I'm going to stay in the trial even if I get offered the vaccine through the national programme! Better to wait 21 days than 12 weeks!

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2021 10:51

@BG2015
thanks for the update. I really hope I get a date soon and will stay in the trial. But at this rate I think friends in their late 40s might get their first before I get my first. But worth waiting to a .get the best stuff and b. get the second within 3 weeks as you say

@Woventabby
More than happy to stick around for an autumn booster too! I suspect not everyone will get that. Depending on what happens between now and then of course.

I've got absolutely nowhere trying to volunteer to help out with the actual physical jabbing operation so am very pleased to be able to 'do my bit' in this way.

One question I will have and nobody will have the answer to is how our vaccine will feed into the 'vaccine passport' system when we have it. We should hopefully feel confident that it'll be sorted though as the vaccine minister himself (Nadhim Zahawi) is on the trial I think. One of them anyway and I think it's this one.

Did you get the impression that this start date was for the trial as a whole or just for your centre?

I was certainly told a couple of weeks ago that we would get some sort of certificate to say we have had the vaccine but no idea whether this would be a standard format.

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2021 13:35

@Daftapath
Yes was told the same but with the proviso that “it might not necessarily mean anything legally”. If there ends up being some kind of app that confirms you’ve had it- will be essential to travel abroad at some point IMO- then it should be possible to feed in the info, even if we have to inform GP

BG2015 · 18/02/2021 18:15

I got the impression it was a go ahead for everyone after they'd got the go ahead this week.

Wished I'd asked about a vaccine certificate now!

AVictoryProduct · 18/02/2021 18:30

I had a call from the Hexham site yesterday just to chase up some test results. Anyway, I asked about the crossover study and she said they'd had the approval, they were just waiting to start. She also said most people would have the second two jabs as part of the crossover study at their 4th appointment. Those who have had their 4th appointment already will be called back.

AVictoryProduct · 18/02/2021 18:31

I mean the first of the second lot of jabs at your 4th appointment. Not both at the same time!

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2021 18:36

All sounds good. I suppose they have to be sure the supply is there to start jabbing.

Novavax pledging 1.1 billion doses at cost to COVAX (pending authorization of the vaccine) gavi.org/news/media-room/gavi-signs-memorandum-understanding-novavax-behalf-covax-facility
That would make it more than half the COVAX hoped-for supply in 2021.

Am now hearing on here about so many stories about people in their 50s and 40s getting vaccinated I hope they get a move on or they will lose a lot of participants. Daily Fail (sorry) today is suggesting everyone in their 40s will be vaccinated in April at this rate.

OP posts:
Daftapath · 19/02/2021 12:19

@Frazzled2207 I'm worried about that too. Really do not want to get a message to have the vaccine via nhs! I'm in my 50's Confused

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 19/02/2021 12:20

I know. I'm still determined to stick with my commitment to Novavax. The sooner they can complete their study, the better for everyone. I want to take part in the crossover. I like the idea that they will trial booster vaccines for the variants. It would help if I had confirmation from the my vaccine centre that they're doing the crossover and when it will be. I'm encouraged by reports on here, but it's not quite the same thing.

It will test my resolve when I get that call/letter from the NHS for my jab. I'm in group 6 so it won't be long. Plus I got a shielding email yesterday which rattled me slightly.

I'm happy to sit tight though. DD22 caught it at work (hospital) and DS13 caught it off her but I didn't!

BG2015 · 19/02/2021 12:22

I'm amazed at the people who've been vaccinated but aren't seeing the general public e.g NHS office staff, counsellors working from home.

And although I don't begrudge anyone the vaccine and I'm genuinely pleased when I hear people are going to get their jabs I do feel very confused by some of them.

I'm a teacher. I have 30 kids in my class, none of whom can social distance. I have friends who teach over a hundred different kids in a day in high school, yet someone working in an office (yes they may work for the NHS) gets a vaccine 🤷‍♀️ just don't get it!

BG2015 · 19/02/2021 12:25

I too wonder if I get the text to get the NHS vaccine will I be able to resist and stick with Novavax. I'm determined to ride it out - but getting that text will be hard to look at and do nothing.

I'm 52 so I know it could be soon!
