Pritti Patel now saying we can't walk with another person

Anyone see this morning today. In her interview she claimed that we should walk cycle and run alone

I understood the rules to allow a walk with one other person.

I walk my dog twice a week with a friend. Rest of the time I'm alone with dog on walks and it's the only thing that keeps me sane at the moment. Take that away and I dont think I can cope for much longer.

Make the rules clearer ffs!!!

There is a difference between what the government are asking you to do and what you are legally obligated to do. Two dog walks a week (assuming only one person with each dog) that are socially distanced are something I would continue to do unless the law changed to say otherwise.

Blue565 · 14/01/2021 14:04

She can claim what she likes, she's wrong (until the law is updated anyway)

XenoBitch · 14/01/2021 14:06

Unless it is on the Gov website, give it no thought. Watching stuff like that is why a lot of people were convinced that we were only allowed 1 hour exercise each day.

Bonkerz · 14/01/2021 14:07

I think it was clear the 2 women who got Starbucks and went outside their county were doing it as a social thing rather than exercise. That's what Patel was condemning this morning.
If you go for a jog do it alone in a place that's close to home. No need to drive and no need to stop for coffee first. Sure do it 2m away from someone else but then it's not social it's exercise as you can't have a chat.

PotentPangolin · 14/01/2021 14:11

Make the rules clearer ffs

The rules are clear. I would urge everyone to read the Guidance, including Ms Patel, the rest of the cabinet and especially the police.

You can exercise with your household, your support bubble and currently one other person.

PotentPangolin · 14/01/2021 14:11

For those who think they know what the guidance should say but haven't read it:

www.gov.uk/guidance/national-lockdown-stay-at-home

PotentPangolin · 14/01/2021 14:13

I would also draw her attention to the following Guidance about travel for exercise:
outdoor exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 14/01/2021 14:14

What they said...Pritti Patel can bore off!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 14/01/2021 14:16

Maybe its a sign of what is to change? Although I think stopping people walking for a chat is pointless as we need some social contact and I am still expected to go in office and this could mean people sneak into others homes instead of going for a walk outside

Rosehip10 · 14/01/2021 14:16

Pritti Patel is an airhead

Sitt · 14/01/2021 14:17

“ I think it was clear the 2 women who got Starbucks and went outside their county were doing it as a social thing rather than exercise. That's what Patel was condemning this morning. ”

It’s always going to be a social thing. Because otherwise people would only be able to meet people they hate for exercise. Let’s not be thought policey and “if you’re enjoying the other person’s company it’s not exercise” about it all - chatting while walking outside and drinking a coffee is perfectly fine. You can even laugh while doing it.

ClaudiaWankleman · 14/01/2021 14:17

I mean, this is the woman who said that the death penalty applied to people found erroneously guilty would be a deterrent to actual criminals.

She is deranged.

SlopesOff · 14/01/2021 14:17

Pritti Patel never makes any sense regardless of what she is saying.

Check the Government guidelines if you want something that (almost) makes sense. The woman is a disaster.

Thatwentbadly · 14/01/2021 14:21

We are in a pandemic. It has always been sensible to have a little social contact as possible not to do everything we are allowed. Is she advising or saying it’s illegal. It’s different.

Angel2702 · 14/01/2021 14:22

It will be a shame if they stop it. 1-1 with a personal coach / trainer has been a godsend for many people.

ceeveebee · 14/01/2021 14:23

Priti Patel got the rules wrong during the press conference, saying that recreation was allowed, when it actually isn’t any more. She really doesn’t seem to be familiar with either the guidance or the legislation which is worrying given that she is responsible for enforcing them

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 14/01/2021 14:23

It's terrifying how little people's mental health is being considered at all right now, terrifying how little people are doing to challenge it as well. This has been going on for nearly a year now, humans need social contact, and meeting one person (heaven forbid- socially! And not just to exercise) if you are keeping distance and are outside has such a tiny risk of the virus being spread.

It's concerning too with regards to stopping the spread- the more people are pushed, dictated to, the more their needs are ignored- the closer they become to pushing back and in this instance, sticking two fingers up and not complying with far more than this one rule, so it's counterproductive with the potential to do more harm than good, and no one needs that right now.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2021 14:23

@Sitt

This is why they should just do away with the whole 'only allowed to meet for exercise' thing and just say you can meet one other person socially in an outdoor space. This whole thing about walking and talking is not exercise is ridiculous. Walking is exercise, be it brisk or a gentle stroll. The more they come out with these nonsense rules, the more I think it is about control, not Covid.
PleaseHoldCaller1 · 14/01/2021 14:24

the title of this post just means even more people will be confused! It will pop up on active threads and not everyone will read the thread to see that this is not a change to the guidance.

The up to date guidance is on the gov.uk website.

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/01/2021 14:28

I'm happy for mn to change title but that is what she claimed in her interview and I'm pretty sure it will be flagged up by Journos in the daily briefing.

OP posts:
Sitt · 14/01/2021 14:29

I agree XenoBitch. Either say “this is a permitted opportunity to have some social contact” or stop people meeting in person altogether (I don’t agree with the latter). The nitpicking and anxious “is it a social walk or an exercise walk” is just ridiculous. Especially given that it is completely ok for a mother and toddler to meet another mother and toddler for a walk outside where each of the toddlers will spend about 15 minutes examining drain covers or chain link fencing while everyone else waits

TempsPerdu · 14/01/2021 14:31

You actually listen to anything Priti Patel says?

FloraFocus · 14/01/2021 14:33

No minglin'.

justaweeone · 14/01/2021 14:35

I fancied a walk on Sunday so I went with my neighbour.
Walked much further than I would of by myself but more importantly felt much safer as was in isolated countryside.

FloraFocus · 14/01/2021 14:37

Except I believe it's still allowed under rules. Socially distanced of course. So I'll be taking no notice of this.
