Pritti Patel now saying we can't walk with another person

Anyone see this morning today. In her interview she claimed that we should walk cycle and run alone

I understood the rules to allow a walk with one other person.

I walk my dog twice a week with a friend. Rest of the time I'm alone with dog on walks and it's the only thing that keeps me sane at the moment. Take that away and I dont think I can cope for much longer.

Make the rules clearer ffs!!!

@Sitt

I agree XenoBitch. Either say “this is a permitted opportunity to have some social contact” or stop people meeting in person altogether (I don’t agree with the latter). The nitpicking and anxious “is it a social walk or an exercise walk” is just ridiculous. Especially given that it is completely ok for a mother and toddler to meet another mother and toddler for a walk outside where each of the toddlers will spend about 15 minutes examining drain covers or chain link fencing while everyone else waits
Also what is exercise for one person is a lazy Sunday ‘walk’ for another....

How will you start policing that ?!?

You actually listen to anything Priti Patel says?

^This. In a cabinet of complete mediocrities she stands out as below average.

ptumbi · 14/01/2021 14:49

Oh the gov is doing all it can now to keep us in a state of perpetual dread and fear. (It's so that in Spring they can lean back and soak up the relief and gratitude of the hundreds of thousands of people who were never at risk of dying from Covid - that they didn't die of Covid, thanks be to BoZo)

Priti is following the gov line - keep us all in fear, not knowing what the rules are, on the back foot, throw confusion about the guidance, make sure we don't think too hard about why the NHS is on its knees and has been for decades but particularly in the past 9 months when it could have been hugely invested in and be fit for service....

loulouljh · 14/01/2021 14:51

Well regardless I will be walking with a friend several times a week. It is good for my mental health, it is outside and we don't walk hand in hand! I suspect most people will share the same view...

Robbybobtail · 14/01/2021 14:52

Priti Patel is not someone I will be listening to for advice on what I should be doing - especially after her speech the other day when she said she was in support of our “poor, hard working” police fining people for “not following the spirit of the guidelines”. So basically supporting any old power-hungry, arsehole plod who wants to bully someone for walking with a friend, driving 5 miles to meet a friend or getting a take-out coffee. Really sensible to give that your blessing! It’s disgusting.
They are ramping up the fear factor now because it’s out of control and to deflect from the fact that this is largely now caused by their own incompetence. They want us to be frightened to leave our homes. I’m not falling for it and neither should you.

wildraisins · 14/01/2021 14:52

Until it comes out as official advice it's just her opinion. Ignore it and follow the official guidelines.

@PotentPangolin

And for those who think they know what the actual law should say but haven't read it:

Worse

Some people believe the tripe Priti Patel says AND vote for it.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 14/01/2021 15:00

No one cares about this current lockdown. People meet with entire groups outside, organise parties inside, sleepovers and whathaveyou.
There are countless threads on my local groups about kids birthday parties and sleepovers.

People don't wear masks because they can't be bothered - just claim you are exempt, people just live their normal life but call it "bubbles'

I feel so sorry for the few who genuinely cannot work, have to isolate and are penalised. no one else is bothered. Our local coffee shops are full!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/01/2021 15:01

Everyone she knows has probably told her that to avoid going out in public with her l.

vanillandhoney · 14/01/2021 15:01

She can advise whatever she likes.

Doesn't mean you have to pay her any attention Grin

Well below average
Rabblemum · 14/01/2021 15:04

This is the woman who pointed out there was less shoplifting when all the shops are closed and made up a number, she's an idiot, ignore her.

Confusedandshaken · 14/01/2021 15:05

@Bonkerz

I think it was clear the 2 women who got Starbucks and went outside their county were doing it as a social thing rather than exercise. That's what Patel was condemning this morning. If you go for a jog do it alone in a place that's close to home. No need to drive and no need to stop for coffee first. Sure do it 2m away from someone else but then it's not social it's exercise as you can't have a chat.
Whatever their motivation for the walk, it is now clear that they were legally entitled to do it. The police had either misinterpreted the law or were being heavy handed. The police have apologised and the fines 'quashed' as this link from BBC news shows.

Priti Patel talks out of her arse

Lovelydovey · 14/01/2021 15:07

Right. So both my parents are dying of Covid. The only support I get is seeing my siblings outside for a walk with a mask on and they want to take that away. Fuck that.

I don't recognise this at all. I can't think when I last saw anyone not wearing a mask round here. And I don't know anyone flouting the rules in large groups. And coffee shops can't be full as they can only do takeaway drinks.
murbblurb · 14/01/2021 15:09

do it. 2 metres apart (imagine a tall dead man lying between you, that is 2 metres), paying attention to others (so don't make them pass between you, go single file), speak quietly as shouting spreads it, learn to walk without coffee (I know it is hard) and wear shoes that allow you to walk on the grass.

on that note; are people banned from walking on the grass in Windsor Great Park? There was a really silly picture the other day...

You must be out a hell of a lot to see all of this.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/01/2021 15:10

She's a dipshit though. Repulsive opinions too. How she's in the cabinet I have no idea.

the80sweregreat · 14/01/2021 15:11

She should have seen the two families with children hugging and kissing outside my house today.
I don't know who they were ( I live close to a school) but Ms Patel wouldn't have been impressed seeing them walking along together to their cars!

hmm, I used to enjoy a walk with a friend but we have decided not to anymore. I think if you can possibly not do it, best not? But if you really feel you need to then do it of course
Robbybobtail · 14/01/2021 15:14

Our local coffee shops are full!

Surely only for takeaways? Perfectly fine. Also, unless you are out and about lots yourself, how do you know all this is going on?
