National lockdown needed

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 18:05

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

@chocolatesaltyxmaspudballs

Not for us thanks. Cases in my area are dropping and we have been in tier 3 for months which is bad enough. Should only be applied where needed.
Same here.
kingat · 28/12/2020 18:31

Maybe because not everybody agrees, many people are not following the rules already in tier4, why would they in lockdown.

PrincessNutNuts · 28/12/2020 18:32

@hamstersarse

There is no doubt that there is a spread and rise but I am extremely concerned about the collateral damage that lockdowns inflict, mainly on the poorest in the country.

I think a better strategy would be to keep the tiers but accelerate the vaccination programme exponentially

Having let the virus burn hot at 3000 deaths per week for months, then allowed a nationwide super spreading event on December 25th, and Tier 4 tourists to have a lovely time in nearby Tier 2 areas, the available options are few. Add in a couple of new variants, winter pressure on the NHS, and then send everyone back to work and school and it will be as if the second wave is a tsunami.
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 28/12/2020 18:33

It's not a prospect I would welcome.

But I think it might become necessary

lunar1 · 28/12/2020 18:34

DH and a large group of of his NHS consultant colleagues thing all non essential hospital activities should be stopped and every member of staff able to should be doing a massive vaccine program nation wide. The backlog on clinic appointments for 6-8 weeks would be less than the disruption of continuous sickness and isolation etc.

The current plan is going to take too long even if we get to 1 million a week.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2020 18:35

@BaileyBoos

Agreed. Lock us down, close the schools.
And close the borders.
Beconase20 · 28/12/2020 18:35

Full lockdown definitely. Get the numbers down and gain back some control. Schools shut until this is the case. Kids have missed so much school from isolation that they’re not getting an education anyway. Lower the numbers while rolling out the vaccine and hopefully come summer we will be in a better place. 🙏

This government is so notoriously slow on the uptake about these things though.

They wouldn't know a proactive strategy if it bit them.

Sittinginmyoodie · 28/12/2020 18:37

When cases were through the roof in the North West and Midlands in September (when the new variant was actually discovered) everyone scoffed at the idea of a national lockdown. Perhaps if it had happened then we wouldn't be where we are now?

Now the South East is seeing large numbers again, there are calls for the whole country to go into lockdown.

FWIT, I'm in Wales and the schools will be closed until at least 18th Jan.

PrincessNutNuts · 28/12/2020 18:37

@BaileyBoos

This tier nonsense is a lock of bollocks. It’s not going to work. One last lockdown before the vaccines. It’s the only way.
That's pretty much how I see it.
Thesearmsofmine · 28/12/2020 18:37

I’m dreading it but I think it will have to happen. People don’t give a shit anymore and only a proper enforced lockdown will reduce mixing. I had to go to the supermarket to get some onions yesterday and it was dreadful, i feel very sorry for the staff.

MagicSummer · 28/12/2020 18:37

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I'm so angry at this government for fucking this country up.
It's NOT the Government - it's the stupid people who cannot adhere to the rules because they are 'special'. They are instrumental in causing the huge spike and just wait until the Christmas infections pile in!
Indecisive12 · 28/12/2020 18:37

@lunar1 but there aren’t currently enough vaccine supply? I do think Covid could be spreading due to non-essential health appointments though and sadly I do think schools need to close. But only some areas so not a full lockdown thanks.

PandemicPavolova · 28/12/2020 18:38

Not all gov scientific advisors, Dr jenny harries thinks its fine

Thesearmsofmine · 28/12/2020 18:39

The tiers don’t work, people happily travel between them without thought.

AnguaResurgam · 28/12/2020 18:39

Yes, if we can get transmission low in time for the summer, but a mix of restrictions and vaccination, then we can have a summer like the last one, and if vaccination continues apace, perhaps we will not need reimpositions in autumn.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 18:39

And apparently schools still to open as planned....I really give up.

CoronaIsWatching · 28/12/2020 18:41

Sounds like the new strain is more virulent but less deadly

ilovesooty · 28/12/2020 18:41

But Johnson is stubborn. He promised schools would open and tiers would work. He won't admit he's fucked up.

TheoriginalLEM · 28/12/2020 18:43

@hamstersarse how do you propose THIS government is going to achieve that??

The colatteral damage to mental health and the economy has already happened we need decisive action. We need it now because we WILL end up in full lockdown, its just a question of when!!

I do however share your concerns. I lost my mum just before Christmas and i never got to see her because she was in a carehome. My dd2 is year 11 and her education has been decimated she is developing anxiety about leaving the house.

Im lucky, im one of the many recovering from COVID, i can tell you that recieving that positive result despite feeling as shit as ive ever felt was pure fear. I thought that was it and my dds would lose me as well as their nan

We need full lockdown now.

Another reason is that employers are just not taking it seriously, we had over a third of the workforce go down with this in the space of a werk. We begged for closure, we were told we couldn't have caught it at work as we wear PPE. None of us had fucking been anywhere else. I am expected back before a full recovery and im not the only one. Because the government dont care about us.why should my money grabbing employers

Laughnaff · 28/12/2020 18:44

I think it’s needed, to many people fluffing the rules, supermarkets packed with families like it’s a family outing, just watched my neighbours son 9/10 having a sleepover with two of his friends over 3 nights , then they are in the other neighbours hot tub. I’m pissed off as I couldn’t even have Christmas dinner with my mum and dad as they care for my vulnerable disabled uncle. People are sticking to the rules but some people aren’t giving a shit!

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2020 18:44

@ilovesooty

Nope. Teachers need someone in the media on their side as there are too many people thinking it's just people 'whinging 'etc. schools are not ( or won't be) safe but nobody really believes it unless they work in one.
Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 18:45

Because it would ruin his basking in the glory of that shit Brexit deal.

TotorosFurryBehind · 28/12/2020 18:47

No thanks, we need nursery to stay open.

Wannabangbang · 28/12/2020 18:47

I'm in Tier 4, i think unfortunately everywhere needs full lockdown now and schools need to close for children who's parents are not in work or vunerable. If schools just closed for a month i think that would help keep numbers down tremendously
