National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

EffOrf · 28/12/2020 18:48

Yep, lockdown with closed schools and all children under 18 kept indoors, fed up of kids everywhere, not SD and in shops

Heffle · 28/12/2020 18:48

I think you get one chance to get extraordinary levels of compliance, build up your health service, get plans in place, before all the nudge psychology doesn’t work anymore. What a failure of government to be back in this exact position with closed nightingales 9 months later - but hey, at least you’re all still blaming each other for the most human of behaviour (seeing other humans) 9 whole months, thousands of destitute unemployed people, and 70,000 dead later. How do they get away with it?!

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2020 18:51

People will do what they like because they refuse to believe it's a real thing
I know a few people like this one of which is now in hospital with the virus
It's an impossible situation and I know I would hope schools stayed open if I had young children still , but if they do open people will still do as they like.,
Meanwhile the NHS becomes overwhelmed even more.

MarchSurprise · 28/12/2020 18:51

With taxes due in January, I won't be surprised if they don't wait until Feb to put us in lockdown. A lot of self employed have had to live off their savings they had put aside for tax due to not getting any financial support or very little; the government won't want to give the SE an excuse not to pay their tax bill promptly. They have messed up since March, I can't see them getting it right this time.

RaininSummer · 28/12/2020 18:52

I seem to be living as though locked down anyway so I guess we could all do that and not wait for the government to tell us to.

TheoriginalLEM · 28/12/2020 18:52

Yeah, nurseries must stay open, fuck the nursery workers eh.

Lazypuppy · 28/12/2020 18:52

Cases aren't a bad thing, its the deaths that need to be watched. Does it really matter how many people catch COVID? considering majority recover

Aprilrainbow · 28/12/2020 18:53

@CoronaIsWatching

Sounds like the new strain is more virulent but less deadly
More contagious but less virulent, we have all had to get used to new language this year.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 28/12/2020 18:53

I think they are timing things around the Oxford vaccine. As soon as that is agreed, they can say something like 'closing schools for the big push on vaccination', because then its not all bad news, and has an end in mind.

For impact of more contagious versus more deadly, read this:

Is this a joke?
RandomMess · 28/12/2020 18:56

Trafford Centre has been full to capacity 3 days running SadSadSadSad so the new strain will mean high figures again in the NE in a few weeks time just after they were finally coming right down.

The hospitals up here struggle every winter without this on top.

I cannot believe they are keeping up the reopening schools bollocks. We have the vaccine the end is more in sight low so why screw it up!

MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 18:57

@Frdexu

Absolutely- total lockdown until April or May. No one leaves home unless a key worker- no popping to the shops or going for walks.

Schools should be closed until September. I'd also close supermarkets for 2 weeks and have the army patrolling the streets to keep people indoors.

I cannot tell what is serious and what is a piss take on this forum any more.

We don't know yet.

My park run buddy had a mild case and now she's got a heart condition.

PrincessNutNuts · 28/12/2020 18:58

@MadameBlobby That one is definitely a piss-take.

Jrobhatch29 · 28/12/2020 18:58

Same!!

TroubadorinTrouble · 28/12/2020 18:59

Why act now when he can spend a month taking the piss out of people asking him to do something, panic and then do something half arsed at the last minute?

My son can do his gcse exams from his bedroom, as can the rest of the year 11’s across the country. They can all get top grade 9’s then be downgraded based on their postcode. Something to look forward to Hmm
kingat · 28/12/2020 19:00

@lunar1 but what are non essential health appointments? Noone goes to doctor for fun. Waiting times for most appointments are already too long and what if for me risk from getting covid is tiny and I suffer more from missing my appointment?

The Trafford Centre is in the NW isn’t it?

Also, is that normal capacity or reduced capacity due to the pandemic?

Every time I see people say "we don't want lockdown - our cases are coming right down" I think similarly.

Give it a couple of weeks for Christmas to show up in the figures.

Then add in the more contagious variant that has more effect on children...

Wait a fortnight, then send the kids back to school...

What could go wrong???! Hmm

Wannabangbang · 28/12/2020 19:02

*RandomMess i agree the end is in sight but the government seem intent on killing many people before the end is near. Schools being open is what caused this spread i imagine, my kids got sent home to self isolate over 4 times recently

AKA The Boris Way.

He hates making decisions so much he likes to wait until there's no choice.

DinosaurDildo · 28/12/2020 19:03

Lock us down, close the school’s, the borders etc

These tiers are the biggest load of shite.!!!

They’re NOT WORKING!!!!
