National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

What is a full lockdown? Bear in mind that back in March, we were not allowed to have a support bubble or meet someone in the park. So, sorry but anyone chomping at the bit for that type of lockdown can go and do one. I have not met anyone after that type of lockdown that was living alone.

Remmy123 · 29/12/2020 00:41

40,000 infected = 39,700 with mild flu

I live alone and had to manage without even a support bubble from the end of March until June. If compliance is easier to enforce without support bubble exemption I would have to do my bit and manage again for the time until the vaccination is established. It wouldn't be for ever.

They need to keep support bubbles. It’s hugely cruel to expect people living alone not to see anyone at all. I’m not in the same position but I have a support bubble as I have a baby under one and will be keeping my bubble even if it’s not allowed. Support bubbles were brought in for a reason.
Username198 · 29/12/2020 11:37

@ilovesooty I commend you but there’s no way I can do another lockdown like March to June again without seeing a single other person (who doesn’t work in the supermarket).

I really want the schools to stay open. We are already tier 4 but I would be devastated if kids can’t return to school.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 29/12/2020 11:39

I think many people are very fatigued with it all.

Well we will all be but schools WILL close because of the virus or it can be controlled. Noone wants the virus but it's here. Now the faster spread one is also here. Ignoring it and pretending its not going to have an impact is what the govt are planning. If it were like before, maybe. But it's not.

come the vaccines come the day. We need to get roll out sorted and we need to be really careful before then.
GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 29/12/2020 11:52

Hopefully the vaccine will change everything...

doubleshotespresso · 29/12/2020 12:00

@Horehound

we can't afford to...
We can't afford not to surely!?
Vivana · 29/12/2020 12:02

I agree we need a full lock down not these tiers. There not working at all

MistletoeandGin · 29/12/2020 12:04

Tiers aren’t really being given a chance to work. We’ve been in tier 3 for ages and our numbers are now really low. It has worked.
London should never have been in tier 2 after lockdown.

mumto2teenagers · 29/12/2020 12:05

Agree - full lockdown including closing schools.

Full effort on the rollout of the vaccine so lockdown can be as short as possible.

UghNotThisAgain36 · 29/12/2020 12:07

It doesn't matter what level of lockdown we have. It cannot be enforced and people don't give enough of a shit anyway. The effect of the measures my family unit are sticking to and will continue to stick to so as to reduce tranmission (online shopping only, no contact except DP who lives alone and my DC dad which is allowed, no mixing at all over Christmas) are undone by every other bellend who has 'speshul' reasons to not follow guidelines.

As a few local examples, shops need to go back to single adult shopping, teens, who are apparently the superspreaders, need to be kept indoors (not hanging around in the massive groups of 30+ individuals that we see at the local park), groups of drunks need to be moved on, NT type parks and other outdoor areas closed like the first lockdown and it needs to be enforced properly especially if education is going to suffer. Why should I, and many others, stick to these guidelines when others are refusing?

Enforcement won't happen so the point is moot. Its the vaccination that'll change things as the public is too pig headed to do as they are told.

Idiot - covid isn't a flu!
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/12/2020 12:09

The problem with closing parks is people without gardens will then suffer. I’m lucky, I have a postage stamp sized garden but it’s better than nothing but a lot of people aren’t that lucky

I can see a lockdown announced more or less the same time Oxford vaccine approved. Then the message can be 'light at the end of the tunnel but we need to prevent disaster in January'.

And it was hardly a lockdown when shops, schools and colleges were all open and no travel restrictions.

London shouldn't have been put in tier 2, but that was very much an economic decision.

I think the issue is London and the south just got their second wave a couple of months later than the north did and right in the middle of winter.

Mia1415 · 29/12/2020 12:16

I agree. As much as I hate to say this, I really think we need a proper lockdown, with schools shut as well.

Kazzyhoward · 29/12/2020 12:18

Tiers seem to be working in some places, but not others. Trouble seems to be geographical, i.e. in some places you can easily go to another tier for shopping, pubs, restaurants, etc, due to road network, public transport etc, so the tier system fails due to ease of movement between tiers. In other areas, there are geographic "blockages" such as landscape or lack of motorways/public transport, so there's less movement of people between tiers. So the answer is really the enforcement of tiers - whether you can stop people moving between them.
KipperTheFrog · 29/12/2020 12:20

I don’t see the point of a full lockdown when people can’t follow the rules! I’m in a tier 4 area, only going out to work (key worker) and supermarket or to walk the dog. The roads on my way to work are far busier than they were during lockdown 1. My parents live near the beach, and have seen people meeting multiple households together on the beach to drink champagne and hug on Christmas. I’ve heard many more stories also.
If people followed the rules we might have some chance of managing numbers.

I’d hate schools to be closed, DD1 cannot learn from home. The tantrums over home learning we had in lockdown! We don’t have the resources schools have at home. She’s thrived since being back at school though. If it was zoom school, maybe, but that’s not what our school has put in place.

EmmanuelleMakro · 29/12/2020 12:23

Boris don’t lockdown again. With Brexit done he’ll be going for a recovery New Year not more misery. Hospitals are as leats at capacity at this time of year-in a few weeks when the most at risk of bed clocking are vaccinated news cycle will be bored with Covid and move on.

Timbucktime · 29/12/2020 12:31

Are all those wanting a full lockdown in secure jobs?
