National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

OP posts:

A old colleague's partner had been in hospital since last week and will take ages to recover with lung damage ( late 40s)
No under lying health concerns.
Covid isn't the flu.
It's much worse and has longer effects.
Why are people still peddling this?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/12/2020 12:56

@chocolatesaltyxmaspudballs

Not for us thanks. Cases in my area are dropping and we have been in tier 3 for months which is bad enough. Should only be applied where needed.
This ^^

What is a lockdown going to do if we already have 40,000+ cases a day. Do you think it’s going to magically disappear?

murbblurb · 29/12/2020 13:02

I would love to know if all those talking about 'freedom' and whinging about controls will still think the same if they need medical help at the moment, for any reason.

life is shit at the moment. If you want a chance of life when it will no longer be shit, stay home if you can, stop going bloody shopping and keep your teenagers under control.

Most of Wales has been in lockdown throughout except for a brief spell in August when we allowed to see two other families. Most counties have had harsh restrictions since September (no indoor visits etc) and we've been in a proper lockdown (no essential shops, no outdoor visits, no meeting for walks etc) for a week currently.

We were named the country with the worst case rate in THE WORLD last week. Lockdowns don't work.

They dont work because schools remain open with absolutely no mitigations put in place.
Fortherosesjoni70 · 29/12/2020 13:09

Other countries, the children wear masks and are grouped in smaller numbers. Get real!

ikswobel · 29/12/2020 13:12

@ImAllOut after the first lockdown was eased Wales allowed far bigger bubbles for longer and took longer than every other nation to enforce masks in shops. Wales also has a really low number of hospital beds per head of population and lots of really high density housing and deprivation.

ImAllOut · 29/12/2020 13:40

Welsh bubbles had to be from the same households, whereas England allowed people from 6 different households to meet so not a great deal of difference really. We also opened shops, hospitality cinemas etc later than England. In fact cinemas didn't reopen in any of my neighbouring counties. And yes, we do have a different culture of extended family mixing and deprivation that certainly hasn't helped.

But people are fatigued from the constant restrictions and just don't pay attention here any more. I don't know anyone still adhering to the Senedd's rules, and that includes NHS staff, police officers, teachers etc. Everyone is fed up.

I had a holiday in Wales in September. It wasn't in lockdown, pubs and restaurants were open with proper precautions and the holiday cottage operated under careful hygiene conditions.
paulhollywoodshairgel · 29/12/2020 13:47

No cases in any of the 3 primary schools on my area. I know that's very lucky. But why should those kids education be sacrificed?

ImAllOut · 29/12/2020 13:51

Yes North Wales with its sparse population density wasn't in as strict measures as South Wales, that's why I said most of Wales, as in where most of the population lives. As of mid September South Wales starting locking down again before the full Welsh lockdown at the end of October.

I've looked everywhere and there isn't any plans for a briefing today.
Tomorrow will be about the Brexit vote.
When will anyone make a decision?

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

The problem with closing parks is people without gardens will then suffer. I’m lucky, I have a postage stamp sized garden but it’s better than nothing but a lot of people aren’t that lucky
Closing parks is a terrible idea. Really mn lockdown love going crazy. Low transmission, exercise, good for mh, good for dogs, good for children

Crazy

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2020 17:04

Overall I don’t know if there is appetite for further lock down. We’ll see but wouldn’t be surprised if not or if it was. Who knows

How do you know this?
I found schools kept cases very hush hush.
There were cases at my Dc's schools that I only knew about because I chatted with other parents in different year groups whose children had to isolate or who had received an email about a case - nothing was sent to me that didn't direct affect my child. In the secondary school, I knew about cases through my children's' WhatsApp before hearing anything from school.
