National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

OP posts:
TheGremlinsAreComing · 28/12/2020 19:20

Let's face it the only people screaming for a proper lockdown are those who can afford it.

RaspberryCoulis · 28/12/2020 19:21

Another idea, @IcedPurple. Everyone issued with a badge like they have in McDonalds with room for 5 stars.

Every blatant flagrant flouter you report, you get a star. Once you've got 5 stars, you become an official Covid Monitor. There could be a uniform! Brown shirts, maybe?

kingat · 28/12/2020 19:22

Agree @icedpurple, cant believe people want army on the streets. Maybe also the little vans to just take the supermarket offenders to a place with no return right there on the spot.

Easy to want lockdown if you sit at home watching netflix all day on fourlough or can wfh without little children to look after. Its easy if catching covid is the only thing that scares you,not so much if you worry about other things just more

Most schools have been closed for 10days and longer now, are they really the source of todays numbers???

Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 19:22

Sorry - but I think we should stop pretending that we can do anything to reduce the spread of this virus.

We've tried now. We were too late to start with.

It just has to do it's own thing now. And we have to pay the consequences of having allowed a shit arse lazy government to take control of our country.

They've messed it up. There's nothing we can do now. Lockdowns most certainly (at this last stage) do not work.

Lepetitpiggy · 28/12/2020 19:23

@480Widdio

No to the lockdowns! They do not work against a virus,Bloody ludicrous.
Genuinely, though, what does then?

Apart from a vaccine of course

Brown shirts would work.

How about we equip 'Covid marshalls' with those electrocuting sticks Aunt Lydia used on handmaids who didn't know their place? So if, say, you pick up a 'non-essential' item like deoderant or a bar of Dark Milk, prepare to be zapped.

StylishMummy · 28/12/2020 19:24

@catgirl1976 why?

Life CANNOT be put on hold for a year for something that kills less than 1% of people it infects. I'm CEV, I was shielding until July, absolutely terrified. I then decided to educate myself reading every bit of peer reviewed medical information available on covid-19. The overreaction to this illness is so far beyond my comprehension that I have found myself reading every thread in this topic to understand why people are so terrified.

My DC will continue to see their grandparents, go to the park and meet up with friends (as parents we stand apart), but why on earth are you all crowing for a lockdown when the worst hit are those with no room to fall.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2020 19:26

@StylishMummy

You can call a lockdown, neither me, my extended family, or friends would stick to it. Why the hell should we when this virus is going to kill more people from the economic fallout than the illness itself? I genuinely don't know anyone who's kept to the rules in recent months and not one of them has had covid
There are always going to be people who don't give a flying fuck about social responsibility I suppose.
ballsdeep · 28/12/2020 19:26

@PrincessNutNuts

At current rates we'll hit 100,000 covid deaths in about 9 weeks.

The nightmare of course is if it's by the end of January because we have another month like April where over a thousand people die most days. Sad

I'm absolutely dreading it.

Remember when the US hit 100k and everyone was aghast.
Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 19:27

Nothing. Not at this late stage. I know it's a lot to take in. I'm sure our government realise this now. They're still pretending that they're in control. But as Matt Hancock said the other day - the virus is actually now out of control.

People need to wake up to this now and stop the denial. There is nothing we can do. We have to let it run.

I've replied to quite a few of these accusations. I WFH in a secure job. I have no young kids I would have to home school. Yes, I realise I'm very lucky - I can afford another lockdown. But I'm not so short sighted that I can't see beyond the end of my own nose, and I absolutely do not want another lockdown.
RaspberryCoulis · 28/12/2020 19:29

We have to let it run.

And have a shit hot plan to vaccinate as many vulnerable people as quickly as possible.

Rest of us get on with it. If you wish to stay cowered in your house, only venturing out for essentials, crack on. Nothing stopping you.

Inkpaperstars · 28/12/2020 19:30

I agree that another national lockdown is needed. I hate to say it. And schools need to close.

madroid · 28/12/2020 19:32

@StylishMummy Everyone I know has kept to the rules but them I'm in the NE and numbers were very high in the autumn. I know over 12 people who've had covid. 2 are dead. 3 have long term health problems, is so bad they have had to be helped at home.

If you're happy to see people being turned away from hospitals and left to die and essential services like electricity stopping because so many workers are ill and they can't maintain the supply, then hell yeah, let's carry on spreading baby!

FFS try thinking it through.

Kazzyhoward · 28/12/2020 19:33

If it's let to run without control, the hospitals WILL be full. What happens then about people having strokes, heart attacks, car accidents, etc? There's no ambulances to pick them up, A&E is already full, wards are full. So, the death rate amongst people without Covid will rise. Is that really what people want??

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 28/12/2020 19:33

I was recently called evil for saying the same Elephant I agree with you.

I'm not saying feed all vulnerable and elderly to the wolves but we can not stop this. Trying to slow it down barely works, full lockdown army on streets etc is just ridiculous and the economy might be trashed but there are still people out there clinging on to their jobs/houses/mental health, in the same way I wouldnt want to throw CV people under the bus, I dont want to throw those suffering from a trashed economy under one either so I wouldnt support another lockdown.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2020 19:33

There's a lot stopping people from staying at home if they're in job roles that can't be done from home.
Kazzyhoward · 28/12/2020 19:36

We need a proper national lockdown and it needs to start before New Year's Eve. None of this tiers/local restriction nonsense - it's too late for that. Schools don't re-open. Non essential shops/takeaways to close (no excuses or loopholes). No air travel for anything other than essential travel. Proper Govt support for self employed, isolating, etc so people can actually stay at home if they have symptoms etc. Now is the time to take it seriously. All we need is to get the rates down again, alongside the vaccination program, and we could really be back in control by Easter.

laudemio · 28/12/2020 19:36

Covid kills less than 1% of people ot infects with adequate medical care. If too many people get infected at the same time some people won't be able access medical care and the percentage of deaths will rise. Also more people will die of non covid disease or accidents.
In order to vaccinate lots of people we need trained staff. Many of these people work in hospitals. They won't be able vaccinate people if they have to care for the covid sick instead. And they won't be able to vaccinate people if they get covid themselves.

So it is very important to reduce the infection rate.

Katie517 · 28/12/2020 19:36

Cases are high today because of reporting backlogs over the Xmas period, if you look at cases by specimen date rather than reported date it’s not such a significant jump but then again that won’t fuel the lockdown loving headlines will it. Let’s face it if they put the whole country into tier 4 there is no where else they can go than closing schools, faffing about closing garden centres or putting restrictions on exercise or banning meeting 1 person outdoors will do absolutely nothing while ever secondary schools are still open. I will not be taking notice of any further restrictions above tier 4 if they keep schools open. Meeting a friend outside for a walk or a run kept me sane in the November lockdown it would be inhumane to take that away and to be frank people just won’t take any notice.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 28/12/2020 19:37

Targeting specific hotspot areas and controlling things there is a better plan. You would have to have better systems in place though (which we will never have) trying to minimise the strain on the NHS. Ensuring people can still work if the risk is low.

The tier shite could have been a great plan. Shame like everything else it's gone tits up.

Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 19:38

No.

Of course it's not what we want.

But we have no choice now. Our government has left this too late. The virus is out of control.

Did you hear Matt Hancock say this the other day? Our shit hot government knows this. There is nothing that can now be done.

This is about acceptance. It's not a good thing. It is not a choice.

None of want this.

Not true at all. I think there should be a lockdown and we can’t afford it !
