National lockdown needed

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 18:05

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

@Lazypuppy

Cases aren't a bad thing, its the deaths that need to be watched. Does it really matter how many people catch COVID? considering majority recover
Except more cases = more hospital admissions and then the hospitals are full and then we all run the risk of dying of anything
TheGremlinsAreComing · 28/12/2020 19:05

No thanks. Our cases are dropping and we've been tier 3 forever now. Just fully lockdown those areas that need it and let the rest of us get on with our lives.

If the borders to the country aren't closed then it's all pointless anyway.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 19:05

@TheoriginalLEM I agree fuck the staff as long as your child can go and play with their friends=to get out of my way.

We're in a low risk area, but I said to DH earlier I thought the best thing to do was lockdown. Not being dramatic and I wouldn't relish it, but we can't let this thing get out of control. Being positive better to do it now, in the hope that a combination of reducing numbers and vaccination will get us through this earlier. On a negative thought, we're not sure how these variants will push numbers up, so better to try and get some control now.

Wannabangbang · 28/12/2020 19:06

Exactly this Tier BS isn't working it never has as whats to stop some moron traveling from tier 4 to tier 1,the police can't police everyone and i should imagine a lot of people have done this over Christmas. Road blocks, close airports the lot or i can't see this ending any time soon

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 19:07

Your child missing a few weeks of nursery will not hinder their life long development but it might save a member of staff from getting seriously ill.

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I'm so angry at this government for fucking this country up.
Yes, so am I. With the never ending lockdown hokey-cokey, you're in, you're out, you're open, you're shut.

Glad to see though that the Dementors are back to their full March force with their shrieks for a PROPER lockdown, preferably enforced by the Army.

Because that worked out SO well for Spain/Italy, didn't it? Hmm

Nc135 · 28/12/2020 19:07

Because even with a national lockdown people are still seeing vulnerable relatives and support bubbles for mental health and support issues. Not saying that is right or wrong - everyone has their reasons - but a national lockdown will make zero difference.

Dusty9729 · 28/12/2020 19:07

Lockdowns do work but only in the short term and they aren’t a solution! How many times can we lockdown, reduce cases, come out of lockdown, cases go up.. over and over again. I totally agree it stops the nhs becoming too overwhelmed and to protect the vulnerable but can we keep doing it? A lockdown doesn’t bother me at all. I’m unsociable and it doesn’t change much for me though. Not against it just fed up of going around in circles!

IcedPurple · 28/12/2020 19:08

@Frdexu

Absolutely- total lockdown until April or May. No one leaves home unless a key worker- no popping to the shops or going for walks.

Schools should be closed until September. I'd also close supermarkets for 2 weeks and have the army patrolling the streets to keep people indoors.

I think everyone should also have electronic tags attached to their ankles in case they venture out of the house more often than the weekly trip to buy bread and gruel. Neighbours should also be financially rewarded for reporting non-essential trips or house guests. Sites like MN should be monitored by the authorities and those challenging lockdown will be identified by their IP address and could face imprisonment. During lessons (online obviously) children should be encouraged to report their rool breaking parents.

Everyone can indulge their inner Stasi agent. It'll be great.

LemonTT · 28/12/2020 19:08

I wish the people saying no thanks would look at the acceleration of infections and forget about north south politics.

Areas with falling a low case rates at the end of November are now seeing cases 8-10 time’s higher. The hospitals are filling up. And that’s in London which has a better supply of beds and hospitals than most other parts of the country. Most of UK won’t be able to cope with this surge.

The NHS is being put under immense pressure and cannot cope with an unprecedented surge and the need to vaccinate 40m people twice.

Without an ease in the pressure the light at the end of the tunnel gets dimmer and more distant. We should aim to make it brighter and closer.

If not a lockdown so the vaccination programme can be done and lives saved then what? We live like this till the Autumn rather than getting ahead of it in the spring.

This isn’t even rocket science anymore.

RandomMess · 28/12/2020 19:09

I get they are desperately trying to save the tanked economy but how is anyone going to feel if their love one dies of anything because their nearest hospitals are just too full/no appropriate beds/equipment available.

I really think if schools reopen that is going to be the reality.

It's like the government ignore that the children take it home and their parents then get it!!

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2020 19:10

I feel for the key workers and everyone else who can't wfh.
It's a horrible impossible situation and one the government won't deal with until the stuff has hit the fan in a really big way.
I'm can see why they don't want to shut up everything again , but what is the alternative if people won't stick to the guidelines?

StylishMummy · 28/12/2020 19:12

You can call a lockdown, neither me, my extended family, or friends would stick to it. Why the hell should we when this virus is going to kill more people from the economic fallout than the illness itself? I genuinely don't know anyone who's kept to the rules in recent months and not one of them has had covid

BigBadVoodooHat · 28/12/2020 19:13

I cannot tell what is serious and what is a piss take on this forum any more.

Neither can I Confused

I'd also close supermarkets for 2 weeks

^ Especially this one. Is this serious? Some people live hand to mouth. Not everyone has the money or the transportation to stock up on enough food for their family for two weeks.

I know there’s a sizeable proportion of tone-deaf MN-ers who cannot grasp the extremely challenging circumstances some people exist within, but I bloody hope this was an attempt at satire.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 19:13

To late the economic fall out is already here.

Agree @icedpurple, cant believe people want army on the streets, why dont you move to North Korea.

Most schools have been closed for 10days and longer now, are they really the source of todays numbers???

Agree that it's hard to tell the difference between piss-take and 'serious' post these days, but amazingly enough I'm guessing it was the latter.

Was that a serious post? Words fail me.
catgirl1976 · 28/12/2020 19:16

StylishMummy demonstrating perfectly why a full, properly enforced lock down is needed due to the breathtaking selfishness and stupidity of her, her extended family and everyone she knows.

RaspberryCoulis · 28/12/2020 19:16

I think everyone should also have electronic tags attached to their ankles in case they venture out of the house more often than the weekly trip to buy bread and gruel.

Oooh oooh can I play? What about electronic tags fitted with EXPLOSIVES which detonate if you are either outside more than an hour or stray more than a set distance from the house? That'd sort out the blatantly flagrant flouters.

480Widdio · 28/12/2020 19:17

No to the lockdowns! They do not work against a virus,Bloody ludicrous.

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 28/12/2020 19:18

Most of the country is already in a lockdown, that's what tier 4 is.

Now that sounds like a proper lockdown!

The flouting flouters who flout should be afraid. Very afraid.
