Isn't it?

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/18/boris-johnson-calls-crisis-meeting-to-discuss-response-to-new-covid-strain

They're panicking now.

I think it should be.

drinkinginamanger · 18/12/2020 23:39

It has been. While you've allowed to do it, you've been told not to. They won't make it law as they need the votes

OhDear2200 · 18/12/2020 23:39

I hope so

friendlycat · 18/12/2020 23:39

It’s in a few newspapers now. We will see tomorrow I suppose.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 18/12/2020 23:46

Ah have just started a thread about this..... apologies for duplicating but I'm quite WTAF right now......

CantSayJack · 18/12/2020 23:47

Christmas isn’t cancelled though is it.
People can still celebrate, just keep to your own households or pay the price in January. Quite simple really.

swg1 · 18/12/2020 23:49

The moment they let it leak they guaranteed cars are going to be on the motorway tomorrow trying to leave the South East before restrictions come in.

Velvian · 18/12/2020 23:49

I bloody hope so tbh. Too hard to try to fit in with the rules, without offending anyone, when the whole thing seems wrong anyway

housemdwaswrong · 18/12/2020 23:51

Hope not. We've been isolating for a fortnight to meet. Far riskier to be in supermarket or gp surgery then in ours on Christmas day.

Elephant4 · 18/12/2020 23:57

They're talking about restricting travel. There's an emergency meeting tomorrow to tighten/bring in travel restrictions.

I'm not bothered either way. My dad will be though. But people will have to know soon. I think there's likely to be a mad panic in supermarkets.

And what about those who've prepared to have family over and bought their shopping already?

OP posts:
chipsandgin · 18/12/2020 23:57

I hope so. The whole idea was utterly batshit in the first place.

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 00:00

Oh god - I get that it might be needed but we’ve isolated for two weeks and have presents spread across the households and food order ditto. Would be sad not to see elderly family and one set of people will end up with just huge turkey but no stuffing, veg or wine etc etc

orangecinnamon · 19/12/2020 00:06

Yes this !
Mousehole10 · 19/12/2020 00:07

Too late now. We’ll be travelling to family regardless

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 19/12/2020 00:08

I wish they would just call it Xmas Sad

helloxhristmas · 19/12/2020 00:10

Anyone with an ounce of sense would have seen this coming.

Mousehole10 · 19/12/2020 00:11

@Thedarknightsaredrawingin

I wish they would just call it Xmas Sad
They did, they had opportunity to cancel it this week and they didn’t. Too late for them to do it now no one will comply.
mstumble · 19/12/2020 00:11

Yep I wish they'd cancel. Its too risky and feels wrong. My hubby thinks its fine and I'm so sick of being the bad guy.

IdblowJonSnow · 19/12/2020 00:12

I wish they'd cancel it too. Just not worth it for the majority. I realise that there are exceptions and they should crack on.

I'd like to cancel our plans but would be extremely unpopular...

RosesAndHellebores · 19/12/2020 00:12

People have to take individual responsibility and call it themselves. It will just be the four of us this Christmas.

MercyBooth · 19/12/2020 00:12

Im going to my mums. Its a half hour walk so local. If they try and stop me from doing this i wont comply with a Jan lockdown. And i will also expect all non essential flights to stop.

And i will bump the Eid threads and tag in everyone who swore blind they wouldnt do this at Christmas.

ChristmasCookies · 19/12/2020 00:13

They can cancel other religious festivals the night before and expect those people to abide by the ‘rules’

But this ‘religious’ festival they cant cancel....
Bullocks!!!!

Superstardjs · 19/12/2020 00:16

I find this hyperbole irritating. Christmas is not cancelled. Christmas Day is on the 25th December, the same as every year. They cannot cancel Christmas. Your plans may be curtailed somewhat, but Christmas itself really is not cancelled as a general premise.

Dannn · 19/12/2020 00:17

I hope whatever they decide it gets announced tomorrow. It’s too late to expect everyone to comply but some people will.

HeddaGarbled · 19/12/2020 00:17

People won’t comply and it’s not policeable.
