MmeD · 31/10/2020 16:02

I’m so anxious the idea of a good horror film seems appealingly calming.

Siw2020 · 31/10/2020 16:03

what channel / time?

ShellsAndSunrises · 31/10/2020 16:03

I just read the Peston thing...

Does anyone have any educated guesses what happens if you’re already abroad? I’m due to be away until the 22nd November. Flight home is booked but I’m guessing won’t go if people can’t fly out... bit worried.

Ironically where I am has really low Covid levels, so I’m probably safer here Confused but it’s not cheap; and I imagine flight costs will soar...

islockdownoveryet · 31/10/2020 16:03

@Splodgetastic

I’m afraid I don’t support another lockdown unless they do it fairly. I don’t see why my local high street florist / gift shop should have to close but supermarkets and large online retailers stay open. They could shut absolutely everything if they hadn’t cut the armed forces so much - they might have been able to get basic rations to everyone.
What why do we need to live on basic rations ?
titchy · 31/10/2020 16:04

@NorthGirl2

I'm pretty sure the leaks to the press are intentional. All the major national cooperations have inside sources and the press has managed to 'leak' every lockdown before its announced. It's probably to gauge public reaction before the confirmation.
Correct. It's how politics is diner these days.
Nostrings457 · 31/10/2020 16:04

Why did it change from 4pm to 5pm?

Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 16:04

@ivftake1Yes, obviously, but why should supermarkets and online retailers be allowed to sell flowers and gifts? Just shut everything down completely if it’s to be fair.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:05

@kirinm

Peston is saying it's going to be Tier 4. Schools, colleges, unis open. Non essential shops closed, restaurants / pubs close. Outward travel banned, travel within UK for work purposes only.

Even now they're going via fucking journalists. Heaven forbid one of them manages to keep their mouths shut and announces it themselves rather than a journalist mouthpiece.

Sounds about right.... No outbound travel... So basically protecting the conservative voting shires by keeping out people from the towns and cities (by the nature of high density population)...People travelling in (to infect and spread) but residents are not allowed to leave....

Wonderfully cohesive national policy. So effective too. What with the airports open as normal with no proper restrictions.

Pointless. Lockdowns are tough on people. They're worth doing - but only if it's going to worthwhile. Look to Melbourne for a How To guide.

Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 16:06

After all this is finished you’ll be lucky to be eating flower bulbs, like the Dutch at the end of the war. We shouldn’t be locking down to save Christmas either. No one saved Eid or Rosh Hashanah, did they?

Chickenandrice · 31/10/2020 16:07

The rate of infection in secondary school age group is so alarming the way it is increasing.

NRJ688 · 31/10/2020 16:08

So if non essential retail is told to close is furlough coming back or what?

user127819 · 31/10/2020 16:08

@Nostrings457

Why did it change from 4pm to 5pm?
The press conference is now expected at 5pm.
FreshfieldsGal · 31/10/2020 16:09

Surely secondary schools should now switch to online learning?

ivftake1 · 31/10/2020 16:09
@ivftake1Yes, obviously, but why should supermarkets and online retailers be allowed to sell flowers and gifts? Just shut everything down completely if it’s to be fair.
Because it's completely unreasonable for a government to tick and cross every supermarkets inventory! Imagine how long that would take

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:10

Rule number one - taken from Melbourne's Lockdowns For Dummies guide (let's hope somebody buys a copy for Boris as a Christmas pressie)....

...Key to a successful lockdown, i.e. one designed to properly contain. Don't give people much notice.

Rule number two: Do it properly. Which means non essential travel includes restricted international borders.

Melbourne is a city, England is a country
Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 16:11

@ivftake1 So just shut everything down completely instead and get Army to deliver emergency supplies to anyone who is too weak to survive four weeks without food. Most people in this country have enough reserves in their bodies.

Ickabog · 31/10/2020 16:12

@FreshfieldsGal

They introduced a tiered education system which meant this would happen in areas of lockdown. However, they seem to have forgotten about this, and now the plan is send everyone in like normal and pretend it will all be ok...
covetingthepreciousthings · 31/10/2020 16:13

This is what I'm worried about, I'm already on minimum wage and very concerned incase it doesn't and employers can't afford to pay wages. Sad

That's it, you've lost it

And what will you put in my basic rations? Are you ensuring it's personalised?
SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:14

For those who still think it's 'only the elderly'. The youngest death yesterday was a 26 year old. Lots of under 65s in hospital with it. Fast forward a few weeks of continued no lockdown ...lots of young deaths...due to no more room at the inn aka the hospital. No staff left to care for you in hospital (Non Covid or Covid care). No school staff either. They'll be off sick with Covid, Long Covid, or PTSD. Or dead.
