BBC breaking news that a month's lockdown is to be announced - 'sources' have told the BBC.

CovidClara · 31/10/2020 16:15

@NRJ688

So if non essential retail is told to close is furlough coming back or what?
The revised job support scheme is worth about the same as the current 60% furlough. It has provision for when businesses are totally closed.
SleepingStandingUp · 31/10/2020 16:16
@ivftake1 So just shut everything down completely instead and get Army to deliver emergency supplies to anyone who is too weak to survive four weeks without food. Most people in this country have enough reserves in their bodies.
Oh I rescind my last question, you're obviously joking or high on crack.

Ohthatsgreat · 31/10/2020 16:16

Wow. What a low point we have reached when there is people advocating starvation and rations to ‘control’ the virus.

This is what I'm worried about, I'm already on minimum wage and very concerned incase it doesn't and employers can't afford to pay wages. Sad

It's a new job support scheme starting in November basically you'll get 2/3 of your wage . I've got a letter from my employer already .

this has just come up on the BBC, joy of all joys.

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 31/10/2020 16:18

Schools won't close.

ShinyGreenElephant · 31/10/2020 16:18

@JacobReesMogadishu so sorry for your loss Flowers

@Emmie12345 thats great to hear, could you come to the covid ward I'm sitting on and let my gran know she can pop the oxygen mask off as shes only got a cold?

islockdownoveryet · 31/10/2020 16:18

@Splodgetastic

After all this is finished you’ll be lucky to be eating flower bulbs, like the Dutch at the end of the war. We shouldn’t be locking down to save Christmas either. No one saved Eid or Rosh Hashanah, did they?
Aren't you a cheery sole Hmm

Apparently it's tier 4 lockdown for England for a few weeks and then different areas downgraded to the other tiers after that depending on where they're at.

The problem is, keeping all the schools and Unis open won't make enough of a difference, so when we come out of tier 4, it's back to tier 3 for those of us in it.

Teenageromance · 31/10/2020 16:21

Change of time was probably so didn’t clash with rugby

NRJ688 · 31/10/2020 16:21

My understanding of the new job support scheme was that you unlike furlough had to actually work hours, can’t do that if it’s closed or had it changed?

islockdownoveryet · 31/10/2020 16:22

Wtf is Boris doing leaking all this before his conference.
crazyfrogs · 31/10/2020 16:24

@SheepandCow

Rule number one - taken from Melbourne's Lockdowns For Dummies guide (let's hope somebody buys a copy for Boris as a Christmas pressie)....

...Key to a successful lockdown, i.e. one designed to properly contain. Don't give people much notice.

Rule number two: Do it properly. Which means non essential travel includes restricted international borders.

and restricted state borders, they couldn't travel to other states. Maybe lockdown here should be county level except for essential journeys to work, I live in one county and work in the next (admittedly only 10 minutes down the road though).
Fridgeandkitchen · 31/10/2020 16:25

It seems to be for England only if reports are to be believed.

WitchesSpelleas · 31/10/2020 16:25

They might as well cancel the conference because everything's now been leaked anyway.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:25

Separate from schools and universities is the issue of unrestricted borders.

As the very wise scientific expert, Professor Devi Sridhar says (my bold):

On 22 June- given we had largely crushed the curve- we could have maintained this through expanded testing & tracing and strict checks for re-importation of cases. That was the time to push numbers low & have a strategy of how to maintain them.

And

Oh - to be an island in 2020.

Lockdowns work. Just the one (no need for repeated cycles). But only if you keep restricted borders for a while after lockdown. Obviously also as she says we need a working test, track, trace system.

crazyfrogs · 31/10/2020 16:26

So just shut everything down completely instead and get Army to deliver emergency supplies to anyone who is too weak to survive four weeks without food. Most people in this country have enough reserves in their bodies.

and then leave the NHS to pick up the pieces? I hope you were being ridiculous rather than stupid.

Parker231 · 31/10/2020 16:27

There are two new job support schemes - the closed scheme for those businesses which have to close and the open scheme for those businesses who can open but not fully.

BlueBrian · 31/10/2020 16:29

@PutThemInTheIronMaiden

Schools won't close.
Be a complete waste of time having a lockdown then, schools will probably be closed within a week or two, staff won't be turning up soon anyway.
MrsGrindah · 31/10/2020 16:29

@islockdownoveryet It could be anybody leaking it...he has a huge team across government working on this. Doubt it’s him personally

amitoooldforthisshit · 31/10/2020 16:30

my guess is the lockdown will be the same as northern Ireland schools, pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, spas, and the like all close for a month other shops and businesses will stay open

RichardMarxisinnocent · 31/10/2020 16:30

One of Robert Peston's tweets says "6) Overnight stays away from home will be allowed only for work purposes.."
What does that mean for support bubbles? Can I still stay overnight at my DP's home as we are a support bubble, therefore the same as one household?

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 16:30

There are loads of acorns around this year - we can eat those (and make acorn coffee)
