Sooner than expected! Wondering what he will say...

OP posts:
Chickenandrice · 31/10/2020 19:52

Hairdressers?

user34254356 · 31/10/2020 19:53

Is international travel banned? I was planning to book for December but not sure what to do !

LH1987 · 31/10/2020 19:53

Do restrictions start midnight Wednesday or Thursday? TIA

Dustballs · 31/10/2020 19:53

Are hairdressers essential?

What other than food is essential?

lyralalala · 31/10/2020 19:54

@SheepandCow But.... Borders. Why put shut pubs, restaurants, and bars, putting livelihoods at risk - but not ban non essential international travel?

Have they not? One of the reportings of it as that outbound international travel would be banned except for work purposes

ScatteredMama82 · 31/10/2020 19:55

@Dustballs

This is going to last much longer than a month , with schools etc being left open.

Does anyone else feel like crying?

Yes 😢
RichardMarxisinnocent · 31/10/2020 19:56

@Dustballs

Off the top of my head, toiletries, sanpro, medication, washing powder, lightbulbs, items to fix things around the home, probably a fair few other things.
EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 31/10/2020 19:57

Seems pointless if ALL school years are open. That's not a full lockdown. It will still be spread through schools?
I can understand certain years still being open but across the board, why?
Do I still send my little girl to nursery?

Usernamealreadyexists · 31/10/2020 19:57

@Dustballs yes, very much so.

olderthanyouthink · 31/10/2020 19:58

@MushMonster thanks. In theory I should be in demand but I have a weird childcare schedule (which worked fine at my last job where I went PT) and I'm kinda stuck with it for a while.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 20:02

@lyralalala
Really?? Perhaps they've finally listened to experts like Professor Sridhar.

Work trips? What will that include?

Ideally it should be restricted to food and medical imports, military, and emergency compassionate travel. That's it. With strict checks and quarantine where necessary.

Still, definitely a step in the right direction.
Sort out the test, track, and trace and perhaps we can finally start to feel more hopeful.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/10/2020 20:05

Not a chance on the track and trace I'm afraid - not with Dido running it
Still, this serial failure's got the "cherry on her cake" which Hancock promised, so I suppose that's all that matters

RainbowPuzzle · 31/10/2020 20:07

So are we going to see similar scenes to Wales then? Babies and childrens winter coats etc all wrapped up in shrink wrap and the isles blocked off so you can't buy them.

AdultHumanFemale · 31/10/2020 20:09

Oh dear. "Schools will stay open" will only work as long as nobody tests positive and bubbles close. A bubble at our school is closing again straight after coming out of its first isolation period, as there is another positive case. "Schools will stay open" will mean FA to the parents of the 30 pupils in that bubble, who will need to stay home to look after DC. Rinse and repeat, all over the country.
Don't get me wrong, I am a teacher and would MUCH rather be in school teaching my class than preside over the car crash of inequality which is access to online learning. I'm just saying "Don't get your hopes up..."

ladybee28 · 31/10/2020 20:09

So international travel is OK?

Online?

What will happen is worried parents will start to remove their children, and that is their choice. Also enough bubbles will have to isolate, and staff taken sick that head teachers will end up having to close the schools. That way Johnson can sit there and say ‘we tried to keep the schools open but you lot fucked it up didn’t you’.
DuncinToffee · 31/10/2020 20:12

ladybee28 according to Peston, international travel will be banned except for work purposes. Haven't seen it confirmed yet

Peston and one of the others on Twitter (I've forgotten who sorry) said it so they must have go it from somewhere

I expect we'll find out for sure when the likes of Jet2 and Tui make flight announcements

ladybee28 · 31/10/2020 20:22

@DuncinToffee yes, you're right.... (screenshot from the Independent).

Bollocks. Was THIS close to finally seeing my family again.

Be glad you’re not in France. In their lockdown they need a permission form - either in paper version or on mobile phone - to leave their homes. You have to tick the form to explain your reason for being outside.

These cover essential trips such as grocery shopping, exercising, visiting a doctor or for imperative family reasons.

Those who are stopped by police and don't have a form or are judged by the police to be flouting the rules risk a fine of €135 that could rise to €375. Those who are caught flouting the rules three times in 30 days fave a fine of €3,750.

MushMonster · 31/10/2020 20:29

Regarding non-essentials, I bet you it will be like Wales. So you can buy them in shops that sell food and similar (supermarkets, B&M, HomeBargains and so on....) IF you are stuck in a bad situation. Otherwise, on-line, not in the shop.
When I went shopping last weekend, they had items covered in plastic. But today, we went to the shops again, and the plastics had been removed. There were signs saying: please buy only essential items.
At least, you had the welsh example, and hopefully it will all be smooth and less dramatic for you all in England than it was initially here. At least, you got more notice than we did for the non-essentials. And also, you have passed the pay day regarding the shopping. But I do think that making one of the weeks of the lockdown coincide with half term is a good option indeed.
I bet you all that if we have any further lockdowns, they will coincide with half terms and school holidays.

AdultHumanFemale · 31/10/2020 20:30

Stanford, that's what I mean, it is so cynical. Lots of people breathing a sigh of relief at the promise of open schools, but it won't last, yet BJ will be able to say they tried.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 20:30

Thanks lyralalala. I missed that.

Parker231
The French approach is probably better. Longer-term.

I wonder whether it's been motivated in part by the awful terrorist attacks? Protecting the people from Covid and from terror?
