@islockdownoveryet It could be anybody leaking it...he has a huge team across government working on this. Doubt it’s him personally
I didn't actually think he was the one on the phone to the bbc .
He's in charge isn't he so he's responsible.
I just don't think it's on .

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:33

@crazyfrogs
The states in Australia would be more comparable to Wales, England, Scotland, and NI, rather than our different counties.

Each state protected the whole of their population, not just their rural residents.

One proper lockdown - with restricted international borders continuing after lockdown would ensure parity between our regions wrt protection and level of risk (of spreading it elsewhere).

It would be very wrong (and possibly irreparably divisive) to protect only some parts of the country - for example, by keeping international borders unrestricted therefore risking urban residents...and then internally restricting those urban residents.

Better to protect all via our national borders.

Aragog · 31/10/2020 16:35

It might just result in some decent safety measures being introduced.

I wouldn't hold your breathe!
Schools only contain children and young healthy adults if you read most media and MN threads, so need need to worry apparently.

ShellsAndSunrises · 31/10/2020 16:35

I just don't think it's on

To be fair, I prefer it. It's better than constantly waiting around for ever-moving press conferences, it gives you an idea of what to expect.

I don't think they should govern like they do, but if they're going to be awful, at least it gives people a bit of a heads up. I don't think my anxiety could take it otherwise.

Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 16:36

@cologne4711 Acorns are not 100% edible, especially if you don’t do something to them, although I can’t remember what it is.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 16:37

To think how much cheaper it would've been to have provided a financial support package to the airline and travel industry. Much better than the billions spent on furlough (including all the money wasted on fraud), EOTHO, and our world beatingly incompent test, track, and trace.

sallyedmondson · 31/10/2020 16:38

2nd time round and yet again he hasn't done it in time. 2 week circuit breaker 2 weeks ago was advised by his health advisers. Why does he not listen.

HotToCold · 31/10/2020 16:38

Tier 4 .... Lockdown for 4 weeks...

Because people still cant listen!!!!!!

Enoughnowstop · 31/10/2020 16:39

Schools won't close

Maybe not today but I’d put money on a pre-recorded message going out on Wednesday night closing them too.

Aragog · 31/10/2020 16:40

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

So ridiculous to expect young people to put their lives on hold .my dp son has it at mo and it’s literally just a sodding cold

🙄

Not for me it hasn't been.

I was admitted into hospital with dangerously high blood pressure issues, along side a rapid heart rate, tight chest and laboured breathing. If not identified the blood pressure issues could have led to a stroke, heart attack etc.

Although clinically vulnerable due to inflammatory arthritis and the related medication, before covid I didn't have any blood pressure issues. I am likely to be on medication ongoing for it now, and it its just one extra thing to add to my vulnerability if immunity wanes. I will be away from work (school) for at least a month, maybe longer depending on what the GP decides at my follow up next week.

I'm 47y and my arthritis/medication is not the type of 'underlying condition' which would lead to an early death in normal situations.

Splodgetastic · 31/10/2020 16:40

I am certainly not advocating starvation. I just think the closure of retail needs to be fair. There won’t be an economy to support this BS for much longer.

HotToCold · 31/10/2020 16:40

It will be the same as the places that were Tier 3...
Your be paid 2/3 of your wages

I've been really cautious throughout this pandemic, but I don't see why non essential shops have to shut, if that's what they do.

We keep in person shopping to a minimum and mainly use online, but the few times I've been in a physical shop it feels relatively safe. In our area everyone seems to wear a mask and I can largely stay a distance from others even if they aren't respecting the rules. Our daughter has just started the job she should have started before lock down. It's in a non essential shop and it's going to be so hard for her financially and mentally if it has to close.

By far our biggest risks come from being in a bubble with our daughter and primary school aged grandchildren. I'm desperate for them to keep schools open, but not at the expense of teachers health and lives or a raging pandemic.

HotToCold · 31/10/2020 16:44

Schools and Uni’s 100% not closing

.........

For your son maybe!
For thousands of others it isnt !!!!!!

Beebityboo · 31/10/2020 16:47

They could at least remove the threats of fines and prosecution for parents who aren't comfortable sending their children in right now. Absolute disgrace.

Sooner than expected! Wondering what he will say...*

That's why they've put it back an hour. So they can gather more feedback from mumsnet etc and decide what BJ is going to say.

This is EXACTLY what I think is happening!!
Deelish75 · 31/10/2020 16:47

@RichardMarxisinnocent

One of Robert Peston's tweets says "6) Overnight stays away from home will be allowed only for work purposes.." What does that mean for support bubbles? Can I still stay overnight at my DP's home as we are a support bubble, therefore the same as one household?
I thought support bubbles were classed as one household who just go between two houses, so I presume that’s still allowed - I hope it is.
the80sweregreat · 31/10/2020 16:48

I don't think they can close schools to be honest. They got away with it once, but I doubt they can do it again.

KOKOagainandagain · 31/10/2020 16:49

I assume the good citizens of lewisham are all taking their vitamin d

It didn't have to be this way, but, now, it does because we are in the territory of crisis management.

Mainstream education failed my autistic Dc but even I can see that teachers and teaching unions are in the right here and their views are supported by experience, logic and science and desire for fairness not based on geography which sees 50% of DC in some regions out of school.

There are ways of ensuring EOTAS. Fund it. Where necessary reclassify DC as able to attend brick school with those with an EHCP or key worker parents when schools are closed. Eminently doable without risking increase of transmission and protecting those most at risk from educational loss. This would also minimise risk to teachers and supporting staff and the wider community.

The only loss would be to batshit crazy ideology that schools must remain open regardless.

From a personal perspective, I get that things feel desperate when you have work obligations and your child is out of school and their mental health is spiralling downward. But you can take comfort that this is the norm. You don't also have to deal with assessments, tribunals, CAMHs.

This isn't for the long term and you are not dealing with a child in crisis but you do have to deal with it in the short-term. In comparison it is really not that hard. Sometimes you have to step up. Do this instead of railing against teachers.

Crystalknobs · 31/10/2020 16:50

I wouldn’t be surprised if some people start moving in with family members or partners before the announcement.

Aragog · 31/10/2020 16:50

I don't think they can close schools to be honest. They got away with it once, but I doubt they can do it again.

They could. What would people do if they simply said they were closed? In reality, most would just comply though I imagine those claiming their key worker space would be higher.

They won't though. They'd have to then admit schools aren't covid secure. If they do that they'd have to actually fund measures that might help them to become so.

errr is that enough Dom - see you for Easter when fingers crossed we'll be through it and we can Bing the Bongs for COVID together.

Aragog · 31/10/2020 16:53

So if 'work' can still happen re travel and overnight stays - which workplaces can stay open?

I will be going to work (once my sick leave is over) as I work in a school.

But will DH? He's a solicitor. He was classed as a key worker last time as he specialises in wills and probate, but worked from home. he is now working FT in the office and seeing clients both int he office and in their homes. He seems to think he will still be going out to work, though we dont't know that as yet. And if he is - well it isn't a lockdown again is it??

knittingaddict · 31/10/2020 16:53

I'm fairly sure that means things like holidays and weekends away and staying with family members/friends who it isn't possible to be in a support bubble with. I don't think they will do away with legitimate support bubbles for single people.
