Yay.

Second wave coming
OP posts:
Ravenesque · 18/09/2020 19:45

@CurlyhairedAssassin

The only thing that confuses me about the second wave is when did the first wave end?

Have you never been to the beach, then?

Yes I was in Bournemouth during the heatwave and it was heaving!

I obviously understand waves, but when exactly do we say the first wave ended? In July when we had a low of under four hundred cases in one day and it's been uphill since then? If we say that was the end of the first wave then the second wave got hot and heavy at least a month ago when we hit the 1k point again.

BooseysMom · 18/09/2020 19:46

@notevenat20what do you mean by teachers playing ball?

As a pp asked, I'd like to know what this is supposed to mean too. As an above poster says, there are some very scared secondary teachers out there and my DH is one of them. Newly qualified and thrown into the shit pit!

TheSeedsOfADream · 18/09/2020 19:46

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

I read an article in The Spectator today( not my normal reading) apparently Boris is falling apart.
And if his biggest sycophants think he's shit, then what are his critics thinking...
Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 19:48

Boris is clearly falling to bits he really hasn’t the intellect for this.

And anyone is a teacher anyone who teacher bashes right now really is a clueless twat.

Dominicgoings · 18/09/2020 19:49

@Stinkyguineapig

so then what is the point in locking down? It just kicks the can further down the road. So lockdown for a few months again and as soon as restrictions ease cases rise again?

Chris whitby said back in April (iirc) that he imagined the rest of the year would be Lockdowns, followed by easing of restrictions, in a pattern, and he envisaged SD to last at least a year.

People conveniently forget this. All the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth for something that has been predicted for months.
MJMG2015 · 18/09/2020 19:49

@SoManyActivities

How dare^ he put this on 'The British People'.

Fuck him.

No thanks!

There was a time when I thought that might be fun, but it's LONG gone!

JustFrigginNameChange · 18/09/2020 19:49

Instead of sensationlising things, I wish the media would state the facts like numbers of people dying + their age/underlying conditions; and what percentage of the population are hospitalised due solely to covid vs. Who have it without serious symptoms or any for that matter.

I wish the media would stop scaring people as it's doing more harm that good and turning people into the worst versions of themselves.

The media focuses on '4k new cases today!!!' (Or whatever the number is ) and not '0.0001% of the population were hospitalised due to (solely) covid today!!!'

And perhaps they could also stop with the 'young person dies today! (This could be you!!)', narrative and give us some more of the behind the scenes details which is often not mentioned (underlying condition, obesity etc.)

I always do my best to keep socially distant/wear masks etc. But I just can't take sensationalist headlines very seriously.

jessstan2 · 18/09/2020 19:53

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

Oh finally! We've been waiting ages for Season 2. People kept promising it'd be released after Bournemouth, BLM, Easter etc.
You forgot Brexit and the Aussie fires.
CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/09/2020 19:54

Yes, schools are terrifying places to work just now. You are basically just throwing yourselves to the lions. Remember back to secondarly school and how crowded corridors and yards were.....nothing's changed. Maybe some things are worse. Some classrooms are FAR too small. I was in one today and despite all the windows being open it was terrible stuffy. The classroom door almost touched the row of desks at the front. In another, the door was propped open by the nearest desk. There literally was nowhere else to stand if you weren't the teacher, but had to visit the classroom for another reason. In the door way, less than a metre from the nearest kid.

Yard duty in a boys' secondary school is an eye opener, I tell you. They are so PHYSICAL. Despite the repeated warnings and reminders.

jessstan2 · 18/09/2020 19:54

@Teenageromance

But it won’t be done will it - it will last all winter.
Ah but winter will come to an end and there will be spring.
notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 19:54

Or there may not be and we’ll be back in the same shit next September

That is of course possible. My bet is on some sort of medical advance before then however. If only because of the vast resources that have been poured in to medical research about covid.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 19:55

People conveniently forget this.
All the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth for something that has been predicted for months

No it isn’t forgotten. It is pretty bloody obvious to anyone with half a brain. And a person with half a brain will therefore question whether it is really the right course of action. Particularly with the reference to at least.

Staffy1 · 18/09/2020 19:55

What a surprise...not. But I suppose schools will still be told to remain open and everyone will be nagged into going back to offices.

Devlesko · 18/09/2020 19:56

"covid times are coming" the new xmas coke advert.

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2020 19:56

Now we have the health facilities in place and healthcare staff have had a practice run and know what to expect I think we should just get on with it. Masks have been sod all use because as soon as someone puts on a mask they think they convey a super protective forcefield allowing them to drop all the other preventive measures.

Littlemissdaredevil · 18/09/2020 19:57

Devon and Cornwall oviously haven’t got the message that there is a second wave yet. Cases have gone up from 154 to 155 in a week (yes that is a rise of one case) across a population of 2 million. In the Devon County Council area (800,000 people) they have actually gone down from 71 to 48 cases.

notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 19:57

notevenat20what do you mean by teachers playing ball?

The teachers unions could decide they want teachers to stay at home. Its not clear the govt could do anything to stop that.

knittingaddict · 18/09/2020 19:57

It doesn't attack you through your butthole, you know.

I did not know that.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 19:57

My bet is on some sort of medical advance before then however. If only because of the vast resources that have been poured in to medical research about covid.

I hope you are still alive and well then. About 1000k people die each day regardless of covid.

EwwSprouts · 18/09/2020 19:57

Local primary has closed but it was the teachers not the children infecting each other. The hot spot started with an adult who had a party just after coming back from a holiday abroad.

Staffy1 · 18/09/2020 19:58

Ah but winter will come to an end and there will be spring.

But not for the thousands killed by the virus.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/09/2020 19:58

The teachers unions could decide they want teachers to stay at home. Its not clear the govt could do anything to stop that.

What the unions decide and what the teachers do are unlikely to be the same thing.

OhTheRoses · 18/09/2020 19:58

It's hugely difficult, but we squashed the sombrero when the scientists knew little. There is now a far bigger cache of treatments and knowledge so hopefully the repercussions will be better managed this time and the press may be a little less sensationalist.

The one thing that remains spectacularly dismal is testing and it is hard not to draw a lewd analogy with Mr Hancock and those who leave much to be desired.

Please may we have a committee comprising: Johnson, Starmer, Brown, May, Tania Mathias, Clarke, and similar to drag us out of this chuffing mess.

notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 19:59

Yes , schools are terrifying places to work just now. You are basically just throwing yourselves to the lions

I don't think this is reasonable. Schools are open all over the world and teachers have not been falling like flies.

PhilSwagielka · 18/09/2020 19:59

I've applied for vaccine research. Fingers crossed.
