A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Thanks for starting this thread. Feeling really down about all of this today so it's nice to be reminded there is reason for hope! Particularly excited by this new treatment they are trialling. Could be a game changer.

Mybrowneyedgal · 21/07/2020 16:12

Great thread

Forgone90 · 21/07/2020 17:39

Very good thread... Many people do not want to admit things may be looking up. That's not to slate them and I get that many people will not want to build up hope incase it is slashed.. However this week feels like a real turning point... Even in florida their R rate is got down to 1 now and they have done that while everything is open (not saying it was the right way) it does show that the spread can be reduced even if we begin to get back to normal. I think people will naturally social distanc e for a couple of years. By this I mean be More considerate in shops and while walking in the street etc.

We are Not out of the woods yet but their is light at the end of the tunnel. If the 79% is correct that is huge is it essentially means out of every 10 people that would normally go into ICU only 2 will have to with this drug.. That essentially cuts the hospital death rate by 4/5ths which is incredible work.

Our scientists are really making up for the shower of shit that the government have done and the uk may just come out of this with some credibility still intact.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 18:02

It's good to hear. Many other health problems have no cure and very limited treatment.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 21/07/2020 18:06

This is good news. Sometimes it all feels so bleak, but these stats are very cheery.

DebLou47 · 21/07/2020 18:23

Yey xxx

JumpingJackFrost · 21/07/2020 19:39

Thanks for this I'm always pleased to see good news and there seems to be a fair bit around this week 😊

Great news and i’ve had my hair done 😊 life is getting back to normal

Elsa8 · 21/07/2020 19:56

I actually cried a little bit at the vaccine news yesterday. Science is bloody awesome!

annabel85 · 21/07/2020 19:58

Even if a vaccine isn't found/workable eventually antivirals will be found to treat Covid and the top story suggests it could be sooner than later.

LaurieMarlow · 21/07/2020 20:01

Now be careful OP. You’re not allowed to be hopeful and positive on here. The doom mongers will be here any minute to put you in your place.

But YAANBU it’s great to see the progress being made.

pandafunfactory · 21/07/2020 20:10

I work in a hospital. Admissions have basically dried up. We will maintain the isolation facilities but Covid isn't putting any pressure on us at all directly. Clearing up the mess and dealing with social distancing is another matter.
I've worked with this thing for four months now, it doesn't frighten me. Lots of reasons to be very positive.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 21/07/2020 20:11

Great thread op - I’m so proud of our scientists

Yetiyoga · 21/07/2020 20:35

Yes, I'm really hopeful too. I have so much hope that the Oxford vaccine will be ready this year.

Poppyliveshere · 21/07/2020 21:17

Glad I’ve stumbled across this post as there are some awful doom mongers on MN at the moment; they must enjoy being so miserable I guess Hmm

It is awful atm. There used to be alot more positive people on here who would provide some balance but I think they have all given up!

Thank you for this thread!

Blueberryham · 21/07/2020 21:52

I wonder how quickly the protein treatment can be approved for use. Feeling very hopeful about this one 🤞

MotherMorph · 21/07/2020 21:55

Thanks OP, I feel like even though its summer, it might be a long and bleak winter and this gives some light and hope at the end of the tunnel. 🤞🤞🤞

DebLou47 · 21/07/2020 22:03

Can we continue to be positive on here the doom and goomsters get me down

It hasnt been published yet so they will have to do that first and then maybe a larger trial before they start rolling it out nationwide.

However it is a drug which is already used for other illnesses, so although they will need to do trials to find out if it works they should already know about side effects and so on, so no need for safety trials.

Glad this thread has cheered some people up! Would anyone care to share other positive news I've missed?
