A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

So glad to see this thread! There is so much negativity around at the moment, this is much needed!

CallmeAngelina · 26/07/2020 12:59

As was the Times piece confirming the lack of proven child to teacher transmission.
Sorry, positivity is one thing, but that Times piece did not "confirm" any such thing!!
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Delta1 · 26/07/2020 13:06

Yes it absolutely did confirm a lack of proven child to teacher transmission. Exactly as I said. I choose my words very carefully. I also read other people's posts very carefully.

I found this through Apple News but haven't seen it anywhere else. 21 more drugs that have been selected that could treat Covid:-

www.gov.uk/government/news/weekly-statistics-show-nhs-test-and-trace-is-reaching-the-highest-number-of-contacts

This is a positive report about the fact contact tracing is actually going really well and most tests results are coming back really quickly - both things are essential in terms of getting on top of any rise in cases. I'm sure improvements could always be made by they have a few months to tweak things before winter sets in.

Designerenvy · 27/07/2020 00:02

Daily numbers here in Ireland low.
Very few in ICU.
Schools look very likely to open in Sept as normal.

Fingers crossed and positive thoughts for an effective treatment and/ or vaccine.

More than a million Britons quit smoking www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53403610
Hope everyone sticks to it, it will have long term health benefits.

feelingverylazytoday · 27/07/2020 03:33

@Figmentofmyimagination

I’m quite excited to see the government’s commitment to cycling and the link to obesity. I really hope this translates into real money and change.
Apparently Boris Johnson is a big fan of cycling.
Pixxie7 · 27/07/2020 04:10

Any good news is especially welcome at the moment, great thread.

It is spurring me on to keep losing a few more pounds in weight too!

When they announced about Dexamethasone in the briefing they talked about the "recovery" trial where several more drugs are being tried out too. I've seen links to a couple more drugs (one for osteoporosis and one for high cholesterol) that say they're looking promising but it's behind a paywall in the telegraph and I can't link. I think there are a lot of drugs out there that will eventually see Covid-19 becoming a completely treatable illness.

This is good news, what has pleased me recently is that there have been a lot of reported outbreaks where they know the source and are able to it things in place (and hopefully get it under control) fairly quickly.

DebLou47 · 28/07/2020 19:16

Any good news today

Jrobhatch29 · 28/07/2020 19:57

Not so much good news, but I found this interesting
www.google.com/amp/s/m.economictimes.com/industry/healthcare/biotech/healthcare/mumbai-sero-survey-shows-57-of-those-in-slums-already-infected/amp_articleshow/77226163.cms

57% of Mumbai slums have antibodies. I am not saying this is a good thing that so many infected. The article says this makes the overall IFR 0.05 to 0.1% which is obviously very low considering poor sanitation, overall health and access to health care etc.

Jrobhatch29 · 28/07/2020 20:04

Hopefully with such high levels it may be mainly over for them!

Sunshinegirl82 · 28/07/2020 20:06

Goodness, those levels are very high. They must be at, or approaching, herd immunity with those levels.

Jrobhatch29 · 28/07/2020 20:09

Yes hopefully. Considering the standard of living and the population density that ifr is remarkable really!
Sunshinegirl82 · 28/07/2020 20:33

Obviously you would never wish for such large numbers of people to be infected. That said it might be a very informative population to study as that IFR doesn't make sense based on the data from other countries. Perhaps the community has been exposed to another coronavirus and already has a level of immunity? I'm just guessing obviously but it just seems so strikingly low!
