A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

The sniffer dogs will be a game changer too.

I see we don't yet have a photo of the dogs, so continuing the feel good theme, here they are.

Of those, I would most like to be sniffed by Asher (as soon as she comes down from whatever the he'll she's on).

This cracked me up 😂 dog looks fresh out of an illegal rave 😂

Why go and randomly burst into negativity on a 'positive news' thread. So people not read the title? Confused
They are like wasps at a picnic aren't they. Always showing up when they aren't wanted 😂

How amazing are these!

Seriously though let's get a sniffer dog in every school and workplace ASAP. What a lovely way to beat a pandemic Grin

A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

This is very promising news obviously but the delivery mechanism that Synairgen are using is a nebuliser using lyophilised powder whereas INF-beta is a solution that injected when used as an MS treatment. So it will still need Ph III trials and stability studies etc (whereas dexamethasone was cheap, readily available and could be used immediately). Positive news but probably will only be used in clinical trials this winter rather than being widely available.

Yes, like wasps why not start a new thread "everything is terrible and it will never change" oh hang on there is one!

Sure, but surely there's enough evidence to allow this drug to be used on compassionate grounds?

I love these dogs.... I think they need their own appreciation thread really Grin

CarrieBlue · 23/07/2020 17:32

there was money within the existing budget for the pay rise for teachers. I'm sure some money will be found to implement the government guidelines.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Pomegranatepompom · 23/07/2020 18:31

There are a lot of people far too comfortable WFH/ working reduced hours with no motivation or desire to change how things have been.
Lovely to have a positive thread, bit mean to dampen the mood.

Shodan · 23/07/2020 18:48

Those dogs are awesome!

Asher looks like she'd definitely be good fun on a night out...

So nice to read positive news Smile

CountFosco · 23/07/2020 18:59

Yes, but you can't tell from that documentation if they are still recruiting ph2 or are starting recruitment for ph3 trials. One of the biggest delays to clinical trials is the recruiting of patients so they will be recruiting continually until the trials are finished/they use up their stock.

Sure, but surely there's enough evidence to allow this drug to be used on compassionate grounds?

I doubt that Synairgen would put 'compassionate use' above recruiting people to their clinical trials. I also have no idea about their manufacturing process, where it is made, when they next have a manufacturing slot, or how much BDS they have in stock for their trials. If they just have enough for Ph3 trials that is what it will be used for. The company has been around for 15-20 years but don't appear to have taken any product through to commercial release so that might impact timelines as well.

Looking at the patient information sheet it says that the injectable form has a rare side effect (

@ohthegoats

WITH a possible vaccine possibly on the horizon, it’s time to ignore all official advice on the pandemic and do whatever you like. Try these excuses:

‘I’m outside’

Being outside dramatically slows the spread of the virus. It does not confer complete immunity and nobody’s ever said it did, but feel free to use it as your catch-all excuse for an all-day drinking session and barbecue with 20 other households.

‘Nobody I know’s had it’

Must be a myth then, if nobody in your small circle of acquaintances contracted it while the entire country was on lockdown. Just like swine flu and bird flu were bollocks because they didn’t kill anyone you knew personally. Get out and mingle.

‘I watched this bloke on YouTube…’

The perfect sentence to tune out immediately afterwards. In this case you watched some half-witted conspiracy theorist assemble misleading media clips about Covid and have decided that gives you enough cover to go to an overcrowded illegal rave in a car park.

‘I’ve probably had it’

Loads of people are asymptomatic, and who’s to say you’re not one of them? You did feel really hot back when there was all that sunny weather in April. In which case you’re perfectly safe and can do the TransPennine Real Ale Trail.

‘They’ve got a vaccine’

By interpreting news stories extremely selectively and ignoring all caveats, you can convince yourself there’s a vaccine ready for injection by September. Why else would the government open all the schools? Ayia Napa, anyone?

Go to the doom and gloom threads
ScarlettDarling · 23/07/2020 20:50

Loving the positive news. None of us are stupid, we know we need to be careful, wear masks etc but surely we can do it with a sense of optimism?
I can't wait to get back to teaching my class in September and I can't wait for my own dc to get back to school and have some semblance of normality.
Please keep on posting the positive stories and please, if you aren't feeling positive about things, don't post it on a rare positive thread.

How will 6 sniffer dogs be a game-changer? Confused I'm sure we have more than 6 sniffer dogs working at ports etc to detect illegal drugs....and yet you can still buy illegal drugs in every city/town/village in the UK.

I'm all for a good news thread....but that's stretching it a bit!

Jrobhatch29 · 24/07/2020 08:54

Yeah bore off people with your facts and brains! Grin (Not been on furlough, been happily working throughout in a non-public workspace with my lovely colleagues) Was happy in lockdown, am happy now.

What is ironic is those teachers who whine endlessly about 'teacher bashing' and then turn up to fret to derail a positive thread with the stuff they bang on endlessly about in their own pompous'Staffroom' threads ( and if you want batshit doom and gloom there's the place to find it!😀) Let the rest of us have a misery-free zone of realism.
Thanks OP for publicising good news -some of us are delighted to hear it!

I was enjoying the positive news and break from teacher bashing until this post. Ridiculously nasty and uncalled for
Fedup21 · 24/07/2020 10:19

@openplankitchen

And yet there are teachers on here terrified about returning to school full time from September.

There needs to be some very public statements by high profile people to reassure them. The link above from the SAGE epidemiologist is a great start Smile

I think it was started with this poster who took a positive thread with nice things in it and started randomly talking about teachers.

I have seen lots of posts from office workers and commuters not wanting to return to the office as it’s not safe. They sound worried. Why target teachers?

CallmeAngelina · 24/07/2020 10:34

Why target teachers?

Exactly. But I'm afraid that's what openplankitchen likes to do. And it is precisely that sort of posting that will bring the thread down.

NeurotrashWarrior · 24/07/2020 10:36

Good news is great. At the same time this is in relation to things like medical discoveries as yet fully untested, during a worldwide pandemic.

It's close to cancel culture and an echo chamber, or at least foolish and immature, to deny debate around caveats relating news about the coronavirus pandemic.

I found the sniffer dog story delightful. I'm so reassured that in my area, numbers are low and stable, no clusters and last week no cases in schools. I'm reassured that people I know in the nhs know about the vaccine and are very positive. Every single one has then added caveats due to the known unknowns and the unknown unknowns. It's basic problem solving.

Going forward into sept the vaccine and treatment news is reassuring to me, especially as I'm classed as CV and working with Sen . It would be foolish of me, working in the coal face, as a professional, to discount the very real challenges my own profession has to overcome in the coming months, which were already an issue before Covid.

It's offensive to have those concerns dismissed. Primarily as realism is what will solve the issues schools have and help to keep them open.

How many dismiss the very real concerns from nhs workers around the coming winter season?
