A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Also i think it's great that some of this cutting edge science is coming out of the UK. I live in Southampton so the protein trial is particularly close to me. I'm sure other countries have scientists working hard as well but I have heard a lot about the vaccine coming out of oxford as a leading contender.

Just wait for olddog and that dad person to show up and start shouting second wave and bodies piling up. Btw I am writing this from a holiday home in Wales. Been to a theme park and the beach and guess what. I'm not dead Smile

There is no immunity!!!!!!!!

Sounds fab. Glad you didn't die Smile

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 21/07/2020 22:47

Any news on wider access ti antibody tests? I really want to know!

Coronabored · 21/07/2020 22:48

Appreciate it thanks Smile in all seriousness it is good news about the vaccine and the treatment, much cause to be positive

saucyspice · 21/07/2020 23:01

This thread makes me feel so much better about everything....things HAVE to get betterSmile

Twothousandzerozero · 21/07/2020 23:09

Nothing useful to add but shamelessly place-marking - I need this thread! Grin

daisymay133 · 21/07/2020 23:13

It’s crazy

I’m north west and here people partied through Easter, VE Day, Manchester protests, we went the beaches in crowds, we’ve all been the pub (a lot!) since they’ve opened and guess what ? The five nearest hospitals near me haven’t had a single case admitted in a month!!! No second wave

Ethelfleda · 21/07/2020 23:30

Great thread - following!

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2020 00:40

Scientists in the field have been optimistic all along that a vaccine would be found - and probably several

Teams all around the world are working on vaccines
This kind of effort will produce results

Many countries like the UK and also organisations like Bill Gates' have paid for work to be done in parallel to save time
and also paid in advance for millions of doses to be manufactured,
so there needn't be any delay after approval before vaccination can start

imo, a vaccine is very likely be developed AND the vaccination program carried out by the end of next year

Also, many countries will jointly fund the cost of vaccination to developing countries,
so everyone around the world can be vaccinated, regardless of how poor they are.

Daffodilius · 22/07/2020 02:14

Nice thread.

This is a nice thread.

@bigchocfrenzy

That's what I hope and it does look positive so far.

It feels nice to agree to this on here and not be called a "daydreamer" or a "pollyanna" because Valance has said it could be over a year, if at all until a vaccine is found.

Thanks for the positives OP.

Sailingblue · 22/07/2020 07:03

I think the protein is potentially a game changer. I’ve heard Vallance say before that he thought the first breakthroughs would be treatments and not the vaccine. Obviously the oxford trial is promising but it will still be some time and winter is coming. Both news stories were great but I was most excited by the protein work.

TheABC · 22/07/2020 07:18

It's looking good for a vaccine. Even without it, there's a lot more knowledge of how the virus works and ways to stop people from needing ventilation in the first place.

I remain hopeful for September. :-)

Climbingallthetrees · 22/07/2020 07:26

The really good thing about the interferon beta trial is that there were no deaths at all in the group who got the drug. Obviously it’s a small trial so we don’t know if those results can be replicated, but it’s definitely promising.

Keyperfect · 22/07/2020 07:36

Hear, hear! Round of applause for our wonderful scientists. It can be a thankless job and IMO underappreciated and for many, underpaid. We need to encourage more of our bright young people into sciences (rather than banking...)

Its funny how they all hang on Vallances word again when not so long ago he was a mass murderer over herd immunity Hmm

I agree, lovely to see there are some optimistic people on here too Smile

Oxyiz · 22/07/2020 08:07

Thanks for this OP, I've given up engaging on news about coronavirus as it was too exhausting. Its nice to see some positive things around.

Nice to see canada are considering how we can still safely have sex. My favourite tips being "YOU are your safest sex partner" and "consider using a glory hole"
Ffs 🤣
Thought this might make you all smile this morning.

Carehomes in England to be opened to visitors again
www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/coronavirus-news-uk-cases-deaths-vaccine-latest-phe/
This is a big step forward and I'm sure a lot to many people.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/07/2020 15:02

^ 'will mean a lot to many people'

IloveJKRowling · 22/07/2020 15:11

The new treatments are really good news, I'm more positive about those than the vaccine at the moment as all the vaccines have a long way to go before approval, with a lot of potential pitfalls. If we can treat it so it is more like the flu in terms of death rate and long term effects then that would be a start.

The medical and science community has worked so quickly on this - it is very impressive.

I hope they get approval quickly.

TheDogsMother · 22/07/2020 15:15

Lovely thread OP and just what I needed. Its looks a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel !
