Shame we don't have an election for ages.

But great to finally have some opposition to this government again, particularly as UK deaths overtake every other country in the world apart from the Us, that has a population 5 times as big.

I political discussion really on the agenda right now.. ffs

myangelalex · 13/05/2020 10:43

And who gives a flying f?

Enb76 · 13/05/2020 10:46

He's new, he's not in government, he can criticise without actually having to have workable suggestions of how to make things better - of course his rating is higher. I would be surprised if it wasn't.

Bufferingkisses · 13/05/2020 10:47

Grin op you can ONLY discuss subjects by prior approval of the thread police The Management. Didn't you get the memo?

I agree, now is when we really need a proper opposition who will question and challenge where needed and there are plenty of areas where it is needed. Shame they didn't put Starmer in sooner but glad he's here now.

SinglePringle · 13/05/2020 10:48

I give a flying fuck as I want the Government - any Government - to have a strong Opposition. Regardless of political stance, I want all decisions to be rigorously interrogated. Keir is doing that and, given that his popularity ratings are increasing, many people are clearly pleased about it.

irregularegular · 13/05/2020 10:51

Absolutely. Though I cannot believe how many people still think that Boris Johnson is doing well!!! It is imperative that the opposition impose some discipline on the ineptitude and carelessness that currently comprise government policy - and reflects their shambolic arrogance in general. Keir Starmer is making a decent job of that so far.

PlayinMay · 13/05/2020 10:52

I think that wherever you sit on the political divide, someone like Keir is ideal at the moment because Boris, love him or hate him, does not like to be held down to answer tough questions. This is fine for most of his life and career, but the point is that ANY and ALL country leaders have to be able to be scrutinised closely.

For someone who is very skilled at avoiding questions he doesn't want to answer and answering the ones he wanted to be asked, then an ideal opponent is a successful barrister who is used to cross examining people.

I am so sick of polarising politics. Believe me, I grew up in NI and extreme political opposition is toxic and paralysing and horrible and spills over too easily into violence no matter which end of the spectrum you're from.

Responsible, thoughtful centrism and less hubristic waffling from BOTH sides is key and I think Keir fulfils this need.

PlayinMay · 13/05/2020 10:53

@singlepringle exactly!

InglouriousBasterd · 13/05/2020 10:58

Good. His eloquence and intelligence shows up the shortcomings of the government, which is needed right now.

Stellaris22 · 13/05/2020 11:03

@SinglePringle very well said

ssd · 13/05/2020 11:05

Thank god Labour have got someone like him at last.

chomalungma · 13/05/2020 11:05

Waiting till a certain person turns up with an opinion poll.

All polls are irrelevant now until the next election. All I can say is that this is going to be a bumpy few years, Tory spending plans have been shot, Brexit will be interesting and Boris Johnson et al are under scrutiny like never before.

jobhunter7 · 13/05/2020 11:14

What does Keir think we should do as regards policy to get through this crisis? Contact tracing? Quarantining? More PPE?

NoraEphronsneck · 13/05/2020 11:17

There is never a time when politics don't need to be discussed. If you don't want to read about it or engage then scroll on by.

I agree that Keir Starmer is very much the man for the job and a breath of fresh air.

Every single decision being made today will have ramifications for the long-term future of our country, so the definition of political Confused

FairIsleViking · 13/05/2020 11:28

I political discussion really on the agenda right now.. ffs

You're kidding, right?

Which bit of this current shitshow situation is not political, exactly?

Thank FUCK for a functioning opposition at last.

Confusedbutheyho · 13/05/2020 11:30

He will give good opposition and he’ll represent Labour better.

millymae · 13/05/2020 11:38

I’m not surprised to be honest - Keir Starmer has a Prime Ministerial air about him that Boris Johnson doesn’t.
He talks sense and talks clearly neither of which Mr Johnson seems capable of doing.
I have zero respect for our current Prime Minister and several other members of his cabinet to be honest and think that if the party was choosing a Prime Minister now the result would be very different.

chomalungma · 13/05/2020 11:50

PMQs soon

B1rdbra1n · 13/05/2020 11:52

I'm a big fan of Keir Starmer and I think others will learn from his questioning style, I think this is a good thing😊
Boris needs to be held to account and Keir is the person to do it!

chomalungma · 13/05/2020 11:53

I loved it when he used the Government's own data to reject what Boris claimed.

Changeyname40 · 13/05/2020 11:55

I am glad for the questioning and personally pleased that Keir is in. Let us not forget though that it is not hard to criticise right now, and we do not actually know what Keir's policies would be or how effective he would be at delivering on them. Still got a long way to prove himself imho.

chomalungma · 13/05/2020 12:00

Still got a long way to prove himself imho

4 years?

Brexit, paying for this, red wall spending, a realisation of what's important in society

All very interesting

SinglePringle · 13/05/2020 12:05

He’s doing a pretty good job on PMQT right now.

Utterlydespairing · 13/05/2020 12:08

I’d never vote for someone with his past record

danni0509 · 13/05/2020 12:09

He's ripping into him.
