Nicola Sturgeon AKA the control freak and her construction site rules

Quite frankly I can't stand the woman. I think she's a complete control freak. She's obsessed with looking like she's doing things differently. Thankfully I don't live in Scotland but my OH does work there (construction industry) and has been off unpaid since 20th March. Massively struggling now after getting nothing but UC which goes nowhere. All construction sites have been forced to close in Scotland minus a few hospitals etc. England sites never had to close, friends in England in this trade are either at work now or have a confirmed date to go back within the next week or 2. Absolutely no mention of this in Scotland even though they are able to distance. Getting increasingly frustrated now and wondering if anyone has any insight or thoughts about when construction sites in Scotland will be allowed to reopen?

From this...

Nicola Sturgeon AKA the control freak and her construction site rules

To this...

I am not specifically blaming her for him not being paid

You absolutely meant to start a Nicola Sturgeon pile on.

I'm sorry about your financial problems but lots of us here are having the same issues but have the sense to blame the Covid-19 virus.

ssd · 29/04/2020 00:19

@usernamenotavail, can you not work?

BigChocFrenzy · 29/04/2020 10:13

Millions of people in England are in desperate financial straits too:

pay cuts, job losses, small businesses destroyed, lifetime savings being used up

but it's not fair to blame either Johnson or Sturgeon

They are just trying to keep people safe, reduce the number of people who will die

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 10:31

Scotland 70 people per sq km. England 430.

You cannot argue that isn’t a significant factor.

You might have a point if we all lived in fields miles apart from each other in lonely crofts but we don't. (All the lonely crofts are now second homes owned by people who AirBnB them out to tourists). We live in packed towns and cities like they do in England. And we have cars and roads and infrastructure too. You know, just like the rest of the world.

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 10:35

Cannot believe Nicola is being criticised for doing her job .Honestly find that bewildering...

Yep. Remember all that, "Get back to your day job" ranting the Better Together lot did when plans for Indyref 2 were mooted? Apparently now doing just that is not good enough.

Mrsjayy · 29/04/2020 10:42

Covid 19 and your family situation hard as it maybe isn't the Fm fault do you think she enjoys people not working and earning ? I think your husband has an employer problem maybe he can find a new job in England just a thought Hmm

cybercontroller · 29/04/2020 12:36

Nicola Sturgeon could single-handedly cure the virus and bring about world peace, and @babdoc would still hate it.

ssd · 29/04/2020 15:53

I think nicola sturgeon has done a great job, leading from the front, which is what she's paid to do. It looks like they draw straws in Westminster to see who does the briefings down there. I wish she had sacked the chief medical officer straight away for going away 2 weekends in a row, that was a mistake.
Other than that, I feel she's doing her best.

I listened to Johnson blustering his way through his briefing and I wonder at the mentality of people still supporting him. And to see the mps clapping for the NHS workers who gave lost their lives words fail me. They lost their lives due to lack of PPE, which is utterly down to lack of planning from the government. So to see them standing clapping turned my stomach.

Kingjarvis · 01/05/2020 06:23

Yeah she’s done a great job. She ordered the elderly into care homes from hospitals. If the Tories has done this?

Kingjarvis · 01/05/2020 06:31

That’s instead of intensive care btw

Inappropriatefemale · 01/05/2020 06:40

There was a construction site open 2 days ago in Edinburgh, I think it’s the trams but the builders were all out in force.

derxa · 01/05/2020 06:43

Don’t have a view on the safety of construction sites but she is clearly an absolute control freak. She has been on tv every single day and has sidelined all her other colleagues. Westminster has spread it out between senior politicians but she has hogged every bit of the limelight for herself. FFS

Gwynfluff · 01/05/2020 06:47

Construction industry is one of the least safe industries we have. Not unionised, loads of subcontracting, no sick pay (so workers who are ill are not going to self-isolate as willingly). But they are definitely reopening behind the scenes. Loads of work vans around, with men travelling in together then working side by side. Not sure it’s official though - but I think 4 weeks in they’ve decided it’s ‘essential’.

RebelWhoWashesFor19Seconds · 01/05/2020 07:05

I cannot stand Wee Nippy Sturgeon. And I do live in Scotland so can happily say that but you know what? Even a broken clock is right twice a day. It's not something I like to say but she's not wrong here. Construction does often have people working on top of each other.

ssd · 01/05/2020 07:08

Why does the fact you live in Scotland mean its OK for you to insult the FM then?

Peppafrig · 01/05/2020 07:11

I'm Scottish would vote for anyone before the SNP and her closing down construction sites was a fantastic thing. It protects all the workers and all their families too. You just can't do jobs on these sites and socially distance . You have so many one to hold one to screw in type jobs that can't be done by one person so they can't be 2m apart. Never mind most sites have porta toilets and no hot running water to wash their hands.

kikisparks · 01/05/2020 07:25

If you have a problem with Universal Credit (which is quite right, it’s appalling) then your quarrel is with Westminster.

runrunrunrunt · 02/05/2020 08:15

Bitter bastard of the year award goes to...

thejoysofboys · 02/05/2020 08:30

I’m in England and my site is open. We’re a huge operation though with proper canteen facilities etc. We’ve cut staff numbers on site though as our canteen could previously hold 100 seated and now we can only accommodate 21 with our one-way system and socially distanced chairs. We have 3 lunch “shifts” per day to get 60 operatives in safely and a cleaning team working hard to disinfect between every rotation.
Other work practices have been modified to prevent two person working but we’re well behind programme as we can’t have multiple trades working in close proximity as we would have done before.
So even keeping sites open doesn’t mean that everyone who used to work here still has a job.

However we’re a big organisation with high safety standards. I shudder to think about the smaller practices working on tiny premises with portaloos - no way could they keep safe.

My view is that the need for social distancing falls under the health & safety at work act and that employers who don’t put practices in place to ensure this could/should be prosecuted. That’s where it should become the employer’s responsibility for any business who decides they should be open during this time.
