Nicola Sturgeon AKA the control freak and her construction site rules

Quite frankly I can't stand the woman. I think she's a complete control freak. She's obsessed with looking like she's doing things differently. Thankfully I don't live in Scotland but my OH does work there (construction industry) and has been off unpaid since 20th March. Massively struggling now after getting nothing but UC which goes nowhere. All construction sites have been forced to close in Scotland minus a few hospitals etc. England sites never had to close, friends in England in this trade are either at work now or have a confirmed date to go back within the next week or 2. Absolutely no mention of this in Scotland even though they are able to distance. Getting increasingly frustrated now and wondering if anyone has any insight or thoughts about when construction sites in Scotland will be allowed to reopen?

Most other government leaders are holding daily briefings, England are the odd ones out there. Boris got fed up doing them in the first week then he got sick, now he’s back to not being bothered, and whoever gets the short straw does it.

Bartlet · 28/04/2020 19:38

Sonichu. Hardly a well thought out and reasoned retort there.

Read up on the SNP gagging clause which they’ve been operating under for the past few years. They all need to toe the partyline with zero public discourse.

StoorieHoose · 28/04/2020 19:39

Op why have you just posted this today when the building sites were closed 4 weeks ago?

Mysocalledlifexx · 28/04/2020 19:42

Think she is doing a great job im in scotland & your not so op should stop having a dig at her when it isnt anything to do with u.

One of my contractors has 3 sites open at the moment, it’s really hard to keep it under control, they have a one way system and only one trade type on one site at a time, trades are switching between the three sites, seems to be working but it’s under very strict control.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/04/2020 19:49

"keeping the construction sites shut is the right thing to do at the moment"

Yep

Not everyone in the construction industry - or those they come into contact with - are so keen to take risks for money as you and your OH are

Sonichu · 28/04/2020 19:51

"Sonichu. Hardly a well thought out and reasoned retort there"

Yawn. If she stood back and let others make the announcement you'd call her a coward hiding behind her minions.

PestymcPestFace · 28/04/2020 19:58

Southern England here. Two big building sites in town, one reopened yesterday, only seems to be two people on site.

Most local builders are whinging like mad.

Where are all these open in England sites?

Squilp · 28/04/2020 20:00

Disliking Nicola Sturgeon or her policies is not the same as disliking Scotland.

JKScot4 · 28/04/2020 20:04

I think you’ll find our Covid 19 deaths are reducing whereas England’s are increasing, but god forbid your man can’t work!!
Rather Ms Sturgeon who takes advice from scientist and medical experts any day than that bumbling idiot who is happy for
ppl to die while his boss Cummings advises him 🙄🙄

Veterinari · 28/04/2020 20:05

Yeah bloody Nicola Sturgeon imposing control over the Scottish people... anyone would think she was an elected leader following sound scientific advice or something...Hmm

If only there were some evidence (like a lower mortality rate perhaps) that supported her 'controlling' policies? Oh, wait....

JKScot4 · 28/04/2020 20:06

To add, let your DH get a job in your wonderful England, nasty grabby person that you are.

TheSandman · 28/04/2020 20:08

" It’s very typically SNP as they are fanatical about staying on message and never allowing any public differences of opinion."

(Obviously never been to any of the branch meetings I've been to.)

But if you mean they are good at staying on message and toeing the line in public. Yep. They do because isn't that what political parties are supposed to do? Just because the Tories, Labour, and Lib Dems fight their internal battles in plain view - and fucked us up in Europe while they do it - doesn't mean we have to.

Unescorted · 28/04/2020 20:14

Pesty I can't find them either. All of my sites in England are currently closed. There is talk of reopening some of them - but only to water tight. We can't see a way of SD for indoor trades or getting bricks or roof timbers to get to that stage.

Building control is also an issue as is getting sign off for the pre coms. with some planning departments being furloughed or re - deployed to COVID frontline work.

StoorieHoose · 28/04/2020 20:18

heard that Taylor Wimpy sites will be opening in Monday in England and they are trying to convince SG to allow them to open sites in Scotland. However they will really need to step.up.the welfare facilities cos the site DH is on is appalling

Laiste · 28/04/2020 20:26

DH is a builder, site closed down and he's been off for the last 5 weeks. Possibly going back next monday but not official yet. England. Midlands. Where are all these open sites? Confused

The bloody HS2 construction site a few miles away has stayed open mind you .... Hmm

longtimecomin · 28/04/2020 20:29

They're going back on the 11th May in Scotland to answer your question. I work in construction, me and my team deliver 400 units per year across Scotland at northern England. Most of England sites are back or gearing up.

longtimecomin · 28/04/2020 20:37

And for all of you asking where the open sites are, the big company's like Barrett persimmon etc closed the week following the lockdown and furloughed site staff but are opening gradually in coming weeks, the popular good selling sites first then the less popular ones. The sites which have stayed open are the smaller local contractors who aren't plugged in to the government. Out of about 30 live schemes I cover, 3 worked through the last few weeks, the rest closed and furloughed. Most are starting up this week or in the next couple of weeks. Unless sales have been poor there.

cacaca · 28/04/2020 20:40

Out of interest, where does your husband stay when in Scotland? His own flat or in digs? Wouldn’t be any point him coming back with nowhere to stay would there?

Squilp · 28/04/2020 20:46

How can they furlough if there is paid work to be done and it is possible to work safely (even if that is not always done in practice)?

StoorieHoose · 28/04/2020 20:51

You can't practice social distancing on a budding site so they are furloughed

donquixotedelamancha · 28/04/2020 20:56

I'm honestly not bothered about people's opinions on my opinion, that's all it is, an opinion.

I feel the same way about lots of subjects.

One of the things which really helps me avoid hearing unwanted opinions is that I tend not to post about those particular subjects on discussion forums.

JKScot4 · 28/04/2020 20:56

@TheSandman
Thank you 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Sparklingplasters · 28/04/2020 20:58

It’s not a Scottish issue, Plenty of construction sites closed in London due to fears over not being able to socially distance effectively, these sites are are starting to start work again next week. Furlough ends Monday for a lot of workers. The main issue was with the actual workers, stood around chatting, or in the canteen moving chairs to fit around a table with their mates, when chairs had been removed from said table to allow for distancing.

On the sites I’m aware of, distancing or not following the distancing rules will get the same treatnebg as they would if not abiding by other health and safety site rules

donquixotedelamancha · 28/04/2020 21:03

In Scotland it makes it look like NS doesn’t trust any of her other colleagues.

I disagree. I think there is a huge advantage to having one person taking charge of comms in a crisis. From what I've seen the Scottish briefings have been much clearer and more reassuring.
