PPE isn't that glamorous is it? I just can't see VB telling her staff to make 'designer ' masks or aprons! I think she would rather let her accountants tell her what she can claim in order to keep the company afloat. Saves her having to ask her husband for cash for a change.

Mary1935 · 22/04/2020 08:17

We shouldn’t be paying to furlong her staff. I assume the government will see it’s not a viable business and not pay out.
However it is the staff that will suffer.
Put your hands in your over sized pockets Beckhams.
Shame on you and shame on the government if the pay out to them.

twirlycat77 · 22/04/2020 08:18

I hope that this year is the year talentless celebrities fall out of everyone’s favour. Our obsession with celebrity is ridiculous. Let’s face it VB doesn’t have any talents, as do half the others out there.

vera99 · 22/04/2020 08:19

Branson's island has been destroyed twice in the last 10 years. I'd value it like oil - negative value. So Richard what else have you got to pawn?

HannahStern · 22/04/2020 08:20

Your obsession with celebrity is ridiculous. You forgot the Y.

@The80sweregreat there is nothing fashion can't find to exploit...

Thing is though that we normal people are taking and will continue to take a massive hit on our lifestyle. Many of us will go from a decent paid job with a few luxuries to being on UC. Some of us are going to be skint for ages and we know it and know we have got to get on with it.

Why do the rick think they are exempt from the consequences from this global catastrophe, this act of God? They shouldn't be. They should lose out, just like we are.

NiteFlights · 22/04/2020 08:25

Whether a business is profitable is irrelevant - if a business was paying its employees before the crisis then it should be eligible for furlough payments, whether it’s a loss-making business, a charity, a not-for-profit, whatever.

Verily1 · 22/04/2020 08:25

As above it’s a vanity ‘business’. It’s her responsibility to keep it going.

GingerScallop · 22/04/2020 08:26

DeRigueurMortis I like your arguments especially about criteria. As for "people will remember this", I doubt very much. Im probably a cynic but I think most people these days are so immersed in the celebrity culture that when it comes to them, critical thinking is suspended. Example: all those that praise celebrities' "work" on climate change while ignoring their massive and utterly unnecessary carbon footprints. Those that don't see the incongruence of celebrities in $10,000s of dollar dresses talking about poverty without addressing inequality and how overconsumption feeds into that. But I digress...

MarginalGain · 22/04/2020 08:27

Grin. You assume this do you?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/04/2020 08:29

Her business is loss making so essentially a very expensive vanity project. She should be the one paying her staff. People need to remember her behaviour when this is over and act accordingly.

This ^

And these people rarely, if ever, pay their taxes to the Inland Revenue - everything is offshore etc.

They can bugger off.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 22/04/2020 08:29

I agree PPE isnt glamerous and I get that totally, however the negative publicity she is getting now would have been totally avoided if she had diversified into it.The publicity of her "doing something to help others in this time of crisis" would have catapulted Brand Beckham into Sainthood status! I am really surprised their publicity machine has missed such a great oppotunity!

TileLane · 22/04/2020 08:29

I see the ’mumsnet lefties’ are still about following the demise of their Comrade Corbyn :)

FOJN · 22/04/2020 08:39

Furloughing 30 staff for 2 months will cost the tax payer £150 000, approximately what the family spent on a birthday party recently and about a tenth of the estimated value of her handbag collection. The furlough cash is small change to her where as it might make the difference between sink or swim for another business. Whether her fashion hobby is used as a tax write off for the family wealth is another question.

I don't envy people wealth but I don't think the government should bail out those with the reserves to cushion themselves.

GoodMorningEveryone · 22/04/2020 08:43

Be Nice latest then?

Regardless of your opinions on her business, some of the personal comments on here are horrible.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/04/2020 08:44

I don't think we should be paying her staff. I said to DH on Sunday she should've been doing PPE.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. We're going to be paying for this for decades. The nurses and other health care workers, who've put their lives at risks, are going to be told that they won't be getting a pay rise and we'll all be paying higher taxes. That won't affect the Beckhams, she'll still have her £1.5m handbag collection and her kids will still have £100k birthday parties.

sanealaddin · 22/04/2020 08:51

If her business was profitable then I would argue that she is as entitled as any other business to claim under the furlough scheme. But it isn't, and they have bailed it out with their own money for years. They should do the same now.

The scheme shouldn't allow for consistently unprofitable businesses to be bailed out by taxpayers money. As a self employed person I'll only be able to claim from the government scheme based on my profits. And I think that's fair.

EdwinaMay · 22/04/2020 08:53

People don't like people like them 'getting above themselves' hence all the nastiness. But they accept already rich people with their estates and villas in the sun. Except for the Royals who are the devil incarnate.

ChateauMargaux · 22/04/2020 08:55

www.amazon.co.uk/Who-Owns-England-Green-Pleasant/dp/0008321671?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 This book is interesting when it talks about the richest people in Britain and whether they actually pay tax in the UK. If they did, things would look a lot different. In fact income from assets held in offshore companies by people who live in the UK (not tax resident), I think we could plug a large hole in the economy created by this lockdown.

ChateauMargaux · 22/04/2020 08:56

That should say, if income from assets held offshore were taxed in the UK...

twirlycat77 · 22/04/2020 08:57

HannahStern What do you mean, I forgot the Y? Confused

Leflic · 22/04/2020 08:57

Surely her business is separate from her personal wealth which is hardly likely to be cash sat around. I wouldnt demand my manager pay me from her savings - not sure why it's different just because VB is richer.

Is your nsnager the owner though? Lots of small business owners use their own money to support themselves! Personal credit cards, remortgaging the house, selling stuff.Doesn’t matter if it’s for paying staff, expanding or weathering a blip.

If your personal wealth exceeds the cost of an entire business ie buildings, capital, staff, fixtures and fittings, planes ...then yes you shouldn’t expect the taxpayer to cover you.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 22/04/2020 08:58

Rich people don't get or stay rich by being other than grasping and selfish. Rich people think they are entitled to be rich. We hear so much about them being wealth creators, about the insane rewards they enjoy being the result of the risks they take, and it's bollocks. VB is no different to the rest of them and if a reduction in the arse kissing of the rich is an effect of this crisis that will at least be a positive thing.

twirlycat77 · 22/04/2020 08:58

But they accept already rich people with their estates and villas in the sun. Except for the Royals who are the devil incarnate.

Rightly so, the royals don’t earn theirs.
