People keep calling her working class, as I understand it she grew up middle class before Spice Girls?

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 09:24

I started a thread about her and Stella McCartney and Virgin the other day and got some well reasoned answers. I did learn that running a business and the money side of things is very complex ( more than I imagined to be fair) and many were quite supportive of them too. However, it was reported V B's company has had problems in the past , so I can see why it makes people angry that the company can claim for the furlough scheme. It quite a complex problem and it's also true that others not well known are probably using the scheme and they too are millionaires. We don't know these ones do they are not fair game for any criticism!

BacklashStarts · 22/04/2020 09:24

A business is a business. If VB isn’t worthy then you bring in an element of judgement and maybe the businesses you like would fall foul of that too. The business isn’t bankrupt (yet) unlike Carluccios and i don’t see people wanting all those employees hung out to dry.

You just don’t like VB and that’s all this thread is about.

BacklashStarts · 22/04/2020 09:26

Also furlough is capped it’s not a bottomless well. Try and think about it as support for the employees not the business. I would want to see all those people unemployed in these circumstances.

MarginalGain · 22/04/2020 09:27

Why isn’t she being made to sell a house first?

Where did you get the idea that anyone has to sell their house to furlough staff under the coronavirus scheme?

showerdodger · 22/04/2020 09:29

It is a complex system & it's normal for business finances to be kept separate from personal finances. However I think any celeb who finds themselves in this position & who sees themselves as a "brand" should be prudent about what they post & show on their social media.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 09:29

I think any company owner with millions of pounds in assets should be using said assets first before getting government help- Branson, Green, VB, all of them.

If you claim benefits you have to have used up whatever paltry savings you have, why should they be any different when getting state help?

twirlycat77 · 22/04/2020 09:29

As long as it is not Victoria Beckham. She is common and has gone above her station

No I don’t think it’s that at all. She just doesn’t endear herself to people. Probably because her and her husband are all about selling themselves and their family for money.Their greed is insatiable. There are other women out there who “got above their station” who are respected and admired.

Alsohuman · 22/04/2020 09:30

Excellent point Crumb.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 09:30

At the very least if time is of an issue they should be made to pay it back after if they clearly don’t need it which VB clearly doesn’t.

MarginalGain · 22/04/2020 09:34

However, it was reported V B's company has had problems in the past , so I can see why it makes people angry that the company can claim for the furlough scheme. It quite a complex problem and it's also true that others not well known are probably using the scheme and they too are millionaires. We don't know these ones do they are not fair game for any criticism!

But this criticism is entirely unmeasured.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, her business is not viable, but she continues to operate, pay suppliers, employ designers, operate storefronts, sell clothes, and get regular cash inflows from her husband.

How is this a problem for the taxpayer? They're missing out on corporation tax, OK, but she's employing people; all of her employees are paying tax; VB is paying payroll related taxes; she's keeping suppliers in business; her customers pay VAT, and so on.

tenlittlecygnets · 22/04/2020 09:39

Her 'business' hasn't made a profit since its launch in 2008. Bonkers.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 09:39

We’re just about to plummet into recession and paying millions out to prop up needy businesses that are actually worthwhile to society. There is no spare cash to prop up any business unnecessarily. She can do all the above without state help. She doesn’t need it. Her children’s school fees alone would probably keep a fair few staff going. Then you get into the ownership of several multi million pound houses and whatever other assets they have stashed away.

It’s shit taking from a struggling economy when you don’t need to.

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 09:40

I can see all sides of the arguments but it's true that if you go to claim benefits and have savings for a house deposit ( for example) over or just near to 16 k then you have to live on that first! Mumsnetters are quick to point this out to people , but then will defend others with millions in the bank because it's a business and their rules are different at this time, not to mention other ' tax dodges' that I'm sure many wealthy people may be able to take advantage of. Not all of them but I bet their accountants are keen to show the way!
No wonder people get angry and confused!
Life can be so unfair and it also shows up the inequalities.

wineandroses1 · 22/04/2020 09:42

Wow so much vitriol. There are a lot of people on this thread who don't understand what the furlough system is for (the employees) and are just resentful and jealous of anyone rich and famous. The Beckhams will have paid a great deal in tax over the years, but that's obviously meaningless to people who envy their wealth.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 09:45

And as for the way the rich and wealthy run off to their mansions in the country when the rest of us are stuck where we are (many without gardens) and can’t even eat a packet of crisps in a park without being lambasted.Hmm I see Gordon Ramsay is allowed to move out to his multi million bolt hole, cycle miles round the countryside unhindered to now empty beaches and use tax payers money to prop up his business too.

It isn’t fair.if you have assets they should be used first.

pinkblanchmange · 22/04/2020 09:45

What Crumb said

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 09:48

Well yes I am jealous I can’t go to my local beach 5 miles away but the rich can decamp miles away and carry in enjoying the countryside unhindered.

It’s not about jealousy as regards wealth it’s about seeing greed and abuse of the system in a time when others far less well off are having to go above and beyond. There also seems to be a very two sided system.

showerdodger · 22/04/2020 09:49

Unfortunately it's how business works so all you can do is vote with your purse, don't eat in Gordon Ramsey restaurants, don't buy the books & watch the tv shows. Don't follow VB on social media or read articles about her etc

Laaf80 · 22/04/2020 09:55

I find it sad.

Before furlough was announced many small business owners on MN were talking about getting loans, not taking salaries, remortgaging so that they could meet the staff bill.

Some MN landlords have taken rent hits to keep tenants.

Yet VC and people like her can spend 100k on a birthday party one month then not be expected to at least try to help their staff themselves the next.

Yet people go nuts when those claiming benefits have a 32” TV and a goat.

Amazing. Socialism for the rich.

kateandme · 22/04/2020 09:55

basically everyone doesnt like and has a real dig in at certain celbs.megan.the beckhams, whenever these people are seen to be doing wrong we want to hang them.i dont know what it is maybe jealousy?but as soon as we can we love to stand at their giltines.but there are thousands of others doing this and we ignore them why?
and we actually have no iodea what they are doing.
what i do know is as a couple and as a charity and ambassadors they do an awful lot of good.raise lots of money and give money.all ive seen is them trying to be good people.
but as with certain other alists mn has a real ax to grind when the beckhams come up.and will go on to get really riled and angry when people try to tell them this.and continue to need to fight with anyone so we can see how horrid the beckhams are!

Laaf80 · 22/04/2020 10:03

I’m not jealous of such people. I’d like to know what it’s like to live without any money problems whatsoever and give the best possible start for my children. But I’m not jealous, and do not feel they should reduce themselves to a 1 bed council flat to keep their staff on.

However, I’m sad and angry at the inequality. It’s debatable how much tax these people pay, % wise it’s quite possible that average earners pay more.

Would it be so difficult to sell an antique vase or something to cover the salaries? Or to use interest from deposits to cover staff bill?

Re charity work, I think some rich people do this to reduce their tax liability anyway. I know an old employer used to do this.

pinkblanchmange · 22/04/2020 10:10

The leaked emails from Beckham gave an insight into what the charity work was really about

NailsNeedDoing · 22/04/2020 10:10

I don’t see the problem with this. Presumably she’s paid any tax owed and so have her employees, therefore, her employees deserve the same support from the government as anyone else in their position. A government is there to support all of its citizens, not only the poor ones.

Oakmaiden · 22/04/2020 10:11

Why should taxpayers subsidise her vanity project?

Look at it a different way. The taxpayer is supporting her employees so that instead of losing their jobs they can continue to receive a portion of their pay while they are not needed in work.

The furlough scheme is about the employees, not the employer.
