She doesn’t need support. We’re in the middle of a pandemic and the gov is shovelling snow in a snowstorm. It shouldn’t be supporting those who don’t need it and who are taking just because they can.

It’s shit.

Viviennemary · 22/04/2020 10:12

I think it's scandalous. So selfish and greedy but not surprising.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 10:13

VB can pay her employees. That is the whole point. She is instead choosing to take money from a cash strapped struggling country simply because she can.

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 10:14

I'm not jealous of any celebrity business owner : it must be nice not to have to worry about money, but nothing comes without a trade off in life and I'd rather be poor and able to go about my life without all the criticism they get even if a lot of it is self inflicted at times to big up their 'brand' or whatever, It still must be horrible to live in a goldfish bowl ! The anonymous millionaires must be in a much better place!

FOJN · 22/04/2020 10:21

The80sweregreat
I agree this is an issue of inequality. If you needed nursing home care and owned a house on your own you would have to sell it to pay for the cost of your care.
As many people have already pointed out the VB fashion brand has never made a profit which presumably means she has never paid corporation tax for the business but would now like to receive state support to pay her staff a month after buying a £17 million property in Malibu.
Surely it's obvious people are annoyed with the injustice of that rather than criticism being motivate by jealousy.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 10:25

The Beckhams bought a £20 million pound Miami mansion in March( last month), to go with the rest of their million pound portfolio. Their family wealth is £335 million. The culture secretary said the furlough scheme should only be used if absolutely necessary.

Make of that what you will.

FredAstaireAteMyHamSandwich · 22/04/2020 10:30

People just like to hate VB. How about the likes of Cameron Mackintosh? Worth £1.4 billion. Has 7 houses , a farm and a yacht. Furloughed most of his staff, and the few that are holding the business together have had pay cut by 15/20%. Yet he still thinks it’s ok to charge £200 for a seat to see Hamilton. He is charging £9.99 to download the Les Mis show on amazon or sky. He is giving £5 for each one sold out of his charitable foundation to charity, NOT his own pocket. After the retailers cut, if he is making £3 per download, if 3 million download it worldwide that’s a profit of nearly £10 million. And he wants the taxpayer to pay for his staff? VB is small-fry compared to him.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 10:38

Have to say it does make me a tad worried about the government vetting process for the furlough scheme. If they clearly turn a blind eye to it being used when not absolutely necessary perfectly legally with no admonishment how on earth are they best placed or equipped to keep an eye on actual fraudsters at all levels who will try it on.

We as a country are going to be paying it back for years. Our children’s future(children of the non rich and famous obviously) is going to be heavily impacted. It is hugely worrying.

Crumb2Everywhere · 22/04/2020 10:40

I think others are getting away with it without scorn and anger as their lifestyle doesn’t sell their product. The Beckhams need their lifestyle to be on show to sell. Unfortunately it highlights unfairness, greed and inequalities. You live by the sword....

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 10:41

Oh yes, you have savings or a home pay for things yourself is the cry!
Have a business and assets , you can claim from the government! I'm being simplistic here and I appreciate the furlough scheme is for the employees and not necessarily the employer , but surely a few people's 'brands ' would be enhanced by them doing the right things for a few weeks rather than being seen as greedy and money grabbing etc. It won't be forever.
Plus a few people will take full advantage of this scheme and still make people work as well. It's open to a certain amount of fraud unfortunately but then nothing in life is perfect. Such a tough situation all round!
I just hope people are fair. I do live in hope!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 22/04/2020 10:41

Many self employed/employed people won’t have paid much tax or have already been claiming benefits on top already negating any tax paid, why is that different to companies tax bills?

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/04/2020 10:47

The idea behind business owners accumulating huge wealth is that it's a just reward for their "risk taking". To my mind, that doesn't include having a government bail-out as a safety net if things go wrong.

NailsNeedDoing · 22/04/2020 10:54

Theres a slight difference between things going wrong because of bad business decisions and things going wrong because of a deathly virus taking over the world and governments ordering businesses to close.

The government safety net should absolutely be there to bail out tax paying businesses and employees in this situation. That doesn’t mean I think they should be there for every business that struggles in normal times.

Jaxhog · 22/04/2020 10:59

I think a lot of businesses will see a negative consumer backlash for what the public see as greedy behaviour. You reap what you sow.

woodchuck99 · 22/04/2020 11:00

I think people remember that she did this. The furlough scheme is designed to stop normally profitable businesses going under because of the pandemic because that would damage the economy. The business isn't normally profitable and it is subsidised by David Beckham's fortune. Using taxpayers money to subsidise it instead with outrageous.

woodchuck99 · 22/04/2020 11:00

with is

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 11:01

I'm pleased that V B's employees won't be out of a job. This is a good thing. It's just the fact they will use taxpayer's money to do it that will annoy people the most whatever the rights and wrongs or the rules in place etc etc.
More examples of inequalities that will make the public start kicking back against these measures I think! That's the thing I'm more concerned about.

YappityYapYap · 22/04/2020 11:03

The taxpayer is basically paying to keep her hobby going. It's not a viable business, it makes a loss every single year

Alsohuman · 22/04/2020 11:05

Ultimately her business will either go under or need even bigger injections of David’s money as a result of this. People won’t forgive or forget this greed. Whoever advised it was obviously a shortsighted accountant rather than a PR taking a longer view.

Roussette · 22/04/2020 11:08

I bet... at a time like this.. VB wishes she hadn't been so 'out there' with her publicity desperate Brand Beckham. It was obvious, just obvious, this was going to get reported on. Whether it's right or wrong, you can't have it all ways and she should not be bleating what a horrible week she's had and saying she's foregone her own salary.

She doesn't need a salary!

I do think... if it had been a profitable company employing lots of staff, and paying lots of corporation tax... fair enough.

She said '‘We are working hard to ensure our much-valued VB team are protected by keeping our business healthy'.
It's never been healthy!
It's a hobby she won't give up and she could have stood the cost of 25 staff for a while.

Biscuitsdisappear · 22/04/2020 11:09

The bottom line for me is that the company must be making a profit and be paying UK taxes. Very nice of Mr Branson to offer up collateral but we'll also have 7 years back taxes to show good faith and good intentions for the future.

CathyorClaire · 22/04/2020 11:24

DB told her a while back when her hobby was impacting brand Beckham's profits he wasn't bailing her out any more. She then had a massive cash injection from investors and still turned in a £12m loss in the last accounts. She has never turned a profit.

There should be some sort of check and balance applied to this sceme because propping up a zombie business is not in the taxpayer's remit. It's a scandal in the making.

CathyorClaire · 22/04/2020 11:25

scheme

SybillaB · 22/04/2020 11:36

Prince Charles has also furloughed staff.

The80sweregreat · 22/04/2020 11:43

Prince Charles is also using tax payers money? This does not surprise me either!
They are all at it. Yet happen to have a big tv and claim UC or working tax credits and your the devil incarnate.
