What happened to the letters the government were writing to every household?

About 10 days ago I thought it was announced that the government was writing to every household in the country to reiterate the advice regarding CV

I thought it seemed a waste of time and money as you’d have to be living in a bunker to have not heard to before but that’s beside the point

Did anyone actually receive this letter?

My mum, in her 80s listens to the news but has no internet access and doesn't get a paper. She only found out about lockdown because I phoned her and told her to watch PM's announcement. She phoned up some friends of a similar age and they knew nothing about it. It's not like they have to wfh or provide child care, so it had mosly passed them by.

If she listens to the news how didn't she know, there doesn't seem to be anything else on the news.

While I am no fan of this government, I do actually support them doing this. There is still about 7.5% of the population who have never used the internet (not don't have access to it, have never used it). The proportion of internet non-users is highest amongst the over 75s and the disabled, i.e. groups who are most at risk from covid-19.

Yep, I support this too. The news goes too fast for my grandmother to keep up with the advice and she doesn't use the internet. Normally that's not a problem as family can explain it but even this contact is limited now. The letter was reassuring for her that she had the info she needed to stay safe.

@1forsorrow

She didn't know about the lockdown because it hadn't been announced Confused. She might have picked it up on the news in the following days but seeing the PM behind a desk on the TV definitely made more of an impression on her. Up until then she had been going about as normal.

While she doesn't have dementia, like many people in their 80s her short term memory is not as good as it was. She won't necessarily remember the details of everything she hears on the radio. Having the guidance wriiten in a leaflet is useful for her.

So she didn't know there was a lockdown until there was a lockdown but really useful getting a letter to tell her there is a lockdown 2 weeks later.

Clear as mud.

What a ridiculous waste of money.

I do not live in the UK and I didn't know about this.

It sounds like a complete and utter waste of money that could have been put to a more useful resource.

i live in a 3rd world country and there are ways and means of getting the information out there.

I got mine at least a week ago but I'm sure it depends on the resources of individual post office regions.

I initially thought it was a waste of paper but heard on the news yesterday that 10% of the population don't use the internet, don't know how many of those don't access news at all but apparently there are people who don't know about the lockdown. If even a few of them read the letter it might protect more of us.
