I have to add I don't think we locked down too late.

If you don't, compare projections for the UK, with how it was for Spain. Note the pink horizontal line.

Which study is that from pls Lweji?

I really feel am saddened by the news re the Dr. I wanted Johnson to be ok but it’s a weird flip flop emotions.

BertNErnie · 09/04/2020 19:59

I really hope he comes out of this and realises that he owes his life to the NHS who are completely underfunded and makes some serious changes to the way they are funded and the complete back of regard for public sector workers.

I wonder if in hindsight he wishes he could take back his vote to block the scrapping of the 1% cap on pay rises for public sector workers and better funding emergency services?

Id love for him to come out and literally say it was the worse experience of his life and we need to all stay the feck at home and double the pay of low paid NHS staff.

Lack of, not back of!

I linked that the other day (without reading it in full) pp questioned the 799 available ICU beds here in U.K. Idk the figures but other posters had higher numbers now we have higher capacity. Maybe they’ll post some more on it.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/04/2020 20:13

I think when we’ve deconstructed this after the view is undoubtedly going to be that we didn’t act quickly enough. And the deaths of a awful lot of people could have been avoided if we’d made that decision earlier.

We ignored not only the info from China but also from Italy and Spain.

Lweji · 09/04/2020 20:16

I can have my own view.

I hope you're not in research or involved in covid control if you think your personal view is as important as those based on data.

CendrillonSings · 09/04/2020 20:32

Lweji

Can't shake off the feeling that the wrong person died.

What a deeply shitty thing to say.

If anyone thinks our data is worth diddly squat...hahahahaha!
There is no earnest testing going on. We have shit data. Nothing much will be gleaned from "oh look, these people in hospital had it. Some of them died" - particularly when it comes to trying to get out of lockdown and knowing where the virus is still active.

MissEliza · 09/04/2020 20:59

@Lweji what an awful thing to say. Shame on you.

Tonyaster · 09/04/2020 21:04

@Lweji

What a breathtakingly horrible thing to say. Shame.

Quartz2208 · 09/04/2020 21:22

@lweji I have looked at those and I cant see why on earth the UK would need a minimum of 100k beds to Spains 32k - what is difference that it would need 3 times as many beds.

And those graphs are misleading on a glance because it looks like Spain has far more ventilators whereas it 30k (Spain) to 20K UK it just for some reason the above has changed the bit on the side.

I have looked and it has UK needing more beds than that US. Its data on the UK looks seriously off as it happens unless there is something we dont know because at the moment we do not look like we are heading for more deaths and beds needed than the US

Quartz2208 · 09/04/2020 21:26

I have looked up their predictions as well - they are pretty accurate for Portugal that is it.

Lweji · 09/04/2020 21:37

What a deeply shitty thing to say.

I think it's deeply shitty that doctors are dying because fucking politicians didn't secure enough PPE and didn't implement measures on time.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/04/2020 21:39

what is difference that it would need 3 times as many beds.

Spain locked down at an earlier point and much harder than we did and they have a smaller population.

We still have a half arsed lockdown where people think as long as they maintain a 2m distance it’s fine.

Lweji · 09/04/2020 21:39

I hope the projections are wrong and the maximum will be much lower, but even so, it's looking to be bad. Very bad.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/04/2020 21:42

Spain hit their death peak at c 900 deaths a day. We’re at 900 deaths a day and still going up. We’ve probably got up to a week before we hit our peak and the death rate’s still doubling every 4 days.

Tonyaster · 09/04/2020 21:42

Literally don't care what you think @Lweji

vera99 · 09/04/2020 21:43

Good to see his starting to be on the mend. When he finally gets his old irrepressible energy back (the cad!) maybe he can get around to drafting a reply to the letter he was sent a few weeks earlier. But only when he's ready wouldn't want to rush him.

This thread is a great example of why I wouldn't pay 5 a month for this site. Too many posters are unutterably thick.
