Does anyone know whether no further deterioration at this point is likely to be a predictor of whether he will get worse? I mean, is it common that if you are going to end up on a ventilator you will need it within the first 24 or 48 hours after you start to deteriorate, or is just unpredictable?

Trichinella · 07/04/2020 14:36

I don’t think we’re getting the full story. He’s in intensive care on oxygen but not in an active manner, apparently. So not CPAP or the bubble. So why is he in ICU? If he’s on passive O2, surely that could be given in a ward situation.
I think he’s more ill than we’re being told.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 07/04/2020 14:45

@trichinella - Maybe, but my understanding is that the updates are from Number 10 and not from anyone medical...

So, he very well may be on CPAP which is, after all, oxygen..

Inkpaperstars · 07/04/2020 14:47

Number ten are also saying he doesn't have pneumonia

Why should we be getting the whole story?

This is someone's personal medical details.

I feel like some of this is crossing the line from stuff we need to know (that he'd delegated to Raab, that he'll probably be off work for some time, and that there's a significant risk of he won't be returning to work), to just anxiety-fuelled nosiness.

I understand people are anxious and grasping for details to fill the void. But I really don't think we should expect to be told every last detail.

Of course his family may choose to share more than the minimum, but we still shouldn't demand it (unless there's some genuine reason like inquiry into malpractice).

They said he was going to ICU in case he needed to be intubated and ventilated. If you decline suddenly and need to be intubated, you want to be on ICU with the people who are the best at intubation. That would be the ICU doctors.

Peregrina · 07/04/2020 15:09

It's not so much the whole story - after all Johnson's medical details are between him and his medical team - it's just that we have had contradictory stories, so we don't know what to believe.

Trichinella · 07/04/2020 15:25

@DixieFlatline- Ah, I understand now.
And others are right in a way, it’s not really our business. I guess there’s so much uncertainty at the moment, and because he’s Prime Minister people are just looking for something positive.

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2020 17:16

There is a lot of things they do in icu other than ventilation. That’s not what critical care is solely for.

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 07/04/2020 18:02

What else could be going wrong

Peregrina · 07/04/2020 18:17

I suspect he's not all that healthy - very overweight. Likes a drink, which is a euphemism, so he's one of these with underlying conditions. It also seems to affect men more.

housemdwaswrong · 07/04/2020 18:29

It's all smoke and mirrors. He's either ill enough to be in ICU or he isn't. I don't care one way or the other what these reports say because we'll not get the truth regardless. Like going in Sunday evening for routine tests, then ending up in ICU. They weren't routine. Like Raab saying he's sure he'll pull through?? Pull through?? He's only got an oxygen mask/ line, there should be no question of him not pulling through. They're lying one way or the other.

I do wish him well obviously, but they can't tell the truth about anything so following the reports is pointless.

As for it being his personal info, absolutely. So why not just say he's stable, Raab / Cummins is in charge, PM is in good hands. Job done.

Butterymuffin · 07/04/2020 18:44

He's only got an oxygen mask/ line, there should be no question of him not pulling through.

The stats of Covid patients who leave ICU alive or dead in Johnson's age group are 55% alive 45% not. It's some way from there being 'no question' of him pulling through. Reassurance was needed.

(Can't believe I'm defending Raab. Strange times)

housemdwaswrong · 07/04/2020 19:08

That's what I mean. Sorry. Ee know the stats are grim, so why butter it up? It's not making sense. He's fine, he's only on oxygen we expect him to pull through, seem really opposite comments.

Ireasaurance makes sense possibly, I didn't find it reassuring but I can see maybe what's they were aiming for.
On a side note, what's non invasive respiratory support if not oxygen?

shesgrownhorns · 07/04/2020 19:16

Knowing what a narcissistic attention seeking megalomanic Johnson is, he'd have issued some sort of message/statement himself if he was the remotest bit able to.

Don't reckon he's conscious.

FaFoutis · 07/04/2020 19:22

I agree shes.
If he was conscious I would have expected at least a thumbs up photo by now.

Alsohuman · 07/04/2020 19:22

I thought “My goodness, you’re tempting fate” when Raab said that.

vanillandhoney · 07/04/2020 19:28

If he was conscious I would have expected at least a thumbs up photo by now.

Why?

Nobody is entitled to see the poor man in an ICU bed. Leave him be.

FaFoutis · 07/04/2020 19:31

I'm not bothering him. He loves a thumbs up.

vanillandhoney · 07/04/2020 19:33

No, but saying we should get a photograph of him in his hospital bed is just ghoulish. Unconscious or not, the man is clearly very unwell. He deserves his privacy.

FaFoutis · 07/04/2020 19:36

The last thing I want is a photo of the man. For God's sake.

Jilljams · 07/04/2020 19:39

Why do they keep saying he’s in good spirits? What does that even mean? No one who is in ICU with corona is in good spirits, surely?

shesgrownhorns · 07/04/2020 19:42

I think what Fa meant was it is out of character not to have given us a thumbs up....
