AIBU to think China is lying about its data?

Ladyks · 31/03/2020 18:15

Just that really. Noticed on the update that they referenced how China lowered the curve & slowed down the rate of infections & deaths... but I don’t think I’m buying it Confused. What do you think?

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 20:29

I am.
I what way I am disingenuous?

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 20:30

Do you think I am not subject to the same laws by virtue of being an expat?

TulipsInAJug · 31/03/2020 20:30

Because as an expat you will have privileges, including privacy, that Chinese natives do enjoy.

alittleprivacy · 31/03/2020 20:30

Did their strict quarantine measures work to stop the spread of the virus within China?
Yes I believe so.
Do I believe they were completely honest about their infection rate and about how many people died?
Not particularly. It seems quite likely that those figures are not entirely accurate.

TulipsInAJug · 31/03/2020 20:32

The Chinese social credit system, perhaps better described as Big Brother, is well documented.

frankie246 · 31/03/2020 20:33

I personally believe there figures only included the deaths recorded in hospital, not the tens of thousands who died at home.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 20:33

Now that is funny!
China knows everything about me. The point I made is regarding the phone-identity-govt link.

Estimates Show Wuhan Death Toll Far Higher Than Official Figure

The 30 year-old virus whistleblower, who apparently died of the virus, I'm not sure I believe that's how he died.. I wonder if he was punished.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 31/03/2020 20:35

This thread belongs in the coronavirus topic.

Terralee · 31/03/2020 20:46

I wonder if any of the millions of Uyghur people imprisoned in the Chinese concentration camps caught the virus?

Re: North Korea I heard that anyone with the virus was being shot.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 20:57

I thought the shooting in NK related to people trying to escape quarantine.

Durgasarrow · 31/03/2020 21:23

I'm suspicious.

Sunflower20 · 31/03/2020 21:29

My god the vitriol on this thread makes an uncomfortable read.

Stronger76 · 31/03/2020 21:29

@frankie246 indeed our own figures only include people diagnosed with cv in hospital who have died. They do NOT include folk who've been told (by GPs, paramedics etc) that they probably do have it but not been tested who are passing away at home/in care homes etc.

Glenthebattleostrich · 31/03/2020 21:31

Of course they lied. I also believe they lied about the timeline too.

We had dinner with visitors from Wuhan mid November. By the end of November half the people who'd been there were ill with COVID symptoms. 2 ended up with pneumonia.

The videos they sent from Wuhan are barbaric. The lockdown broke many people. Not to mention the number of deaths the government have lied about.

I shouldn't have to say it but, my Chinese friends are wonderful. I have great respect for them, their country and culture. However their government is abhorrent.

TheCanyon · 31/03/2020 21:51

aveMum
My area of concern is North Korea, they’re claiming not to have had a single case so far but given their proximity and trade with China I doubt that’s true, and healthcare in rural regions will be next to non existent. The population there could be devastated by something like this.

My brother runs a north korean charity, the stories I've heard from him and the N.K nationals who escaped who are now his closest friends make me want to curl up and die myself. We sit here worried bout our nan up the road who might no get her cornflakes the morn, these folk have fuck all, nans fucking shot dead for even wondering bout cornflakes. There's fuck all normal with the N.K figures.

EugeniaGrace · 31/03/2020 21:56

The lockdown in Wuhan, with a population of 11 million people, began on 23 January.

The reported deaths on 22 January according to worldometer was 17.

That is a lot of action over 17 deaths.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 22:00

I thought the lockdown stated before 23rd?

I live in Jiangsu and we had rumours on 23rd that the virus was spreading to other provinces. By 26th it was compulsory to wear a mask to access the supermarket and streets were deserted.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 22:04

My mistake, was 23rd.
Seems as though this has been going on forever.

MaxNormal · 31/03/2020 22:19

This thread is disturbing, it's gone really rabid.

DdraigGoch · 31/03/2020 22:43

Of course North Korea haven't had any coronavirus deaths. They shoot anyone who coughs twice as a precaution.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 31/03/2020 22:43

Yeah I think they lied at the start. No idea about now .

The world needs to be involved in investigations into how it started though because if it was preventable we need to make sure it doesn't ever happen again

PlanDeRaccordement · 31/03/2020 23:03

Michael Gove presented the exact same thing today, a flattening of the curve for infections and deaths in the U.K. So was he lying too?
Or not lying because he’s not Chinese?

Or maybe, just maybe lockdown and social distancing actually does slow the spread of a virus both in China and the U.K. because we are all humans facing the same natural disaster?
