Just that really. Noticed on the update that they referenced how China lowered the curve & slowed down the rate of infections & deaths... but I don’t think I’m buying it Confused. What do you think?

Indeed.
My dh is back in China now and told me that quarantine transfer and tests carried out, although time consuming, was a very slick process.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 19:20

What is going on with their domesticated animals now?

What does the dog festival have to do with their virus data?

tegucigalpa13 · 31/03/2020 19:25

The chinese took an incredibly tough approach and incredibly different from the uk in terms of contact tracing......”

An approach they were able to adopt because they are a totalitarian state in which mass surveillance of the population is the norm and where they can impose draconian punishments on transgressors without the inconvenience of an independent judiciary.

Let’s not forget that this started because the Chinese failed to control their wet markets - a known risk.

Let’s not forget that this got a grip because the authorities in Wuhan were so scared of offending the central government that they prosecuted and silenced the doctors who tried to draw attention to the new virus at the end of December.

Absolutely, certain measures were able to be implanted quickly because of the way China works and the systems they have in place.
However, some of the measures could easily been implemented in the uk, but were /are not.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 19:31

Plenty of Chinese have also suffered and lost friends, families and livelihoods - they were innocent too.

PlanDeRaccordement · 31/03/2020 19:33

I’ve reported this thread for racism.

tegucigalpa13 · 31/03/2020 19:34

because of the way China works

....mmmm...”because it is a totalitarian state”

But I appreciate that you and your family live there @shangai so you like all chinese residents have to be VERY careful what you say on social media.

tegucigalpa13 · 31/03/2020 19:36

@PlanDeRaccordement

There is a huge difference between describing the Chinese communist party regime as totalitarian and being racist.

For the record, I work for a Chinese company (online teaching) and my students & their families are so wonderful. Purely questioning the government’s motives, and governments around the world (ours included) clearly a lot of information is not being shared with the public.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 19:39

Yes, because of the state and also on other levels (not to do with the govt) eg living in a city, on a compound which is completely normal, it makes it very easy to limit movement in and out and therefore to manage social distancing.
As a China resident I try to offer a balanced view, shall we say...

peajotter · 31/03/2020 19:40

I think it is likely that they manipulated their data for PR purposes. Not a major cover up, unless anyone has evidence of that. But if you look at their data, particularly the early death rate per day, it is unnaturally smooth compared to other countries. Normally you see many more day to day fluctuations. See the deaths per day here www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/

Interestingly it starts to fluctuate like real data at around 15 feb. Anyone know what happened around then?

MoonBaby1 · 31/03/2020 19:40

Geez?! Racist opportunism anyone? Shock

MamaMary · 31/03/2020 19:41

Saw a nauseating tweet today, a photo of Leo Varadkar on the phone to the Chinese prime minister, congratulating himself on working so closely with the Chinese government and saying how closely Ireland and China are collaborating in Covid research.

Even if the Chinese Covid figures were correct, which they're blatantly not, the optics of being seen to cosy up to a totalitarian regime with an atrocious human rights record are so jarring.

Hi all, we're just reminding you to stick to our Talk Guidelines. While it's understandable to want to discuss government responses to the coronavirus, it is absolutely NOT okay and very much against our Talk Guidelines to make generalisations aimed at groups of people, and countries as a whole. We will delete these posts and you may end up with your account suspended. Please be mindful of our Talk Guidelines when posting.

The Chinese government thought they would never be found out. I am glad countries around the world are beginning to question China.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2020 19:44

Perhaps they manipulated the data to reassure people that measures were working...who knows?
I base my comments on what I or dh have seen or measures that I have been advised of through my compound mgt. what I see happening now suggests it is under control, but clearly I am only commenting on a teeny part of the whole.
