Is the ONS data "weekly" data? As in there have sadly been 103 deaths this week, or cumulative, as in there have been 103 in total?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/03/2020 11:22

I know what you mean, Laniakea. Were we testing as widely as the WHO advises, and as widely as places like South Korea have done, we could maybe get more useful data on infection rate, etc.

QuentinWinters · 31/03/2020 11:58

I think the US is going to struggle compared with Europe due to a very different economy. For example, people working in bars and restaurants make their money from tips, not wages. And the benefits system is different. So I guess people will need to continue to work to live which will hinder social distancing.
Also Trump's pronouncements last week won't have helped at all

FATEdestiny · 31/03/2020 12:11

It's deaths in that week, not cumulative.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/03/2020 12:13

Thanks.

peridito · 31/03/2020 12:20

Laniakea
whereas the guardian suggests differently ... that's why I think obsessing over daily figures is pointless - there are so many backlogs, logjams, delays & much media spin & confusion ... the figures will be verified & come out eventually

absolutely agree .

peridito · 31/03/2020 12:38

@Barracker I'm reposting this link that DuLANG provided .It has detailed mortality figures from hospital trusts so might help ?

www.hsj.co.uk/news/coronavirus-deaths-mapped-east-of-england-fatalities-beginning-to-surge/7027212.article

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 31/03/2020 12:41

Sky news just cut to Nicola Sturgeon live. She was mid sentence, saying something about figures not being accurate at the weekend? Dunno.

Definitely caught the next bit though.

As of 12:40 on Tuesday 31st March:

135 CV19 patients in Scottish ICUs (up 27 on yesterday).

1073 suspected or confirmed cases in hospital across Scotland.

13 more deaths in Scotland (bringing total to 60).

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/03/2020 12:56

@DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG
The figures for testing weren't accurate as one lab couldn't submit over the weekend. This has now been added, hence the spike today.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/03/2020 13:13

Anyone have any knowledge about why Portsmouth trust is so high for deaths? 5th in the country after 4 other trusts in London or West Midlands clusters.

Barracker · 31/03/2020 13:14

peridito BINGO! Thanks

I had already been browsing the hsj site over the last couple of days BUT the granular trust level data simply did not load for me on that page. Now it is loading, and it's downloadable.

Finally, this is the data I wanted to access.
I hope they keep it updated.
I need to fire up my laptop I think.

Is Portsmouth just an older population? Everything suggests age is the main risk factor.

Verily1 · 31/03/2020 13:49

Thanks for the new thread.

Scotland seems more on the trajectory of Japan and not at all like the bigger European countries like Italy Spain and France.

It looks like Scotland will end up with a much lower per capita death than E&W.

Humphriescushion · 31/03/2020 13:54

Sorry to hear that @BirdandSparrow. Hope you ok and hoping for better news soon.

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 31/03/2020 13:54

Having a look through some of the local papers for clues on why Portsmouth seems to be a hotspot. Local Portsmouth paper ‘The News* has the glitchiest website ever.

According to Hampshire Chronicle a Hampshire field hospital is planned.!

www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/18342508.plans-build-field-hospital-chineham-help-covid-crisis-revealed/

I’m v. fond of this are. Especially the IOW hovercraft 😃

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 14:09

Eresh no idea but that my local hospital. My parents are both having chemo there atm and it terrifies me. I've heard locally it's because of high immigrant numbers due to location. Apparently the first 4 recorded deaths were one immigrant family who weren't living in permanent housing. Of course I've heard this from a friend who heard it from their neighbour etc! So who knows how accurate it is?

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 14:12

Hampshire was top of the league tables (so to speak!) for cases for a long time. It's a very accessible area. Lots of commuters into and out of London. People coming from IOw. Airports doing trips to ski resorts. Much older generation in areas of affluence who go on cruises as Southampton accessible. Ferries in and our for ski drive holidays.

Sexnotgender · 31/03/2020 14:13

Scotland seems more on the trajectory of Japan and not at all like the bigger European countries like Italy Spain and France.

We can only hope. We are less densely populated generally here than in England particularly.

Nquartz · 31/03/2020 14:30

@BirdandSparrow hope you're keeping well & as safe as you can be.

I'd like to say a big thank you to those in other countries who are contributing, it's really interesting to hear your perspectives. Also just out of interest, are you brits living abroad or natives?

Stay safe everyone Thanks

Utterlybutterly8 · 31/03/2020 14:39

The figure for those two weeks isn't as horrifying as I suspected. I'd be interested to know how this compares to usual mortality rates in care homes this time of year.

I thought the same (if I've understood the figures right - it's hard to navigate on a phone).

Utterlybutterly8 · 31/03/2020 14:45

Apologies, I retract my previous post - it looks like there were in fact 103 CV deaths outside of hospital during the week that ended 20th March.

Where have the Guardian got 40 from - that figure seems totally wrong? Confused

abitoflight · 31/03/2020 14:51

367 die in England

BREAKING: A further 367 die as England's death toll reaches 1,651.

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 14:54

Sad that's a huge rise. Double the mortalities the past few days.
