I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

Crikey, I thought getting the newspaper was part of my exercise - they're on really low shelving - I have to bend and stretch!

VivaLeBeaver · 25/03/2020 17:02

People on my local fb group said they were stopped outside sainsburys and had their bags inspected by the police who were checking to see if the contents were essential or not.

But the govt haven’t defined essential food......one person would say only basics, others would say chocolate.

I’ve no idea how true it is but more than one person said it had happened.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/03/2020 17:03

But you are allowed out once a day to exercise eg go for a walk?

Jenasaurus · 25/03/2020 17:04

My son has one of these letters too, I wish he didnt as would love him to be forced to stay home. He is an engineer and works in banks so has to go to work all over the country still

Ohffs66 · 25/03/2020 17:04

We are in a hotspot, and last night even though I live on a fairly quiet estate there were police patrolling asking people why they were out. I've been also seen someone say on Facebook today that they were in the car driving to take their dog for a walk in an isolated spot rather than near their house and they were pulled over and told to go home.

WyfOfBathe · 25/03/2020 17:05

@yomellamoHelly

I've just had a text saying we're new rules are in force and we must stay at home. Only to go outside for food, health reasons or work. Nothing on bbc yet

Huh? It's been on the BBC since Monday evening when it was announced? Here's just one of the many articles about it www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52014472

Lordfrontpaw · 25/03/2020 17:06

...Or taking the kids to the park to rip up the daffodils; or go with your mate, your nanny and your toddlers to the park; or go out with your mate and sit outside the closed pub and have a chat; or perch on the side steps of someone’s house (for hours) to use their WiFi; or sit in the park having a picnic with your boyfriend; or sunbathe on Shepherd’s Bush green... oh yes, people are taking this very seriously.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 25/03/2020 17:07

It is good for you that your boss is being sensible. We live in a very rural area yet police are still here stopping people and asking what they are up to.

Bloomburger · 25/03/2020 17:11

DH got one. He's in financial services. I might photograph it and send it to the woman bleating at me that he's not a 'real' key worker.

LightenUpSummer · 25/03/2020 17:11

VivaLeBeaver chocolate is by far my most essential food!

pippong · 25/03/2020 17:12

Weird that. Went to Clapham common today and there were lots of groups. Especially by the exercise areas. People were packed in. They don't care.

adaline · 25/03/2020 17:13

People on my local fb group said they were stopped outside sainsburys and had their bags inspected by the police who were checking to see if the contents were essential or not.

If this is true, who is defining essential?

I mean, surely you can go in for bread and milk and pick up some chocolate at the same time?

DH went to Tesco this morning and they were enforcing "one in, one out", and had tape around to mark the distance you had to keep apart from others. But no police and nobody inspecting bags, though there are police out and about stopping cars.

Oh, on Facebook..... must be true then.
Govt Minister specifically said on Radio 4 yesterday it was ok to drive to an isolated spot to exercise, in response to a direct question...

yomellamoHelly · 25/03/2020 17:14

It's changed though, hasn't it. Before we were allowed out for exercise. That seems to have been dropped.

Belindabelle · 25/03/2020 17:15

DS's employer (Scottish Power) sent them all emails on Tuesday to show to the police to prove they were key workers.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 25/03/2020 17:15

A police car slowly passed me yesterday and today on my early morning run - never usually see them round here. They’re definitely going to start telling people off soon if they’re not complying I think - problem is, as long as exercising is allowed most people will just say they’re doing their daily walk/run? Even if they’ve already been out. People are just going to lie.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 17:16

It hasn’t changed, you’ve just got your text later than most. It states health reasons which includes exercise. The text is just to alert everyone to Monday’s update

Friendsofmine · 25/03/2020 17:16

They have just said if you can choose to do it, don't do it, as it's not essential.

I think that buying a newspaper is a perfect example of non essential.

JellyfishandShells · 25/03/2020 17:17

If the Police keep seeing people loitering around with newspapers

Conjures up such an unlikely image ! Slightly spy thriller, when the Top Secret documents, are hidden within a copy of the Times, to be deftly passed to the agent ( may have been listening to a play on R4 today.....)

My DH bought a newspaper today , when he did our shopping. I’ll ask him about his loitering skills.

pontiouspilates · 25/03/2020 17:18

Same here

caz114 · 25/03/2020 17:18

Looks like we might be going the way of France then and having papers to state why we are out.

Make sure you look after them- it'll be an incredible piece of history when this is all over

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 17:19

Still allowed to exercise once a day

Just got a letter to show the police when out
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/03/2020 17:20

The Prime Minister has just again included exercise as one of the reasons you can go out (briefing TV now) - in fact he said it it important to exercise. I have no idea how this can be policed however

RiftGibbon · 25/03/2020 17:20

If we banned newspapers then things would be even more difficult when there's no toilet rolls in the shops!

Friendsofmine · 25/03/2020 17:21

Going for a walk is exercise.

Getting food is essential.

Walking to the local shop just to buy a paper is not essential.
