I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

They can't issue fines until the bill is passed tOmorrow, appeal them they are illegal....

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 25/03/2020 16:44

Newsagents are on the list of shops permitted to open for a reason. If you take a walk (your daily exercise) to buy one, that is not against the rules.

I don't believe anyone has been fined for buying a newspaper.

Are you saying a careworker(s) told you so it must be true? GrinGrinGrin

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 16:45

Could they not be walking to that shop as part of their daily exercise?

Kingcole · 25/03/2020 16:46

They are now giving out fines!!

Kingcole · 25/03/2020 16:47

I don't bloody know! I haven't been out for days but Police are now taking stronger action as anyone out on street meandering around could say I'm out for a walk buying the Daily Fail.

Rosehip10 · 25/03/2020 16:48

No-one has been fined for buying a newspaper/visiting a newsagent unless it is very recently today as the legislation has only just been approved by Parliament!

Haffiana · 25/03/2020 16:48

They are now giving out fines!!

Prove it!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 25/03/2020 16:48

Proof or it didnt happen because theres plenty of bollocks being spouted on here lately

frasersmummy · 25/03/2020 16:49

So go for walk, buy a newspaper.. Illegal
But go for walk, but a newspaper and 2 tins of soup you don't need.. Depriving someone who may need it.. Legal

Aye ok🙄

TheQueef · 25/03/2020 16:49

It's just passed the Lord's today.

KonTikki · 25/03/2020 16:50

You can walk or drive to your local Newsagents and buy a newspaper.
You will not be fined.
The Bollux people spout on here !

Nicknacky · 25/03/2020 16:53

People are not receiving fines for buying a paper ffs.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 16:54

It says it wont be passed until thursday

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 16:55

No one has been fined yet! The bill has only just been passed “The bill has cleared the House of Lords, and will become law shortly.“

Only after this will the police have the powers to fine, and BJ has already stated the preference will be to send people home in the first instance 🤦‍♀️

Friendsofmine · 25/03/2020 16:55

Buying a newspaper isn't essential though is it?

Surely that isn't the same as going out once a day for a walk where you avoid all people and once a week for food.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/03/2020 16:56

DS girlfriend got one.

She works for a pharmaceutical company as a chemist/analyst.

Hers says she is "mission critical" I think she should frame it afterwards!!

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 16:57

I thought the legislation wasn't through so they could fine people, a Chief Constable on the TV said at the moment they are just advising people but they will get the powers to fine soon.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 25/03/2020 16:58

They can't issue fines until the bill is passed tOmorrow, appeal them they are illegal....
Hasn't the bill been passed by both the House of Commons and House of Lords today?

Yesterdayforgotten · 25/03/2020 16:59

I haven't seen one police person or car in my area, I suppose they are too busy with more pressing matters. I assume there will be more of a presence in the more affected parts of the uk. Very few cases in my area so that may be why they arent around.

Dontunderestimateme · 25/03/2020 17:00

The police don't have any powers to enforce this as yet. How on earth can they be giving out fines?

Breadandroses1 · 25/03/2020 17:00

I'm a key worker (central govt) and we've been told we'll be issued with letters. I think it's just to support if people do get stopped.

Kingcole · 25/03/2020 17:01

If the Police keep seeing people loitering around with newspapers or saying I'm getting a newspaper then yes they deserve to be fined. The Police will be handing out lots of fines I'm sure.

yomellamoHelly · 25/03/2020 17:01

I've just had a text saying we're new rules are in force and we must stay at home. Only to go outside for food, health reasons or work. Nothing on bbc yet

adaline · 25/03/2020 17:02

Police have been doing checks here (Cumbria) to see why people are out and about. At the moment they're just asking and checking, but I think it's just to make peoples' lives easier.
