I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

It's really quite simple - if there were a serial killer on the loose in your town would you then consider your trip out essential? Trying to bend the rules to pop out for a newspaper or third dog walk of the day is beyond selfish.
Some of us have to go out to work - I don't want to, I wish I had the luxury of staying inside to protect my health.

Queeftastic · 26/03/2020 18:04

Horse care: I am told that there's a letter you can print off from the BHS online to show Police. If you can, consider carrying the horse's passport as well to reinforce.

Horses have a passport - that's something new. Is it blue?

amazedmummy · 26/03/2020 18:08

I also have a letter to prove my key worker status. I'm on maternity leave.

NothingIsWrong · 26/03/2020 18:12

I have just been writing letters for one of our contractors so they can give to their staff. I have been told by HR that my staff ID should suffice for me...

Thesnacklady · 26/03/2020 21:00

Maybe they just ran out of toilet paper and were desperate? Grin

Autumnwindinthewillows · 26/03/2020 21:14

Friend lives in a rural area and has to drive to shop. How will they police that when you have to visit multiple shops to get bread, milk eggs & vegetables because most shops are sold out

daisypond · 26/03/2020 21:16

I’m having to do without bread, milk and eggs. I can’t get hold of them. I can get veg. I’m in a city.

spacepoppers · 26/03/2020 21:25

why are so many people laminating these letters? There's enough plastic on this planet!

PestyMachtubernahme · 26/03/2020 21:29

People are laminating these letters because it often rains in this country.

Elephantscantfly · 26/03/2020 21:41

We have a letter to show and also have to show our ID badge, I haven’t read the whole thread but I’m in a secondary school in Wakes, this has been issued to all Key workers in the LA with strict guidelines about not using the letter to abuse the rules about movement!

Elephantscantfly · 26/03/2020 21:42

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales, not Wakes!

vera99 · 26/03/2020 21:44

Print out a ten-page AIBU thread from Mumsnet and wave it in front of a coper when driving for your woodlands stroll. That should do it.

ChippyMinton · 26/03/2020 21:55

I sent letters to our contractors today confirming their staff are critical to our local authority covid19 response. Some idiots have been shouting abuse at them from their houses and vehicles, because they are out working . Yes, keeping the streets safe for you, twats.

PestyMachtubernahme · 26/03/2020 22:07

@vera99 I have a 4 page email string between me and council. It ends with the leader of the council saying I am a carer.
It goes via Tanya saying she can't imagine why any carer would require ID and escalates quickly. The lady I care for was laughing loudly reading it, but any busy policeman would be less than impressed.

ragged · 26/03/2020 22:17

Every single bus I see here is totally empty.

ALongHardWinter · 26/03/2020 22:20

Just makes wonder why newspapers are being sold if you're going to get fined for buying one! I bought one today mainly to fill me in on what's happening out there (my TV is not working any more Sad) while I was in the shop picking up toilet rolls and milk. Surely it's not going to come to the point where you have to justify everything you buy?

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 22:20

There is a video doing the rounds on twitter of the police filming and shaming walkers in the Peak District. These walkers are observing social distancing guidelines and the government have made clear that there is no issue with driving elsewhere to exercise.

Then we have this tweet from the Metropolitan Police:

"Some of us nerdy cops feel like kids at Christmas when there's new legislation to play with. Soooo what powers of detention do I now have under The Public Health (Coronavirus) Regulations 2020 Wink?

Why do we have police forces exceeding their powers? Because a large number will get a kick out of the opportunity this situation provides to harass and bully members of the public.

We should be very concerned about the impact this is going to have on our civil liberties in the long-term.

Ridiculous that the police are doing this. Those walkers could live in heavily populated areas of Sheffield where it is much harder to social distance if a lot of people walk in the same area at the same time so they're actually reducing the risk of transmitting infection.

AirPie · 27/03/2020 04:52

My daughter delivers newspapers - she has been told to keep working and has a letter to show she is a key worker. Newsagents are on the list of shops allowed to stay open. Journalists and broadcasters are also on the essential workers list. Surely it is vital that people stay informed - whether that’s through TV, radio, print media or online? Many people get their news from newspapers (whatever you might think of the quality of some of those publications) and it means more people are aware of the situation - which changes every day. Why would anyone want to ban newspapers - we live in a democracy!!

Rowgtfc72 · 27/03/2020 05:21

Got my keyworker letter yesterday as did dh. We work in factories. I have no proper id like passport or driving licence and bike alone to work at 5am so would be a little worried to find police stopping me.

Lockdownshockdown · 27/03/2020 05:44

@AirPie it weird you say that and that your dd is classed as a key worker and and that newspaper are key work.

Because someone on here claimed that 'someone I know got fined for going out for a newspaper' as it wasnt classed as an essential. Said poster kept insisting it was true. Because she knows someone and wouldnt accept it was bullshit.

That was the point made, news is classed as key work.

The same thread said the chocolate aisle was closed in the supermarkets as well Grin

Branster · 27/03/2020 06:59

The sooner people are not allowed to go out for this bloody daily exercise, the better it will be because a small proportion of the population doesn’t follow the rules or doesn’t understand the rules or lacks common sense.
The government isn’t going to say ‘don’t go out simply to buy the paper’ because that would be catastrophic to the newspapers. It’s a non essential item ffs. Yes, you can buy it as part of your essential shopping trip just like you can buy 10 tubs of non essential ice team as part of your shopping trip along with the actual essentials (actual nourishing food and medicine).
The more you go to the shops, even to a small out in the sticks newsagent where there’s one customer every 3 hours, the more you risk spread the virus from yourself to the world and the more you risk catching it from other people and the environment.

Yes cause that will help. A nation of unfit people who only every move more than 20 feet, if they are going to the supermarket. And a nation where MH issues go through the roof.

Has any European country locked down to the point you can not go for a walk?

It doesnt matter what the rules were. People who dont want to follow them, twist it so it fits or dont understand, will still be the same.

Lockdownshockdown · 27/03/2020 07:07

It’s a non essential item ffs.

Its clearly not, if a paper route is classed as key work.
