I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

Lots of stories like this on my local FB group too but no proof as such.

Few people saying they’ve bought hair dye as part of their shopping and its put aside as classed as non-essential. Also few other saying they were stopped by police and asked for receipts if they were at shops, if they were on their way home they were apparently to email the receipt within 24hrs or face a fine Hmm

I went to the shop for milk the other day and as I was queuing I noticed the dairy milk beside me was on offer so picked one up. Chocolate is an essential in my eyes Grin

MiracletoCome · 25/03/2020 18:43

But I am only going to the supermarket once a week, in fact I needn’t go then for the next 2 weeks as I have 2 Tesco slots booked

RedRedScab · 25/03/2020 18:46

It is bad to just go out and buy a newspaper because you are increasing the risk for those that serve you at the shop and those that they come into contact with. Exercise means exercise, not going to the shop on your way. If you are going to shop it should be for food and that should happen as little as possible, preferably at the most once a week. I don't know why people fail to understand what stay at home means.

Thank goodness somebody else gets it @Rubyroost!

MiracletoCome · 25/03/2020 18:46

Often in supermarkets now you are asked if you want the receipt so many may not have one to show

feellikeanalien · 25/03/2020 18:47

If the police go mob handed to arrest a mum for offending someone on Twitter then I would imagine that fining people for buying newspapers would be right up their street.

It will be interesting to see how they act over the next few months with all these extra powers.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/03/2020 18:48

Well they need to close all the newsagents and compensate them if we're not allowed to use them. Maybe stop printing newspapers and have done with it.

Maybe they also need to start inspecting people's fridges and cupboards to judge whether it's essential to go to the shops, rather than eating that out of date Christmas pudding and tin of soup in a flavour that no-one likes?

ListeningQuietly · 25/03/2020 18:49

For many elderly, frail people, the walk to the paper shop IS THEIR EXERCISE

ListeningQuietly · 25/03/2020 18:50

Some forces are doing it, some are not
As the legislation has not been passed, they are breaking the law if they are ....

MinesAPintOfTea · 25/03/2020 18:52

@Scruffyoak no - everyone should leave the chocolate for me Wink

maryboleyn · 25/03/2020 18:56

We haven't been given anything. We were told we could find ID badge on our work mobile handset but not a single colleague I've spoken to locate it. Confused

ClaudiaWankleman · 25/03/2020 18:57

I'd like to see some evidence for people being fined for buying a newspaper, or officers inspecting food to determine whether it is essential.

Of course we won't see any, as none of this has happened today.

theresthepurpleline · 25/03/2020 18:57

I've been issued with a letter. I am a Samaritan.

GrolliffetheDragon · 25/03/2020 18:59

My family have been self-isolating for the best part of two weeks now, so obviously haven't been to any shops and haven't any shopping brought to us at all. I didn't panic buy, so we're running low on food now. I believe most shops are severely restricting how much of anything you can buy, so I don't see how I can get a weeks shopping in one go.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 19:00

Besides chocolate releases endorphins so it’s good for your mental well being. I’m using the going out for health reasons if I get stopped 😂😂

Clymene · 25/03/2020 19:00

Bloody hell this thread is full of more bullshit than your average teenager who hasn't done their homework

PepePig · 25/03/2020 19:01

If you're going out just to buy a sodding newspaper, you're inherently selfish and I hope you are fined.

Imagine putting lives at risk over getting the Daily Mail. Absolutely not necessary.

wobytide · 25/03/2020 19:02

Companies and organisations are issuing the letters as a stricter lockdown is coming soon. All the key organisations have been told in meetings today I believe by Gold command or whatever the equivalent of COBRA is for the public sector. I imagine the army will be the enforcers rather than the police

ListeningQuietly · 25/03/2020 19:07

On what grounds ?
The Covid legislation is currently going through Parliament.
After it finishes, Parliament goes into recess.
So no more legislation can be passed until late April.
Or do you think that Boris plans to bring in a military state over Easter ?

MiracletoCome · 25/03/2020 19:07

So is it just the key worker jobs getting letters not all those non essential jobs that are still open because people can’t wfh

SouthCoastShell · 25/03/2020 19:10

I received my letter yesterday showing I'm a 'key worker's was told it's mainly if I get questioned why I'm using public transport.

exLtEveDallas · 25/03/2020 19:14

I drive past an off licence on my way home from work...there was a queue of about 10 blokes, all stood about 6 ft apart. I also drove past our local PCSOs - and they didn’t seem to have an issue with the non-essential booze buyers!

oakthorn · 25/03/2020 19:14

My team are being issued with key worker letters . Highway maintenance.

Cherrysoup · 25/03/2020 19:25

Given the amount of people I saw when out for my essential thing today, I reckon much stronger measures are on their way. People are treating this like a holiday. In France and Italy, you need a permit to say where you’re going and why. You’re also told to be no more than 400m from home, I think.

Cherrysoup · 25/03/2020 19:26

^^ Thats for your daily exercise, I mean, obviously not for shopping.

JellyfishandShells · 25/03/2020 19:30

Essential food shopping - and then they add off licences to the list of shops allowed to remain open. No sense to that at all.
