I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

My 86 yo mother caught a bus and went to Morrisons to buy cat treats today!

Friendsofmine · 25/03/2020 17:22

If you have the virus and pass it on whilst buying your paper shame on you.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 25/03/2020 17:23

Maybe they should stop printing newspapers, then it wouldn’t be a problem

Pippitypong · 25/03/2020 17:25

How would you prove you were on your way to the supermarket?

mum2jakie · 25/03/2020 17:28

Husband given one today. Some of our workforce are still needed to go out but we haven't been asked to supply letters for them yet?

I live down a narrow lane about half a mile from the sea. All the local camp sites and the beach car parks have shut to discourage people from visiting.

There's a 10-foot-wide grass verge about a hundred metres from my house and in the last hour two camper vans with four young guys have set up camp there – table and chairs out – because they want to go surfing (this isn't a surfing beach) and then stay for the night. They were blasting music. I've been out to have a look, took photos of their registration numbers and then told them they have ten minutes to pack up and leave. Got a load of lip including 'boomer' insults (I'm not even a boomer) but they've gone.

This is going to be a long, hard spring/ summer if the good weather keeps up. Unless there's total lockdown every patch of grass within hitting distance of a beach or a beauty spot is going to become an impromptu camp ground.

For every boomer behaving like an arse, there's a boomer trying to get millennials to stick to the rules.

Newspapers are essential for people who are not online and don't have a TV or radio.

There are plenty of people out there whose only form of media is the daily paper.

Scruffyoak · 25/03/2020 17:31

I dont have one?

dimotikopp · 25/03/2020 17:31

Here in Cyprus we have to text a certain number to get permission to leave the house-you have to give your reason for leaving the house:

Doctor visit 1 pharmacy visit
2 shopping for necessary food stuffs
3 bank stuff (that you can’t do online)
4 gov office
5 helping other people who can’t help themselves
6 dog walk/exercise
7 funeral/wedding/christening (only up to 10 people allowed)
8 whatever other reason
You also have to give your id number and your postcode-so you don't have people driving all over the island for their "essential shopping"
This was launched yesterday, and the phone line crashed half an hour later!

Devlesko · 25/03/2020 17:32

We bought 2 newspapers for our older neighbours today, from the supermarket during our shop. No problem, except dh put on another pair of gloves, I asked why he was being extra vigilant.
He said he wasn't but didn't want to touch the DM or Express. Grin

GemmeFatale · 25/03/2020 17:32

Newspapers are protected as essential services under the communications bit I think. Fine for us lot on the internet to do without but Ethel, age 96, has lost enough this week without us taking her wee dram at night and newspaper in the morning (dropped by a helpful volunteer of course).

OkPedro · 25/03/2020 17:35

I can’t stop laughing at “people with newspapers loitering” ffs 😂😂

Justginnoschweppes · 25/03/2020 17:35

My neighbour was pulled over by the police yesterday and asked where she had been. She was asked to produce her shopping receipt.

lazyarse123 · 25/03/2020 17:37

The issue I have is that I work in a shop and the number of people that have bought just a newspaper is astonishing. Fine get your exercise but please don't risk my life because you want something to read. Watch the news ffs.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 25/03/2020 17:41

If it's the case that I've driven to a supermarket (no local shops) to buy bread, milk, veg, etc but I'm not allowed to buy chocolate (or more importantly, alcohol) in the same trip then the supermarkets need to remove those products or block those aisles off. With no definition of essentials and non-essentials openly available, it's a ridiculous situation!

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 17:41

Firstly I don’t think people should be going out just to buy a newspaper, however a lot of the older generations do rely on them for news. They should probably be having them delivered

However I no longer know how much food is ‘just the right amount’??? If I buy too much at once I’m panic buying, if I buy too little I’ve unnecessarily gone to the shop!! 🤷‍♀️

Scruffyoak · 25/03/2020 17:42

We cant buy chocolate with our shop?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 25/03/2020 17:42

Went out shopping today - no sign of police anywhere!

MrsSnitchnose · 25/03/2020 17:42

Police aren't currently checking reasons everywhere. I went to the supermarket this morning and was having a conversation with a group of officers on the way (DS wants to be a policeman when he grows up) and not one of them asked any questions

Vanhi · 25/03/2020 17:42

Ah...I need to go out everyday to look after the horses, I don’t think there’s a letter for that...

Take their passports with you, or a photograph or photocopy of them. Proves ownership and location.

Scruffyoak · 25/03/2020 17:43

I went out delivering some medications then I went to work. Didnt get stopped. Didnt even see anyone.

MiracletoCome · 25/03/2020 17:43

Well you could get to said supermarket for essentials and they might not be in stock if the past week is anything to go by, so you could end up with a shopping bag with what is deemed to be non essentials

lazyarse123 · 25/03/2020 17:44

Of course you can buy chocolate as long as you buy food as well.

adaline · 25/03/2020 17:46

Of course you can buy chocolate as long as you buy food as well.

What if the shop has run out of essentials so you end up just picking up some chocolate?

The whole thing feels like it's been chucked together really quickly and as a result it's not been thought through at all.
