The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

Just googled 1 feel free to find other numbers

didofido · 25/03/2020 17:33

Noodlenosefraggle - surely extended family spreads the load. "Royalty" has more clout as ambassadors, especially when they've been in place for years - and will be for years more.

And wouldn't there be a legal problem taking away their lands and houses? Unless you strip assets from everyone who owns land etc. I think that would need an all out revolution.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:34

Re that advert down below
Anyone else fed up with

‘Turbulent times
Unprecedented times
Challenging.,.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:35

A few will doggedly hang on though, desperate to be ruled and identify as a subject of sovereign power. God knows why.

It is odd.

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 17:36

Are you sure about that? I understood the Sovereign Grant came from the profits of the Crown Estates which are managed by the govt and the remaining profits go to the govt.
If the RF ceased tomorrow all profits from the crown estates would revert back to us. So we would be a hell of a lot better off without them.

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 17:38

If the RF ceased tomorrow all profits from the crown estates would revert back to us. So we would be a hell of a lot better off without them. If it belongs to them it is theirs and the money from it is quite reasonably theirs. What would happen if they all died isn't relevant.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:39

How much do they get from the public 1?

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 17:40

Nobody has answered the question of what they are all there for then, if not to boost morale in times of hardship?

Yep, their people are ill and dying. The RF are needed more than ever and need to step up.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 17:41

It is at times like this their job is important. If they can't do it, what is the point?

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 17:44

Marsha I have just googled, the Crown Estates aren't part of the Queens private property they are the property of the Crown, I assume that means she can leave her private estates to whoever she wants but the Crown Estates go to her heir. George III handed them over to the govt to manage and the Crown get 15% of the profits as the Sovereign grant, used to be the Civil List. Sounds like we are making a profit not a loss. She does pay tax but I don't think the Sovereign Grant is taxable, I can't be bothered to google that.

I'm not a royalist by the way, just think people shouldn't be blamed for things that aren't true or reasonable e.g. demanding a 90 something year old should be "doing" something when every other over 70 is told to self isolate.

UYScuti · 25/03/2020 17:47

imo them's keeping them heads down in fear of 'pitchforks'

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:47

Sounds a bit complicated 1
I didn’t think we should get the Estates but I do know we pay for them, that article think it was Forbes gave figure below.

The tourism angle is often mentioned but we can use the properties for that.

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 17:48

How much do they get from the public 1? As far as I know they get the Sovereign Grant from the treasury and that is funded by the profits of the Crown Estates no the public.

I imagine police security would be the thing that is paid by the public but I don't know. I suppose the other 85% of profits from the Crown Estates would cover it?

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 17:50

Marsha yes it does sound complicated but from what I read about the Crown Estates the money does come from that via the treasury.

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 17:51

But the properties aren't ours, they are the property of the monarch, or are you suggesting we go communist and seize all property. I don't want my house seized do you?

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 17:52

1forsorrow The crown estates aren’t theirs to keep. How outrageous if they were allowed to keep all those ill gotten lands if they ceased to be. It’s bad enough they get any profits from them now.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:53

Well true it’s hard to take their properties. Dammit ;

Maybe they can give them up.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 17:54

They cost each of us less than £1 a year. I’m not hard up enough to notice that.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 17:54

So we do pay. That figure below looks right.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 25/03/2020 17:57

Geez !
Im irish so no ardent royalist but the individual, the person Elizabeth, he is the current Queen, anybody can see she always does her duty.

You can be in favour of a republic without slagging off the queen!

The system exists and they were born in to it. Why hate them ?

If you want to dismantle the monarchy i think that hating the person who is the queen is not a necessity.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 25/03/2020 18:03

Seriously I think the time for them to speak was when Johnson announced the school closures and the request for socisl distancing and 'stay at home', because this was the point when the message needed to be made really strongly.

It doesn't need to be the Queen speaking.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 18:05

It does need the queen

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:06

@GenxfeellikeaBoomer sorry, where did I say I hated her? I said in a previous post, she has worked hard over the years.

But now is the time for them to get stuck in and they arent.

As for those '£1 a week' posters, yes it is a small amount per person, but huge collectively and could be put to much better use.

collectively and could be put to much better use

Like what?

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:11

@alsohuman anything. Schools, hospitals, mental health, charities, international aid, take your pick.

I know it's hard for you to justify them but surely you have one reasonable argument as to what they are actually there for, if not actually acting as a head of state?
