The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

Noodlenosefraggle - surely extended family spreads the load. "
Spread the load of what though? Their engagements consist of turning up to a few hundred events a year, most of which last a couple of hours and many of which are things that people do for leisure, like going to the theatre and sporting events. When Harry and Meghan left, there was a lit of talk about excessive burdens being put on Wills and Kate- 2 30 somethings who not only have 2 school aged children but 3 nannies and countless other staff, yet the burden of doing more than the tiny amount of engagements they do was a burden? In exchange for untold amounts of unearned privelege forvthem and their children and grandchildren forevermore? If they are to stick around, then they need a huge cull and the ones left to step up.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 18:12

Why do people want to keep them?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/03/2020 18:14

TBF I place no value at all on fluffy statements from the RF, but I'm not sure why folk imagine they'd dip into their private funds at such a time? Okay so the circumstances are exceptional, but I doubt they'd welcome the precedent; in any case they're not there to do things but to look as if they're doing them, in order to protect their own positions

It was the same with the royal yacht, widely touted as a potential hospital ship to justify the expense ... except that it "used the wrong fuel" during the Falklands and was "in use elsewhere" in the Gulf War

As ever, lots of self-interested PR and damn all actual use

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 18:18

I’d love Tom know that Marsha too. Just imagine if our prime ministers were also hereditary, that’d mean we’d get Boris’s sons or daughters waiting in line to take over. That’s how crazy it is.Theres no merit.

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 18:19

*to know that

BubblesBuddy · 25/03/2020 18:21

PC, for example, makes £20 million each year from the Duchy of Cornwall. He doesn’t need all of it. He could divert some of it to where it’s more useful. That’s being thoughtful. Harry - no use at all. Went awol. William - obviously no visits at the moment but surely Kate could produce a few recipes and cute pix to keep us going? Ha! They are just ornaments really. Certainly of little use in a crisis!

SarahInAccounts · 25/03/2020 18:21

This really is a deeply unpleasant thread.

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 18:22

Scotland Yard currently provide round the clock protection for 21 members of the RF. How bloody outrageous.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:22

@SarahInAccounts

Why?

OP posts:
BubblesBuddy · 25/03/2020 18:23

We don’t even really know how many DC Boris has! Why cannot W&K volunteer like other people? 250,000 have offered their services.

SarahInAccounts · 25/03/2020 18:26

Why?

It's deliberately goady. Pointless and snide.

Leave them be and do something positive with your day.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:26

@bubblesbuddy

I dont think Boris knows how many children Boris has lol

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 18:26

Debating the rights and wrongs of the monarchy isn’t unpleasant. It’s how it should be in a free democratic society.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 18:27

Why leave them be?

It may be the point too many realise they are redundant.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:29

@SarahInAccounts

I've baked a banana loaf and eaten it in the sun. It's been great 😊👌

What does goady even mean? It seems to be just a meaningless term on here for a thread that's got your back up because theres some truth in it

If only we could leave them be. Unfortunately we have to support them. Wish they’d leave us be.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 18:30

@SarahInAccounts They have a job to do, and they are not doing it.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 18:32

If the PM disappeared we would all be asking what he is doing as well.

If we are being lied to and the queen has died and charles is very ill, then they can't do much. But william could.

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 18:35

It was reported that the Queen was going to talk to the nation last weekend. She didn't.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 18:36

I know it's hard for you to justify them but surely you have one reasonable argument as to what they are actually there for, if not actually acting as a head of state?

I just like them. They cost me bugger all and do me no harm. I’m clearly less bothered about them than you are.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:38

@Alsohuman

Finally Grin there is no reason!

Btw they cost you a quid a year Wink

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 18:39

Grow up.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 18:41

@alsohuman

I just wish they liked you back. It's all quite sad really.

OP posts:
Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 18:41

I just like them.

Do you know them?

managedmis · 25/03/2020 18:56

I just like them. They cost me bugger all

^^

Even thought it's a quid per year I struggle to have any empathy/respect for them when I'm struggling to find a hospital bed, subsidised childcare, or an employment contract that is not zero hours.

You know, whilst they're being Royals and all that their entitlement brings.
