The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

So France is on a slippery slope?

Are you confused by the link between Reductio ad absurdum and slippery slope?

France has over 12,000 rough sleepers on its streets - how has abolishing the French monarchy helped with that?

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 11:55

I think you've cracked it, Clavinova!

Indeed - quite jealous of the wealth those footballers' wives have - best take it away to make me feel better. Grin

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 12:11

@clavinova

I didnt say a republic would solve homelessness. You're doing it again, not answering the actual question and instead throwing your toys out of the pram at everything else, or making unrelated false comparisons.

OP posts:
TheSandman · 27/03/2020 12:42

Yes @Clavinova those footballers wives (and husbands - not all female footy players are gay) wealth is annoying but they earned it. They rose to the top of their fields whether it's kicking a ball around or shagging those who do.

How do any of us rise through the ranks to become over paid figureheads? Where's the infrastructure to enable low income kids to become chief 'standing-about-faking-looking-interested' bods. I'm sure there are lots of people out here who would be much better at the job than the current holders but they're never going to get the chance.

Maybe we should take it in turns. Or the Lottery! Enter the Lottery get to be symbolic head of state for the year.

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 12:50

If footballers stopped playing they wouldn’t get paid. The royals get paid come what may. The little they do do is exaggerated to make them look busy. All the ground work of their engagements is done for them. We must be mad to tolerate them.

MarshaBradyo · 27/03/2020 12:54

Footballers and everyone else are subject to supply and demand, profit brought in, fine.

The royals are a monopoly. And we don’t have a choice. If we could vote yearly on whether they stay or go that’d be good. Worse one out maybe.

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 13:01

OP - So you want one of the royal stately homes to be turned in to a hospital - Don't be daft. Just think about it.

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 13:15

why don't you donate some money to your Republic cause - they are still stuck on 384.

So what, that means nothing. If you had a poll tomorrow in North Korea on whether they wanted to continue with Kim Jung Un, or replace it with democracy I should imagine (regardless of the fear factor) theyd stick with what they’ve got. It’s brainwashing, they think it’s the right way, it’s what they’ve always had.....Same here in a way....we’ve been brainwashed into thinking the country needs a monachy and we couldn’t possibly live without them, without actually stopping to think how deeply wrong and abhorrent it is.

Noodlenosefraggle · 27/03/2020 13:27

Well one thing they could do is forfeit the Sovereign Grant entirely for the year. They will hardly starve to death, or open up Buck House for longer and give the money to the State to rescue the economy. If we want a Monarchy, why do they have to be so bloody bloated? 500 staff to look after one old lady? Plus now she lives apart from Phil, another shedload of staff at Sandringham, and at Kensington Palace, and at Clarence House and all their other country homes. If these were opened up even in part to the public, they could either raise their own money or give it back to us or pay for the upkeep of their various houses so we dont have to.

Noodlenosefraggle · 27/03/2020 13:30

Agree about footballers etc. They get paid obscene amounts of money but they have a talent that they are paid handsomely for. Even the likes of Gemma Collins has a 'talent for making money out of very little'. And they are paid privately for their services. If people dont want to pay for them they wont get paid and they will have to find something else to do.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 13:37

@Clavinova

I actually agree about footballers, grotesquely overpaid and just as bad in their private lives.

However this thread isn't about footballers as they are not head of state. The only people that line their pockets are people that actually choose to therefore it's none of my business really.

OP posts:
TheNavigator · 27/03/2020 14:13

I don't have to pay a penny to footballers as I have no interest in football. I also have no interest in the monarchy but guess what, I'm still paying for them. Totally false analogy.

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 14:24

If we have to have a “queen”, the job should come up for election every four years. The one we have now (that’s never put a foot wrong 😂] should have been pensioned off years ago. Give someone else a chance to cut a few ribbons and read papers. As long as they can include their huge extended family in with it, palaces included. Hmm

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 14:31

@yesterdayhasgone

Or could get rid altogether

OP posts:
Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 14:46

On the footballers' theme....at least a few have donated their resources (hotels) in support of the NHS.

Boxer Khan has just donated his 60,000sqft building to the NHS.

Just highlights how little the Royals are doing.

#thanksforthefoodparcelsandwaves

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 14:49

So even footballers have actually helped at their own personal expense. And the royals do a clapping video. Its beyond embarrassing now

You answered your own question - you marry one of them (or sleep with one). Grin

I also have no interest in the monarchy but guess what, I'm still paying for them.

£1.24 last year according to Sky News - a bargain!

news.sky.com/story/the-royal-accounts-this-is-why-the-monarchy-cost-41-more-last-year-11748503

Can we get a tax refund/council tax refund for all the services we don't use? I've got a long list.

Or the Lottery

We would have to ban lotteries - some people can't afford to buy a ticket which is unfair (premium bonds as well) and a few lucky people win millions - sheer luck of course - nothing to do with merit.

500 staff to look after one old lady?

Do they get a good salary and pension? Jobs might be difficult to find in the current climate.

Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 14:52

So even footballers have actually helped at their own personal expense

It’s not costing them anything. Their hotels would be standing empty.

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 14:55

That's very generous of Amir Khan but there is a faint whiff of publicity there;

"I am prepared to give my 60,000 square foot 4 story building which is due to be a wedding hall and retail outlet."

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 14:55

It’s not costing them anything. Their hotels would be standing empty.

Beside the point, it's some substantial help.

And not saying we should use these for the NHS purposes but I highly doubt all the properties of the RF are filled with people.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 14:56

That's very generous of Amir Khan but there is a faint whiff of publicity there.

So what?! People will still benefit if the NHS take him up on his offer.

Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 14:59

People will still benefit if the NHS take him up on his offer

And he’ll benefit from the great PR without it costing him a penny. It’s exploitation of the situation under the guise of generosity.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 14:59

@Alsohuman just like buck palace, however only one of them has been offered...

Anyone care to comment why Wills cant reprise his role as an air ambulance pilate for the duration of the pandemic?

And he’ll benefit from the great PR without it costing him a penny. It’s exploitation of the situation under the guise of generosity.

Again, so what?! Better to do something substantial and real even if the motive was less than altruistic.

What are the RF doing again????

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 15:06

@Alsohuman
I stated upthread about Elon Musk donating 1200 ventilators to US hospitals....massive PR stunt but 1200 people get a fighting chance of survival.
If the NHS can put that 60,000 sqft space to good use, who cares why Khan did it?!
